March 22, 20214 yr The border has been a catastrophe for 20+ years now, and seemingly no one in Washington is willing to actually address the problems. Republicans talk tough and use 7th century solutions (and still somehow build only 5 miles of wall) while Democrats invite more and more people in by rewarding lawlessness. Here's some actual things we should be doing to try and address the problem. 1. End the war on drugs -- seriously, this would solve a massive part of the problem. These people are fleeing failed narco-states run by cartels. Let's accept that (i) Americans want drugs, (ii) in a free society, people should be able to ingest whatever they want as long as they don't endanger others (e.g., driving) and (iii) drugs come from these countries. Start with at least legalizing weed, but I'd go further and legalize/de-criminalize drugs and remove the power of the cartels. Let the cartels start competing...with Phillip Morris. 2. Crackdown on Employers -- make the penalties for hiring illegal immigrants VERY high, so there is no cost advantage in hiring them. Remove one of the reasons they are coming here -- to find work. 3. No benefits for illegals -- I don't want entitlement programs for anyone, but giving them to people here illegally is genuinely insane. No welfare, no Obamacare, no driver's licenses, etc. Make living here illegally HARDER, not easier. Incentives matter. 4. Invest in border security from this millenium -- drones, more agents, etc. The wall is an idiotic idea. More border security is not. 5. Build more detention centers to house people and hire more immigration judges -- stop just releasing people and hoping they show up to a court date. I actually think using hotels at the border that have no business right now due to the pandemic is smart. Hear the amnesty cases and comply with international agreements. 6. Stop talking about a path to citizenship -- stop it. Just stop it. No one who comes here illegally should be allowed to become a citizen. Finding a path to legal status for the millions here? OK, we can discuss that and it makes sense. But letting them become citizens is a slap in the face to legal immigrants who played by the rules. Of course, none of this will happen. It's too logical.

If you don't do this one, the rest are meaningless, because they're going to keep coming. Anyone who's against legalization is pro illegal immigration.

Ding ding ding, Fing winner, winner, illegal dinner. Excellent points I believe #2 is the ONLY way to really address the issue. They come and get jobs BECAUSE THEY CAN. Because the punishment meted out to employers of illegals is still cheaper than hiring real employees and having to pay taxes, etc.

For the most part the companies follow the required procedures to check into the employees and everything checks out. Based on that understanding, my belief has been that the penalties don't need to be harsher, rather the vetting processes and procedures need to be more thorough and exhaustive.

The Social Security Administration estimates that 1.8 million immigrants were working in the United States with fake or stolen Social Security cards in 2010. It also estimates that 3.9 million foreigners worked "under the table" in 2010. So, twice as many work under the table than have fake documents. There are systems in place to verify I-9s, but there is no requirement companies use them in most states.

Yeah, Biden creating a disaster at the border because he ended successful Trump-era policies and later being forced to re-implement those policies because of the disaster he created is a huge sign of an improvement lmfao. so much winning.

Good luck getting away from leftist insanity after that, because a US government under total leftist control will follow you to the ends of the earth to take "your fair share” from you. The numbers you posted do not align with the programs I referenced, but it is possible (likely?) that those programs were focused on industries that get checked enough to require papers. Either way, my point remains... I think a big first step to curb illegal employment is to enhance requirements for employers to verify legal status. The problem becomes doing this is a way that does not disenfranchise immigrants that are here legally.
