June 10, 20214 yr Flashback MAY 2020 – The Washington Post: "A new Democratic-aligned political action committee advised by retired Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the former head of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, is planning to deploy technology originally developed to counter Islamic State propaganda in service of a domestic political goal — to combat online efforts to promote President Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. The group, Defeat Disinfo, will use artificial intelligence and network analysis to map discussion of the president’s claims on social media. It will seek to intervene by identifying the most popular counter-narratives and boosting them through a network of more than 3.4 million influencers across the country — in some cases paying users with large followings to take sides against the president. The initiative reflects fears within the Democratic Party that Trump’s unwavering digital army may help sustain him through the pandemic, as it has through past controversies, even as the economy craters, tens of thousands have died, and Trump suffers in the polls. "It’s often said campaigns are a battle of ideas, but they’re really a battle of narratives,” said David Eichenbaum, a Democratic media consultant who is a senior adviser to the PAC. "Today those narratives spread quickly online.” The initiative is run by Curtis Hougland, who is using open-source technology initially incubated with funding from DARPA, the Pentagon’s research arm, as part of an effort in 2015 to combat extremism overseas. June 10, 20214 yr The second is a small study of 255 and it hasn’t been peer-reviewed. Fantastic science! 100 million vaccinations is not enough data for safety. But an unreviewed study of 255 is good enough.

June 10, 20214 yr Both daughters are now officially done with school for the year. 15 year old was on a hybrid schedule (Mon, Wed virtual, Tues, Thurs In-person) the entire year, with no issues from Covid whatsoever. 8-year old daughter was in-person 5 days/week the entire year, save for a 2 week period when 2 in her class tested positive, and her class went virtual for 2 weeks as a result. Here's the end of the year statistics from my 8-year old's school: Quote *this summary is based on my data collection and is true to the best of my knowledge based on my contact tracing and notes this year. -Total reported covid cases Students 2020/21: 16 (8 of the 16 were positive over school breaks with no impact on school) -Total confirmed staff/teacher covid cases: 5 -Strep throat and flu: extreme rarity compared to previous years -3 grade levels: PreK, kindergarten and 6th (our largest grade) all had zero student cases all year. -We had no known covid cases associated with school sports -The most common traced source of covid infection for student/staff was transfer within the home from a family member -Our highest case/highest absence times: following Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks -a critical factor in maintaining our school health seems to have been the compliance of parents in keeping students home when they had any sign of illness and the efforts of our teachers to support those students during absence. Successful contact tracing, diligent protocols and mitigation of our few cases prevented spread. So glad my daughters schools made the decision to go in person. That bit of normalcy was critical.
June 10, 20214 yr Have a friend still taking steroids from her bout of covid back in March. I had dinner with her shortly after and you could hear it still in her chest which is why I reached out today to see how it's going. Not so great it sounds like. Lung function not normal.......yet, but hope no permanent damage has been done.
