The 2020 Corona Thread

Oh no!! Special report CNN , FAUCI WARNS EVEN VACCINATED CAN GET LONG COVID!!! :o..............oh wait there is context to the fearmongering, a study of 1500 healthcare workers in  Israel found 2% of those vaccinated had symptoms and 20% of those 2% had symptoms that lasted for 6 months but then were gone. Total of 6 people out of 1500 and that gets the fearmongering headline, just terrible. This is dangerous because many people just look at headlines and will say see vaccine dose not work. The appropriate headline is long covid rare among vaccinated

Fearing the efficacy of your vaccine?

So what have we really learned with delta? The big take is that COVID is here to stay for a good while to come.  We need to plan our strategies accordingly.

The big takeaway is if you are vaccinated then you are not in serious danger most likely, if you are an unvaxxed moron Oh well that is your problem, by this time next year no one will be focusing on cases anymore because that is not the issue. For most of us Covid is just another type of flu if you even get a breakthrough case. With the boosters and soon the vaccine for children this will be in our rearview mirror but for the morons it will be an oncoming train and I have no sympathy

North Texas runs out of pediatric ICU beds amid Covid surge

But please, crow about your rights and don't wear a mask or use other standard medical methods to stop the spread of a disease.

We wouldn't want to bother you poor little turdflakes.

That’s the immediate take. The bigger longer term picture is hopefully as you allude but we are no where near that at this stage.

The state of New South Wales which includes Sydney now back on full lockdown. 500 military patrol the city and will give out $4000 fines to anyone out of their house illegally. There are very few valid reasons to be outside. The level of COVID is super super low. They gave a zero tolerance policy. A couple of cases is enough to shutdown an entire region with millions of people.

Australia seems like a bit of a dystopian nightmare right now. It's nuts. They're beyond lost.

The interesting part is that they are just as rabid in thinking they are "right” and everyone else is stupid as others feel in other places.

Yep. The Twitter comments on that article provide an interesting cross section of views. It reminds me of North America back in the spring of 2020.

The state of Victoria is already in its 6th lockdown. Just a few more ought to take care of it.

At some point we'll have to get community spread under control. Boosters will definitely help with that. We were on a good trajectory at the beginning of summer pre-delta, if we can get back to that by next spring without another predominant VOC, we'll be in good shape long term.

Uhh, they do test for it. With genomic sequencing tests. They don't test everybody, but they pull samples to know which variants are prevalent.

In NJ for example 10% of positive tests were used to conduct genomic sequencing tests.

This is why you remain stupid.

Only 3% in Africa or something like that.

If I had to guess, it’s much higher in cities.

Maybe in some. I have good friend from college living in Nairobi and they were just at about 2% when I met him two weeks ago. They are basically without vaccine generally.

My wife’s sister and family live in Malawi.  They got the vaccine, but they live in the capital.

I looked it up. Total in Malawi vaccinated is 1%. No doubt higher in the capital.

One percent seems high to be honest.  Lol

Probably anything over 0 rounded up to 1% 😐

Evaluation of mRNA-1273 (Moderna) SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine in Adolescents

From the top Reddit comment:

One thing worth pointing out is that they provided a much better breakdown of effectiveness, not only looking at the disease itself, but also looking at infection.

For those who are not aware, COVID-19 is the disease, SARS-Cov-2 is the virus. You can have the virus without the disease. In earlier trials, they had only reported COVID-19 disease incidence, here, they also reported SARS-Cov-2 infections.

nejmoa2109522_f3.thumb.jpeg.38c4a9704cdf1c81f07b0e5264d50f61.jpeg

So by the Per-Protocol analysis, using the secondary case definition, they reported 93.3% effectiveness of the vaccine 14 days after the second dose (47.9-99.9). But, when looking at SARS-Cov-2 infection, the effectiveness is just 55.7% (16.8-76.4).

This means the vaccine is "leaky", it protects against the disease without approaching 100% effectiveness against infection. And the CDC found vaccinated people infected with the Delta variant have similar viral load than infected unvaccinated people, which they concluded was a signal both were equally contagious.

This is basically a confirmation of observations from Israel, the UK and Iceland from a vaccine-maker's RCT.

Also, something interesting from the table is that 45 out of 65 SARS-Cov-2 infections in the placebo group were asymptomatic. That is very interesting data as well. That suggests two thirds of all SARS-Cov-2 infections among 12-17 year-olds are completely asymptomatic, even without the vaccine.
