This time we have testing, we have vaccinations, we know treatments that can work. It's not the same dire scenario as it was in 2020. Even when we had "lockdowns", grocery stores and gas stations stayed open, restaurants were open for takeout, and bars sold drinks to go. Only non-essential services closed. I can manage for a few weeks. I really don't think we're going back to 2020.

Not a chance. It's fox news nonsense.

I'm not seeing that, most projections I've seen to date for hospitalizations seem to be roughly on par with original strain but far less than Delta. Still enough to prolong the pandemic, and hardly a mild cold like the trumpbots keep touting, but they were never good at math so not really surprising in that regard.

Dr. Ouchie himself is saying it just yesterday.

It's doesn't say on the tube anywhere, but how many tablespoons of horse paste am I supposed to give a 110lb 14 year old?

i haven't heard any talk of new lockdowns in the us. sounds like faux outrage to be honest.

You're probably right, and I hope so too.

We never saw lockdowns with Delta despite the fear mongering on Fox News for months on end, but sure, this time they're really coming! Run for the hills, the evil Democrats are coming to lock you in your house and take your guns too!

Dude, all news channels are fear mongering. It's what sells. I'm simply looking at places like Germany, UK, Denmark, Thailand, etc. as to where they're heading.

He said record hospitalizations, as in more than we saw with delta?

You watch some goofy news channels bro. I feel like we've been over this with you, find better sources.

I'm good, little Peter D00shlage. Continue to fret about a >99% survival rate virus.

So me saying we're not gonna have lockdowns somehow enters your severely damaged brain and gets interpreted as me fretting about covid.

No, more your entire posting history for the past two years.

Peter ****lage - I like it

Says the guy whose posting history includes cheerleading for Trump for 4 years, claiming that vaccine mandates were gonna cut our workforce by 25%, predicting annually mandated boosters that will never end, and framing omicron as a mild cold.

yeah....the big lockdowns were early on in the pandemic...before the vaccines & more effective treatments were a thing. it would have to get really, really bad before we see something like that in the us again.

Yeah, you're right...neverending boosters and not being considered "fully vaccinated" without them is just SO farfetched. And yeah, Omicron is a mild variant...show me data that says otherwise, Yoda. Face it, you're a typical chicken little **** who is scared of a milder virus variant that already has a kill rate of less than 1%.

Again, I hope you're right on lockdowns. Maybe it's just vaccine passports, restaurants closing at 8 and restrictions on large gatherings again...guess all eyes will be on NYC.

Yeah just a mild cold that will land hundreds of thousands in the hospital every month and kill tens of thousands as it tears through the country. All the mild colds I know have the ability to bring our healthcare systems to the verge of collapse.

Lots of fear mongering in Euro news (note: most definitely not Fox). Some places are starting with lock down crap again over here. Not where I am of course though the media has been pumping the alarm headlines.

It'll be less than the already sub-1% mortality rate for the original strain. Those at risk, do what you need to do to mitigate. For the rest of us, move on.

In the upset of the century, DeBlasio is making sense and saying no to lockdowns. Hochul may come in over the top -- that's the worry. But so far, seems like they are resisting going beyond masks and requiring proof of vaccination. Some places are shutting down, like restaurants, because their staff is all testing positive.

I'm very curious to see if NYE in TS happens this year. So far, signs point to yes but I agree...Hochul may come in late stage and nix it.

Btw - The seasonal flu is the major contributor to hospital overrun over here now but of course COVID adds to the normal load and in a significant manner.

Yes, I remember seeing a report on it years ago. It was popular in poor parts of Ukraine/Russia because heroin was expensive and hard to come by. I think the process of making it somehow involved diesel fuel? The word krokodil is Russian for "crocodile," and the name comes from the drug turning people's skin black and scaly and peeling off.

oh man, get me some of that!

my youngest son's after-school had one teacher test positive for Covid - this after a recital the kids did saturday where everybody was on stage maskless (the school is pretty committed to mask wearing during school and I believe they wore masks back-stage, only taking them off when the kids went on stage).

my wife is now freaking out about what Christmas will look like if he tests positive. trying to talk her down off the ledge sharing how Omicron looks pretty mild compared to earlier cases, but she doesn't understand why I'm not freaking out about something we don't even know is a problem.

we're keeping him home today as his after-school program was canceled anyway while the rest of the staff is tested, and the wife is trying to find a way for him to get tested today as well.

she's more worried about how this impacts holiday plans than catching the virus itself. I'm not particularly worried either way.

so the wife is convinced she has it. she was tested by her work yesterday so she's awaiting results. she has a bad headache and muscle aches, but no fever or respiratory issues.

I feel fine.

my five year old is also feeling fine, but we are trying to get him tested since he was the most likely to be exposed. I've been on hold for over 5 hours and I've gone from #72 to #10. So less than an hour now I guess until they till me they can't test him for 2 weeks

Why not just get an at-home test?

they're sold out everywhere.

The sad thing is I've heard people say they have been in lines of 3 hours to get free tests.  Well you know what's gonna happen in a 3 hour line right?  It's like f, don't these people watch any zombie movies?

This is what people need to remember looking at raw numbers. ICUs typically operate on average at about 60+% capacity. It's significantly higher in the winter and in major metropolitan areas though. You don't need a huge influx to overwhelm capacity. Thankfully we're not quite there yet but it's a lot more tenuous than people think.

EDs are absolute nightmares right now though. Lots of patients being boarded in makeshift rooms.
