July 13, 20205 yr Automation is inevitable. It's well past time to modernize our economy. Quote Four MIT graduates created a restaurant with a robotic kitchen that cooks your food in three minutes or less Irene Anna Kim and Exa Zim May 28, 2018, 9:00 AM Spyce is a new restaurant in Boston powered by a robotic kitchen that cooks your food in three minutes or less. MIT graduates Michael Farid, Brady Knight, Luke Schlueter, and Kale Rogers created the robotic technology and restaurant concept while in college. Known as the "Spyce Boys", the founders were inspired by their experiences as hungry student-athletes on tight budgets. The robotic kitchen is actually designed to prepare the food, cook it, and even clean up. Following is a transcript of the video. Spyce is located in Boston. Their robotic kitchen cooks your food in three minutes or less. The fast casual restaurant was created by four MIT graduates. Michael Farid: As robotics-obsessed engineers, we set out to create a new and efficient way of cooking food. The robotic kitchen serves salad and grain bowls. Here's how it works. You order from an electronic kiosk. Spyce offers vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free bowls. There are 7 customizable options. A screen displays your order while the robotic kitchen gets to work. Luke Schlueter: Our woks cook by constantly tumbling your food, which provides a really nice and even sear. They're heated with induction and we have temperature control to perfectly cook your meal every time. The only human in the kitchen is the "garde manger" or "garnish employee". They add your toppings. The bowls are $7.50 each. The founders were inspired by their experiences as hungry college students. Brady Knight: From our humble starts in our fraternity basement, we developed a prototype that really sort of proved we could build something that can create delicious, high-quality meals. Spyce 's robotic kitchen is designed to cook, serve, and clean up. After creating the robotic kitchen, the founders focused on food quality. Kale Rogers: We knew we needed some culinary excellence, to really bring this restaurant concept to life. The founders recruited Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud to be Spyce's culinary director. Chef Daniel Boulud: I needed to come to Boston. I discovered that the robotic kitchen brings precision, consistency, taste, and also freshness to the preparation. Currently, Spyce only has one location. So you'll have to visit Boston to try food from a robotic kitchen. Are robots the future of the food industry?
July 13, 20205 yr Update from the Doc for this past week THERE IS NO IMMACULATE INFECTION. THE COVID INFECTION IS TRANSMITTED BY MISCREANTS WHO REFUSE TO DISTANCE OR WEAR MASKS. THE CURRENT DEBACLE HAS RESULTED FROM THE INCOMPETENCE OF THE ANTI SCIENCE GOVERNORS WHO COLLECTIVELY, COULDN'T GOVERN AN ANT COLONY. ALTHOUGH THERE HAS BEEN A COME TO JESUS MOMENT FOR SOME, WHO ARE NOW MANDATING MASKS , ENFORCEMENT IS ABSENT AND THE DEATHS AND SICKNESS CONTINUE TO RISE. HOSPITALS IN SOME AREAS ARE OVERFLOWING. On the front line I returned to Staten Island this week because of continued shortages. In the trips back and forth to work, if I saw a dozen people outside without masks that would be a lot. The Governor has done a tremendous job, the people have embraced his message and infections are going down. Our hospital has not had a SINGLE covid patient in four days. Wearing masks for all has become the norm!! THE END GAME Currently the world is ensnared in a deadly war with the Covid virus. In this country, despite the mounting crisis, we are distracted with superfluous issues such as the opening of amusement parks, bars, restaurants and playing sports (which pose significant risks without very contrived circumstances, that have yet to prove successful) Attempting to revert to such activities gives people the impression of returning normality. In fact, reality is becoming increasingly tragic. All of these activities will increase the spreading transmission of the virus. The nation's total focus should be on defeating the virus that is wrecking the country and killings its people. (135,000 dead and climbing) There is concern about the length of possible immunity from a vaccine that we do not have yet. The immunity need only last long enough to get about 70% of the population immunized, or some combination of compliance with masks and vaccinations that exceeds 70% so that we can eradicate the virus. This was done with SARS and was recently accomplished in New Zealand, before outsiders were exempted from 14 day quarantine and introduced new infections into the country. This brings up the critical question of world wide cooperation to immunize populations rapidly and possibly the need to seriously enforce travel restrictions as New Zealand and some other countries have done until the vaccination process is completed. Absent an effective vaccine, strict enforcement of distancing and wearing masks, NOT shutting down (a proxy for safe living practices) is absolutely essential. JAMA LEARNING NETWORK Conversations with Dr. Bauchner, Editor Dr. Fauci July 2, 2020 As Dr. Fauci sees it, the interconnectedness of hot spots in the country may influence increased transmission in other areas and is what is so dangerous about these focal areas. If the citizens do not adhere to safe living guidelines he foresees greater difficulties. I have seen outdoor bars in Sea Isle City, New Jersey jammed with people standing shoulder to shoulder with no distancing or masks. Just this week Governor Murphy Mandated masks when distancing was not not possible but the effectiveness of this mandate will depend on enforcement. He stressed the importance of wearing masks and noted that some of the Governors that I refer to as the "anti science governors" are now recognizing the importance of masks and are speaking up. He did not mention that they were a day late and a dollar short. He feels that opening the country prudently, complying with safe living practices is where we should be, and that opening the country and safe living practices should not be opposing forces. He commented on the declining death rate despite the increasing number of cases and attributed it to three factors: 1. The average age of of those infected has dropped by 15 years in the last month or so 2. We are protecting vulnerable patients better 3. He is concerned that the uptick in deaths is only delayed but that it is coming Vaccines - He does not feel that there will be just a single effective vaccine but that there will be several and is hoping to have several 100 million doses of these vaccines by early 2021 and a billion doses by the end of 2021. He is worried about the lack of long lasting immunity - personally, if we plan appropriately, immunity will only need to last long enough to vaccinate over 70% of the population. Schools - Dr. Fauci believes that it is important to get the children back in school and the risks are obviously different in different parts of the country, related, to the prevalence of the disease. So if you live in the anti science Governor's states good luck. There can be no national template, plans will need to be developed based on local prevalence rates. He mentioned that some states will really not need to do anything special to get their children back to school. Developing a SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine at Warp Speed JAMA Network Kevin P. O Callaghan July 6, 2020 Warp Speed - a partnership between the government and industry to deliver 300 million doses of SAFE AND EFFECTIVE vaccine by 2021. From an original list of 125 vaccine candidates there are now five vaccines in clinical trials. All five are aimed at inducing antibodies directed against the receptor binding domain (RBD, see previous email) of the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 which attaches to the host cell. The Candidates 1. Moderna 2. BioNTECH, Fosum, Pfizer 3. Merck, Sharpe, Dome, International Aids Vaccine Institute 4. Johnson and Johnson, Jansen Pharmaceuticals 5. Astrazeneca and the University of Oxford (rumored to the most advanced) mRNA are novel vaccines (1,2) and have never been used commercially to prevent infection. They function on the premise that mRNA coded for SARS antigen can be delivered to human cells and once there can be used for production of the antigen within the cell. It is unique because it does not depend on any portion of the virus (live or attenuated) being introduced into the patient. Number 3 is defective virus and number four and five are replicate vectoral vaccines. The Development of Covid-19 Vaccine Safeguards Needed Nicole Lurie JAMA 7-6-2020 The fears, doubts and conspiracy theories concerning an entity that is at least six months away have begun with an air of fact that does not exist. Many wish to pontificate about the unknown, a few of the truly learned admit to knowing little. The public is ripe for such stories because of the missteps of the CDC and the FDA. What can renew the confidence of the public in these agencies which are so necessary for the good of the public welfare? These will be crucial months waiting for the outcomes of the therapeutic trials. Breeding time for those who wish to write a story, any story, reality or fantasy, fact or fiction, it will not matter. I believe that the prestigious medical journals, whose authors and peer reviewer's professional reputations rely on integrity will lay the foundation on which renewed trust can be built. They will: 1. Look for strong evidence of effectiveness, including key populations, the vulnerable and racially diverse. The results must be published in journals that are above reproach. These articles will need to be transparent with full disclosure from all those involved. 2. Look for strong evidence of safety with total transparency of the data so that populous make informed decisions. 3. Help develop an Informed Consent for Vaccine Use prior to approval - I am not in favor of any process that would make vaccine available prior to full evaluation. In a country that has chosen not to promote safe living practices (until recently) that are inexpensive and with zero side effects, are we now going to open pandora's box by exposing individuals to a partially tested vaccine on the grounds of compassion? Where was that compassion when thousands of lives could have been saved by rather simple means? 4. Employ a comprehensive safety monitoring system to rapidly report adverse events that only become visible after millions (not thousands) of doses have been administered. NUMBERS - compared to the week ending 7/5/20 In the secretive state of Florida, Governor DeSantis, without conscious, steadfastly refuses to issue a mandate to wear masks. On Friday Florida recorded 11,433 new cases of Covid. In the last two days Florida has recorded 856 new hospitalizations. The statewide death toll stands at 4200. DeSantis should be impeached for failing to protect the public welfare. Alabama - up 34% in berd s utilized, 8% increase in new cases California - up 11% in beds utilized, up 20% in new cases Connecticut - up 21% in beds utilized, up 38% in new cases Florida - up 27% in new cases Georgia - up 42% in beds utilized, up 17% in new cases Illinois - up 4% in beds utilized, up 15% in new cases Iowa - up 39% in beds utilized, up 29%% in new cases Louisiana - up 39% in beds utilized, up 64% in cases Maryland - down in beds utilized, up 11% in new cases Michigan - down in beds utilized, up 30% in new cases Mississippi - up 10% in beds utilized, down 5% in new cases New Jersey - down in beds utilized, down 16% in new cases New York - down in beds utilized, down 4% in new cases Ohio - up 34% in beds utilized, up 20% in new cases Pennsylvania - up 10% in beds utilized, up 25% in new cases South Carolina - up 17.3% in beds utilized, recorded its first death of a child, down 2% in new cases Texas - up 28% in beds utilized, up 28% in new cases Wisconsin - up 9% in beds utilized, up 24% in new cases For beds utilized, Georgia records the largest percentage increase, Texas the largest increase in absolute numbers. For increased new cases, Louisiana records the largest percentage increase at 64%, Texas the largest increase in absolute numbers at 55,223. Way to go Governor Abbott!! In just five months over 10% of our population has been infected and the number is rapidly rising. Yet a significant proportion of our population choose to ignore the devastating consequences on the health and economy of our country. Instead of doing everything possible to contain the disease they are doing everything possible to spread the disease even more. Enjoy the rest of the weekend Live Safely Be Well

That’s why you are hearing generic statements like "just do it.” "If Home Depot can be open schools can be open.” "Kids aren’t at risk anyway.” The last statement they don’t want to push too hard because while It does seem children aren’t high risk, they are still at risk. There more than likely be some children deaths when school reopen. I agree. Admittedly, anecdotally, remote learning was a mess for us the end of the school year. Teachers had no time to prepare a remote learning plan for the last two months of the school year. But it got better by the end. All of us had gotten into a routine: teachers, students, parents, etc. Schools should be spending the summer months preparing for more remote learning in the fall. They should not have to prepare for the onslaught of hundreds of kids going back into the building; how to distance and clean up after them. Or some wishy-washy, let's try to do both! Just put all of their resources behind remote learning and call it at that. Between all of my kid's friend's parents, siblings/cousins and others with school-age kids, and teacher friends; I do not know of any parents or teachers excited to send kids back into a school building. Nobody thinks it's a good idea.

It's already established that Americans don't trust this administration in regards to the pandemic. So if they're going to make the case for schools reopening, they actually have to make the case. A strategy. A plan. Right now, I'm hearing about the emotional side of it: "Schools must reopen. Kids are gonna fall behind. We need a return to normalcy." Right, cool...but are you doing any of the actual work to make this feel like a logical, practical decision? I'm not a Trump voter. So I'm sure (maybe?) there's a logic (possibly?) in their minds that this administration is trying to tap into. But while it's one thing to lock up immigrants or become buddies with North Korea, now you're talking about throwing my kids back into schools when you've done zero actual work to earn my trust with the pandemic. Not sure how that sells. But again, I'm not the target audience.

Instead of having the long hard discussions with a real team (Fauci and the medical experts at head of the table) and working thru the entire big picture and coming up with a jointly accepted strategy, Trump just does his normal tag line tweeting and then bashing anyone that doesn't simply fall in line (and that's despite Trump changing up on things mid stream).
