Fair enough, but for the current labor force to sustain itself, especially with the overall aging population, we need to at least have working age population be level.

Of course if you believe AI is going to replace humans then a declining population is okay.

People living longer while maintaining the same retirement age is a definite problem. Young people with no ability or desire to work is another.

Robot slaves becoming our overlords? Yet another.

Finally a judge who has an ounce of common sense! Thank you Judge Breyer.

#Breaking -US District Judge Charles R. Breyer has DENIED CA Gov Gavin Newsom’s request for an immediate restraining order prohibiting the Trump administration from using the Marines and the National Guard to restore order to California

My issue was more with the idea that a higher population is assumed to be a desirable outcome. Maybe it is, maybe it isn't (I'm in the latter camp), but I don't like seeing it posed as an axiom.

I believe the Earth, flat or spheroid, has approximately 7 to 7.5 billion more human beings than it should comfortably contain. Every day that passes makes me more confident in that. I may be right or wrong but this is my true view and not one of my antics.

As I type this, I see a plot popping up from @mattwill showing the US population trajectory lol. Thanks, friend, but that wasn't my beef. It's no news to me that industrial nations have reached a comparative inflection point in population growth. But developing countries have greatly reduced infant mortality over the past century without a corresponding reduction in birth rate. It will take them longer, culturally to level out.

What I'm trying to say is I'm overly sensitive to "we need more people" - anywhere, US, UK, UPS, UFC, KFC. Anywhere.

I'm not a malthusian. There is a limit to be sure but we're ok.

I do however believe that we should be planning government social/safety net programs around a more conservative (in the real definition of the word not the modern US "conservative") projection of the population.

Boomers assumed every generation was going to have 2.5-3 kids. They used this false (lying) assumption to steal from future generations. All the while ****ing about high tax rates. They foisted this problem on us and ... Well, f*** them.

We have problems everywhere

I think this is both an overstatement and an abdication of responsibility for older generations.

Boomers are complaining because the youth of today is pissed off about the bills left to them. Rightly so.

Agreed.

My ideal population is not based on Malthus. It's 100% Arthur.

This year, California Governor Gavin Newsom will spend $9.5 BILLION taxpayer dollars on healthcare for illegal aliens. But Gavin is BIG MAD that it’ll cost a few bucks for our military to protect the citizens of his state — because he refuses to do so.
