my five year old is also feeling fine, but we are trying to get him tested since he was the most likely to be exposed. I've been on hold for over 5 hours and I've gone from #72 to #10. So less than an hour now I guess until they till me they can't test him for 2 weeks

This is what people need to remember looking at raw numbers. ICUs typically operate on average at about 60+% capacity. It's significantly higher in the winter and in major metropolitan areas though. You don't need a huge influx to overwhelm capacity. Thankfully we're not quite there yet but it's a lot more tenuous than people think.

EDs are absolute nightmares right now though. Lots of patients being boarded in makeshift rooms.

Yep, I get it.  The normal planning has the capacity to handle the normal flu levels though to be fair we have a super bad year this year over here since last year was so mild.  COVID adds on top of that and it is getting pretty tricky again.  Here in Sweden we are still ok but with the seasonal flu being so bad we can't handle much COVID pressure and so we are taking some actions to try to flatten the curve a bit even though our numbers are still really low.

my kids have their shots.  My ex has hers she works at a big sf hospital in the respiratory  dept so she has seen how bad COVID can be time and time again.  Said it’s a terrible way to go out.
