Here we actually did our best to follow the credible science. One example is that we never ever forced the really young kids to mask in any country. Just one example.

Bedtime prayers with my 9 year old son last night, he was saying what he's thankful for. He mentioned that corona is getting better, they only have to wear masks in school in certain situations. He was excited about reducing mask restrictions. They don't have to wear masks when sitting at their desk because the seats are far enough apart, when eating in the cafeteria, and when playing recess even indoors. But they wear them on the bus and walking in halls or standing up. Meanwhile, teachers and administrators across the country are seen posing in photos maskless with kids in masks, politicians don't follow their own rules. I'm all for "the science" if we're consistent. In 2020 we stayed home, reduced going out, wore masks, used hand sanitizer like crazy, washed hands, didn't attend funerals, managed work at home and virtual school. Got vaccinated. Followed the rules. At this point adults are going around maskless everywhere but we still have kids wearing masks in school. NBA players can sweat and breathe and spit all over each other on the court but then sit down and wear a mask on the sidelines. Following "the science" is fine but some of this stuff is just for show and a lot of it very hypocritical.

I made completely different observations about the local mask mandate than the writer and the Johns Hopkins expert -- and I live in the same city as them, Baltimore. Here is why the mask mandate worked: Before it went into effect, the virus wreaking havoc, filling up ERs and hospitals, transmission was out of control. But I could walk into any store and maybe 1/3 of the people in there wore a mask. Why not? They didn't have to, I suppose. The day it went into effect? Everybody but 1 or 2 people got the message. I feel like half of the people would prefer not to wear facemasks, but they will during a health emergency. There's always a few people that refuse, they don't care no matter what. Did it change any behavior? I haven't eaten inside any local restaurant since the latest mandate went into effect. Most of my local friends have not either. Was it foolproof? No. People are still eating out at restaurants/bars. The mandate is rarely enforced. But it got most people to mask up, and I've seen some change in behavior. BTW, Kids over 2 are encouraged to wear a mask, but it is not mandated for kids under 5.

My daughters have a dance workshop this weekend in a state that doesn’t require masks so the event is not requiring them either. And a large percentage of the girls from dance school have said they will wear masks anyway. When I heard that my heart broke. What the F have we done?!?!?

I wore them on plenty of occasions throughout the pandemic. For example, they were quite useful in semi-crowded indoor situations during the big waves early on and including Delta and in particular in any situation indoors where distancing wasn't easy and where ventilation wasn't great. On the other hand, kids under 7 or 8 should not be wearing them at all and never should have. Also, they are certainly nothing to consider when one is outside unless in a packed concert crowd or something. Further, cloth masks are completely useless with Omicron. If you're going to mask during Omicron then you need an N95.

My family has upgraded. We wear N95s in public. But it's hard enough to get people to wear a cloth mask.... It takes a local ordinance to get half the people to listen!

People in Asia have been wearing masks for decades due to smog, allergies and to prevent getting sick. It's understandable that in 2020 people panicked and took more extreme precautions. In 2022 with Omicron basically a common cold it's time to end mask mandates, even health experts agree on that. Why do we have our kids still wearing masks while politicians school administrators and even teachers aren't. The mask became the ultimate virtue signal and some aren't ready to stop.

However, if you are going to mask now in the Omicron phase then it makes 100% sense to go with the N95 as you and your family have chosen to do.

Omicron symptoms are basically cold symptoms. Hospitalizations and deaths are lower than previous variants. Even Lord Fauci and other experts are saying we don't need lockdowns anymore, we need herd immunity and it's moving in the direction of the common cold and flu. Now they say cloth masks don't really work. It's been 2 years since "14 days to flatten the curve." Time to stop making our kids wear masks when politicians and adults don't. These hypocrites literally post for photo ops maskless standing above kids forced to wear masks. We're not in spring 2020 anymore when people were shopping for groceries in hazmat suits and wiping takeout containers with lysol wipes.

That rate is very hard to quantify at this stage and best left alone to be honest. The numbers are all based on reported cases and we all know for sure that the actual number of people that got sick with Omicron is far far more than the number of reported cases. Many (maybe even most) were probably asymptomatic.

Yep just your typical common cold that commonly kills 70k Americans in a month.

Right because if something is milder than the delta variant, then it must be a mild cold. Clearly no room for any shades of gray between the deadliest virus in over a century and a common cold. Good call.

I can't follow you to your conclusion when the basis of your argument is off. I agree there is time to end the mandates. When people develop immunity and the virus wanes. We are much closer now than 2020, but I feel it's still premature. IMO we're setting up the next wave.
