January 28, 20224 yr Lots of good stuff coming out on BA.2 today. Continues to outcompete BA.1 in more countries, but while it appears more transmissible, no evidence that it's any better at escaping immunity (in fact it might even be worse at it than BA.1) Most of it is aggregated in the thread below. Haven't had a chance to go through all of it yet, but passing it along in case anyone has a bout of insomnia tonight and needs something to put them to sleep.
January 28, 20224 yr Remember when people argued at the beginning of the pandemic that hospital data on Covid was including people who were hospitalized for other reasons who just happened to test positive and those people got called conspiracy theorists and some were banned from social media and then Fauci came on TV a month or so ago and said literally the exact same thing in response to the omicron wave and everyone just accepted it without batting an eye?

Don't have good numbers, but I'd say if you take rapid tests on days 4, 5, and 6, and all are negative (while also being asymptomatic the whole time) then I doubt you're contagious. But it's also not exactly a step function, there are gradients and whether you're contagious or not can depend on other factors like your viral load at a given time, how long someone else is exposed to you, whether they're vaccinated, etc. Probably best to assume you're infected though and mask up until at least the 6th day from when you were last exposed to her if you're not gonna do a PCR.
January 28, 20224 yr If i were in your shoes, I'd probably get a pcr, but it also depends on how convenient it is. If you can't book one for 2 more days, and then the results won't come back until 3 days after that, it kinda defeats the purpose. But when i took one in the fall, it was a same-day type deal, and i got the result the next morning. In that case, yeah I'd probably get one done.

Her PCR just came back, actually, and it's obviously positive. That was a pretty quick turnaround.

Most likely the same but I haven't seen what they use at a doctors office, my kids had them done there once but my wife wasn't sure what type it was. But the at home tests are called lateral flow tests where you swab your nose, wring the swab out in a buffer solution, and then squeeze a few drops onto a test strip. I've heard there's also some saliva based ones when you spit into a tube but never seen one personally.
