October 22, 20205 yr For anyone who hasn't watched it yet, if you want a great detailed point by point breakdown for the reasons why we're in the situation we're in right now, go watch Totally Under Control on hulu.
October 23, 20205 yr Weekly numbers in from Sweden. Same ole same ole. Very low deaths and very low number of people in intensive care (basically no changes from the very low numbers over the last couple of months). The positive cases continue to rise as does the % of positive out of the tests given. We are clearly in a 2nd but much smaller wave. The strange thing though is that we aren't getting any spikes at all in the serious cases or deaths. Much to take stock of here once we get another two months down the road. Generally, there have been a few scattered small clusters. One daycare where a bunch of staff all tested positive and a couple hockey teams are examples. One university town had a bit of a spike and the result was a call for action (or rather to lessen the action). Otherwise, there has actually been a small relaxation of the recommendations overall. We are in for a long haul here. That's the way it is being presented.
October 23, 20205 yr One of my fraternity brothers who use to be morbidly obese but has since lost a lot of weight before\during\after his kidney transplant just tested positive
October 23, 20205 yr Low population density + a saner, bluer population than many other low population density states?

I can only speak to VT with family there, but they're also very strict with their guidelines. The cutoffs they use for travel restrictions to/from other state counties is based on a predictive virology model instead of just raw cdc numbers which is much more strict. Mask rules are much more ubiquitous and a lot of the state is relying on delivery options for groceries etc. It's annoying because I literally can't visit my family up there since I can't quarantine and their cutoffs are so strict, but hard to argue with results. Vermont has always had a "don't like it? Tough sheet" attitude to them. Composting is mandatory up there for example and they don't hesitate to punish violations.

And I honestly think that we are at the point now where "beating” this virus really comes down to targeted shut downs and travel restrictions. We missed the boat on the broad scale shut downs. If we had all just sheltered in for a month back in February, and we isolated front liners and set up green zones and red zones then this would have been eradicated quickly. But we had a president ignoring the facts, scientists giving false hope because of political pressure and financial gains, and a society of me-firsts and don’t-tell-mes. I fear a large scale shut down is coming regardless of who wins in 10 days though. And we’ll be right back to where we were in May and June.
October 25, 20205 yr Sorry I'm about a week late with this: Weekly update from the Doc from last Sunday. https://www.nothingbutthetruthmd.com/2020/10/101820-covid-19-update.html MOVING INDOOR As colder temperatures become the norm in most of the United States, many activities that have been occuring outdoors will now move indoors. There should be little doubt that participating in indoor activities is less safe than participating in the same activity outdoor. Especially if distancing and masks are not strictly adhered to. In San Bernardino County, over the last 28 days, 71% of those infected with Covid attended an indoor family gathering in the last fourteen days. A total of 228 people out of 319 interviewed by contract tracers indicated that they attended an indoor gathering. A CDC report from April chronicled a funeral and a birthday party in Chicago that led to 16 confirmed cases and three deaths. There are numerous reports similar to this. COMMON SENSE - access to TV, radio, internet or printed material in the last several months and literate, you would have heard/read that activity indoors have been banned because of the increased risk of transmission. You ever wonder why Children's zoos don't have lions and tigers or grizzly bears? If you must participate in indoor activities please do so only while wearing a mask and distancing. The dichotomy that we daily face, the warnings of a coming wave, the lamenting over the increasing number of dead, are distinct from those who encourage activities that are less than safe. At times these are one and the same, as for example, Governor Murphy of New Jersey, encouraging distancing and masks while increasing the numbers allowed in restaurants and allowing High School basketball and wrestling. COLLEGE FOOTBALL For months now, there have been numerous reports of Covid outbreaks on College Football teams. Practices have been curtailed and games have been postponed. Most of the players on LSU have tested positive for Covid according to their coach. In a radio interview Monday, the athletic director, of Baylor University, Mark Rhoades, stated that 28 members of the football team and 14 members of the staff have tested positive. Most are symptomatic. This is criminal!! It appears that two of their games are being postponed. "Though this is an unfortunate outcome, we remain determined to return to the field in the safest manner possible." Safe? Really! I guess I missed the part about football being an essential element of life, worthy of risking the health and welfare of the athletes. It is clear that this is not safe. The Big Ten will be joining the lunacy shortly. The University of Florida is pausing their program because of an outbreak. I expected outbreaks, what I did not expect was those in authority, professing to care for their athletes, ignoring the outbreaks and continuing the lunacy after it became evident that their athletes could not be protected. There has been one death, and evidence of potential long term health consequences. At this point, I am not sure that additional deaths will make a difference. It is incongruent that the leaders of higher liberal education are sending their student athletes off to become infected and ignoring the science. Greed is a potent motivator. Clearly, the priority is not the health of the student athlete, but money! INCREASING CASELOAD Viruses are enigma that live on the edge of life. They do not eat or burn energy, they don't have metabolic process, don't produce waste and do not have sex. Its sole function is to replicate itself, and to accomplish this must invade a host that has energy. When a virus invades a cell, it inserts its own genome, and the viral genome takes control of the cells own genes. The cell's internal machinery begins to manufacture what the viral genes demand. Whenever an organism reproduces, its genes attempt to make exact copies of itself. Sometimes mistakes, "mutations" occur in the process. (antigen drift) The more advanced an organism , the more mechanisms exist to prevent mutations. (proofreading) Mammals mutate less frequently than bacteria, which mutate less frequently than viruses, and DNA viruses mutate less frequently than RNA viruses. Both Influenza and Coronavirus are RNA viruses. It is believed that the second wave of the Spanish Flu may have been the result of a mutation that increased the lethality of the virus. Another possibility explaining the jump in lethality of the Spanish Flu may be the phenomena known as "passage". When an organism of weak pathogenicity passes from living animal to living animal, it reproduces more efficiently which often increases virulence. Some have suggested that SARS-CoV-2 has mutated and become more infectious. The numbers have been going up for several weeks, long after students returned to school, and before the weather in most of the country had changed enough to alter behavior. We must at least consider the possibility that the increased number of cases that we are witnessing worldwide, are the result of a mutation (or "passage") that has increased infectivity, that the Ro number has changed. The longer this virus survives, jumping from host to host, should raise concerns that a more lethal variant will emerge, secondary to mutation or "passage." ELI LILLY HAS PAUSED IT'S MONOCLONAL ANTIBODY TRIAL BECAUSE OF A POSSIBLE MANUFACTURING PROBLEM. JOHNSON AND JOHNSON HAS PAUSED THEIR CLINICAL TRIAL OF VACCINE BECAUSE OF A HEALTH SAFETY CONCERN. ASSOCIATION BETWEEN ADMINISTRATION OF SYSTEMIC CORTICOSTEROIDS AND MORTALITY AMONG CRITICALLY ILL PATIENTS WITH COVID-19; A META ANALYSIS JAMA 10/5/20 Meta analysis = systematically combining pertinent qualitative and quantitative data from several selected studies to develop a single conclusion. Data was derived from seven controlled trial (1073 patients) in 12 countries from 2/26 - 6/9. Of the 1073 patients, 647 died, Lower all case mortality was found in those who received steroids. Steroids - 678 patients, 222 deaths 32.7% No steroids - 1025 patients, 425 deaths, 41.4% CLINICAL OUTCOMES IN YOUNG VERSUS ADULTS HOSPITALIZED WITH COVID-19 J. Cunningham, MD JAMA October 9, 2020 Young was defined as ages 18-34, the average was 28. Records from 419 hospitals from 4-1-20 to 6-30-20 provided the source material. 3222 hospitalized, non-pregnant patients were reviewed 21% received ICU care 10% received mechanical ventilation 2.7% died Unfortunately we do not know the total of young people who were infected during that time period. NUMBERS Deaths - 219,311 Hospital bed utilization - every state except for California and Louisiana experienced an increase in bed utilization. New weekly cases - every state but California and Louisiana experienced an increase in new weekly cases. New Jersey up for the eighth consecutive week Connecticut experienced the largest number, 9000, and greatest percentage increase 65% Illinois also experienced a large increase at 44%. Several other states also experienced double digit increases. Enjoy the rest of the day Live safer Be Well

October 25, 20205 yr Sadly, the reaction is completely expected and insane. Best wishes for a speedy recovery to the ill.
October 25, 20205 yr Trump came out with the Marsha, Marsha, Marsha yesterday. Jesus Pence negative and continuing with his schedule. Even if tested everyday there’s a good possibility one of these tests will be positive with him exposing others during that time between tests. That’s essential alright.

October 26, 20205 yr 3 hours ago, M.C. said: Biden tweet from a year ago: Is there a score from during the Obama/Biden years to show that the US was prepared while the other 194 weren’t? If so, that’d be more disappointing than what this article and score actually says. According to the score, the US was the most prepared overall, coming in first in 5 of the 6 categories. From the score (and 2020 real life), it seems no one was prepared for a pandemic.
