So, right at the beginning of everything, we all found ourselves in the white tents set up outside of the hospital emergency department. We were the absolute front line. Patients no matter what they were coming in for had to see us before getting in to the emergency department and we would triage, and get a temp to determine if they were going in the covid entrance, or non-covid entrance. One of us was also stationed inside the ambulance bay so that even all patients coming via ambulance had to stop at us before proceeding- no matter what. Didn't matter if it was a stroke, heart attack whatever. One of my colleagues saw two young kids, drowning victims that were already dead.From there, as things changed and needs shifted some of us became screeners when clinics began to re-open. Stationed at each entrance of every building to ask screening questions and get temperatures and determine if we had to turn people away, or let them in- whatever the ever changing rules were at the time. No gloves were allowed. Supply shortages. We were getting breathed on by everyone, or worse coughed and sneezed on. I was of course on the side of the building where family medicine, and pediatrics was so we had sick people constantly. Still no one knew much about this virus, but we had to be exposed numerous times every single day. Some of us became "sitters" in ICU in the hospital where you literally just sat with a patient for your 8 hour shift. Others of us were in the ICU stationed as "runners" for when the nurses or doctors needed something. Many times, they died there next to you. Maybe you were talking to them just a little bit ago, but by the end of your shift they were no longer with us. Some of us then became testers as surgeries began to re-open. Using the temporary order by the governor to expand athletic trainers' scope of practice allowing for invasive procedures we were administering the covid tests to tons of people, daily and sending their results to the lab for pre-surgical screening to make sure they weren't positive before going to the operating room.Doctors choose their specialty. Some choose to see kids with cancer. Doing gods work. Some choose to see gruesome trauma. We as athletic trainers occasionally have the opportunity to save a live but not usually. We may see a deformed limb. We never knowingly signed up to work 3rd shifts and to see dead young kids and people dying daily. But that was our new reality.Me and my friends saw the worst of it. It wasnt made up by the media, or Joe Biden. It did not discriminate by political party. Everyone was susceptible. Those early stages were still in Trump's term. And Trump was the one who got the vaccine pushed through exceedingly fast. And yeah our hospital made it mandatory or else you got fired, but I had so many possible exposures, and saw enough death that I was very willing to take the risks of some side effects rather than catch the illness itself. Anyone who wouldnt want to, I saw as selfish, and wrong because they hadnt seen the reality of what was going on. They heard right wingers saying this is no big deal, and its a big government hoax, and a hospital money maker (which was also very misguided and untruthful information).Personally, I saved my mom's life. My mom, dad, and sister (who got stuck in the country while visiting from abroad) all caught covid at the same time. My sister had minor, weird symptoms more neurological in nature. My dad had cold/flu symptoms. My mom was the worst and she sounded terrible. I went to their house one day to drop things off outside their door and in talking with them I said, she sounds horrible...she needs to put this on- Luckily in my car I had my pulse oximeter from work. She put it on. Of course, she was one of those "happy" hypoxics who thought she just had a bad cough and would be fine. Being able to actually see her reading, they finally decided she needed to go to the hospital. I remember that feeling knowing how many people walked in and their families never got to see them walk out. Wondering if that was the last time we got to see her too. She spent 5 days in the hospital and it was not good. Doctors did not provide positive updates in her case. Often choosing very cautious words and warnings that it was pretty bad. Her labs were at levels of patients that typically died. I remember getting calls from her when she had the littlest bit of energy to speak. One time she called and said, I cant talk, Im too tired. But stay on the phone I just want to hear your voice. At the time, I thought that might be her saying goodbye. After a little bit, she said I can go and she was going to rest. I didnt know if there would ever be another call. Luckily, she pulled through.Had she not used my pulse oximeter that day, who knows how much longer she would have delayed treatment and how that would have turned out. She and my dad battled long covid for months after. Irregular heart rates, random blood pressure spikes. My mom would get easily out of breath just from getting dressed and her heart would race. My dad has increased eye pressures that he has to take drops for, for the rest of his life.For the people that never experienced the true evil of this disease, theyll complain about really minor inconveniences- Im hot with a mask on. I had to get poked with a needle. Stores were short on toilet paper. I had to social distance. Cry me a river. Thats the worst you had to deal with and youre ready to crucify Fauci over that. Please....Pathetic. Should be so embarrassed to sound like that in front of people who saw or experienced true hardships rather than temporary inconveniences.How would you have any idea what created my stance on things and how would you have any idea what my stance even is? I am not reading this novel. Stick to your short one word responses. Fauci should be in prison. Also, people should be able to make a decision for themselves whether to take a vaccine that wasn't properly vetted, yet people like POS tony fauci lied to get people to take it, force people to take it so they can become wealthy. Fever, aches, chills those are largely cytokine reactions.There is exactly one safe medication for the treatment of fever/aches/chills (and their risk to the fetus) in pregnancy: Tylenol. Everyone remember when the Kennedy and Trump made a completely made up claim that Tylenol in pregnancy causes autism? I don't seem to remember the same interest in cytokine reactions then by Bojack and Slingblade. Weird...
