By Jeanna Bryner March 21, 2020 One persistent myth is that this virus, called SARS-CoV-2, was made by scientists and escaped from a lab in Wuhan, China, where the outbreak began. A new analysis of SARS-CoV-2 may finally put that latter idea to bed. A group of researchers compared the genome of this novel coronavirus with the seven other coronaviruses known to infect humans: SARS, MERS and SARS-CoV-2, which can cause severe disease; along with HKU1, NL63, OC43 and 229E, which typically cause just mild symptoms, the researchers wrote March 17 in the journal Nature Medicine. "Our analyses clearly show that SARS-CoV-2 is not a laboratory construct or a purposefully manipulated virus," they write in the journal article. Kristian Andersen, an associate professor of immunology and microbiology at Scripps Research, and his colleagues looked at the genetic template for the spike proteins that protrude from the surface of the virus. The coronavirus uses these spikes to grab the outer walls of its host's cells and then enter those cells. They specifically looked at the gene sequences responsible for two key features of these spike proteins: the grabber, called the receptor-binding domain, that hooks onto host cells; and the so-called cleavage site that allows the virus to open and enter those cells. That analysis showed that the "hook" part of the spike had evolved to target a receptor on the outside of human cells called ACE2, which is involved in blood pressure regulation. It is so effective at attaching to human cells that the researchers said the spike proteins were the result of natural selection and not genetic engineering. Didn't you post this last March?

There probably never going to be definitive proof one way or another. There are scientists who are in both camps. In the grand scheme of things what does it really matter? China could tell us they did it and we wouldn't do much about it.

August 26, 20214 yr The prevailing consensus on the origins hasn't changed much since last spring. A majority of virologists still believe it was a zoonotic spillover. This is based on extensive genetic analysis and observation of evolution of other closely related coronaviruses. Toast is also right that the null hypothesis is it is not man-made. And I'll have to say it again as I do every time, a lab leak does not automatically mean it was man made. Wuhan researchers could've easily been infected with a sample they collected in the field or in the lab, without having ever modified it. There have been photos of them handling live bats with inadequate PPE in the field. https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/virus-origins-nature-lab/2021/06/03/dd50eb62-c4a9-11eb-93f5-ee9558eecf4b_story.html#click=https://t.co/4ElSS1eulj https://science.sciencemag.org/content/early/2021/08/16/science.abh0117 https://www.sydney.edu.au/news-opinion/news/2021/07/08/biologists-publish-review-sars-cov-2-origin-evidence-edward-holmes.html

Wouldn't be surprised if a few of them end up in the hospital none of them are vaccinated
August 26, 20214 yr I think it’s pretty obvious at this point that COVID-19 a: is a bat corona virus that started out in the wild, and b: was negligently released from the lab.

I have no idea what his symptoms were but he indicated he was feeling much better yesterday and today, the 2 days I was on site. I wasn’t around him but I spent much of the day yesterday with people that are around him regularly. Everyone on the job is vaccinated as far as I know so I’m hoping it was just a cold and if not the percentages are in my favor to not have caught anything especially since we were outside for almost the entire time. And he tested positive for COVID today.
August 26, 20214 yr So today, a cancer patient was turned away from a hospital because they had no available beds. Maybe they should turn away the unvaccinated instead.
