It  initially demonstrated a decrease in replication of COVID in vitro that they theorized could be related to protease inhibition. It is not a protease inhibitor specially and that decrease in replication has not been demonstrated on larger scale studies and has not translated to any clear benefit in in vivo studies. 

So basically it had some weak data to suggest it's maybe worth investigating, but pretty rapidly became obvious it wasn't going to amount to anything once we got more data. Why people are still digging in their heels on it? Who the hell knows. I blame the school system.
