Juggs machine... etc.  You go on IR you can't do any of that stuff.

Ike Reese always talks about that staying after practice and working on moves etc with Tra Thomas.

Much more to the NFL work week than just the full speed full team practice.

Not sure exact rules on IR players. Can’t practice with team. But they can run on the side field  and stuff I think. No doubt they can find JUG machines and practice partners off team facilities. Easy nowadays.

No doubt the PS rules changed. Makes a significant difference. So can agree to an extent on what you are saying there. But we’ve seen it in action some now. Have adapted to the change. Think you and I both have paid attention noticing it really is kind of a big deal.

But not even close to seeing an odd 53 man roster like this.

It's why I'm curious.  Something is up. I mean NE had only one QB at one point.   They must have figured something out we don't know yet.

Not guys put on IR to start their season ...without having designation to return.   Not the redshirt guys.

And again...do you want Ojomo or Ringo doing stuff away from the team or with them?

I really think you just miss it because f your tunnel vision with Sermon taking up a roster spot last year.

But I'm telling you..there is something different going on now that defies the practical logic of the next men up on game day being the bottom of the 53.  I think the view is the 16 PS guys are equal if not even ahead in thar regard...just that the organization doesn't mind losing them or think the odds are slimmer...than the bottom 53 guys.

In other words... not necessarily better now...but better potential gets you on the 53.  Being on either can get you in the game.

It isn't logical in common sense ...but I can see it with how these 53 man rosters have been set up this year.

Here is a legit question.    Sipposs is perfect example to use.

Let's say for 6 weeks we can't find another punter clearly better.

He gets activated for 3 weeks to play...then we put him on the roster for 3 weeks... then we cut him...bring another punter and activate that guy from the PS to punt...then can we bring Sipposs back on our PS to punt again for another 3 weeks?

How does it work...do things reset if you release a guy?

Idk.... but I'm sure we will find out.

Like can we alternate Covey and Allen all year if we release them at some point?   Can it be done to keep a roster spot for someone else.. and just use mostly the call up from the PS each week?

Idk ... but something is up. It's just too weird with the current 53.

Whelp I considered and even agreed with much of your points. But was differing with you on some key aspects. Seeing that there are more options. I just don’t get emotional considering stuff like this. So you just continuing to disregard what I’m explaining to you and take some lame cheap shot trying to discredit my point by not understanding my example use only of Sermon…instead trying to instead counter what I’m clearly spelling out as what I believe it should be handled with any player in that situation….nothing to do with any personal opinion of Sermon the individual player. But it partly was behind me mentioning how they handled him specifically last season as the wrong way to go about it. Which is what you aren’t agreeing with me now on about. Not Sermon. But the redshirting of a player not likely to ever dress. A player that Rosie worries and feels some other team has interest in. So roster on 53…then  IR them.

IR players can’t participate on field practicing with the team. But I do think they can be involved in all meeting and that stuff.

Nope. Can only call up a guy from PS like three times. Can only protect so many PS players each week. And can only protect so many times. So your scenario is what I believe to be exactly the limit of what can’t be done.

They can call up Covey the first three games for  return duties. Then the choice must be made about permanent call up to the official 53. If he shines and performs. He earns the spot. If he doesn’t show much improvement then maybe he is released. The benefit of this is potentially developing Allen far enough to take the job over. Gives three more weeks to get him there. Or the case is Covey has injured hamstring. Nobody poaching him injured. But maybe he still isn’t ready yet. So store him on the PS. Call up Allen until he’s ready. Buys some time at the least. Highly likely that one or two players on the 53 get injured first three weeks. So spots open up. Almost can predict having two additional spots week three than week one. Like I said using Ringo as an example: if things get tight just put Ringo on the IR to give that spot to a player of need.

But I won’t continue any discussion that isn’t respectful and intelligent enough. Interesting topic I think really. Because the situation did take a significant change the last few years. But if you just discount my point with statements like my example I used being the most obvious one to use fresh from last season on Sermon being over some personal agenda I am blinded by ….instead of considering and understanding what I believe is a very valid point and differing opinion….then the educated portion of this discussion has finished and discussion is done. These are newer rules. We both are recognizing how they are effecting roster decisions much different than in the past. But feel my viewpoint has been formed by paying attention and forming at the lowest:an educated guess or assumption. I don’t have you use Sermon as an example if it actually is blocking your openminded consideration of my point. Just felt like the easiest way to explain my thinking and position on how it should be handled. Since we both know exactly the situation occurring with him last season. But we can change the example to some fake name if I need to for you not to get emotional blocked on the actual point being made. Just would need to explain a whole fake scenario occurring around the fake made up player to best use wanting to place him on IR instead of active roster. Ringo is my top example this season. He’s third string corner only being protected…not expecting him playing.

I prefer Ringo and Ojomo on the field.  I'm not sure about the IR and what happens if the player is found not to be hurt?   Idk... again it's my point.  Something is up and we don't understand it yet.

What happens after 3 times being called up?

I get he can't be protected... but what f they don't care about protecting the player?  And what if gets released and resigned?

Is Ringo 3rd string CB... or the 7th guy in line?   They have 7 right?   I forget the names of the other guy....Goodrich, Ricks and Ringo... isn't the guy I'm missing the #4?

But either way...I think we differ because you are worried about protecting the PS guys.... in my mind they are already expendable. It's why they are on there.

Can Covey be brought up more than 3 times...but just loses his protection?  Idk ...we are missing things here because we are thinking old school.

We think the best 53 make the roster...the current best 53... and we worry about losing PS guys.  Old way a guy like Ward was ineligible to be on PS now....was only for guys in their 1st  two seasons.  Covid changed the rules and it seems teams are manipulating it to the fullest now.

Josh Jobe. I believe Ricks would be #4.

Thanks....I read Jobe was the guy on the outside when they have been using Bradberry inside.

You're welcome.

Yes, that's what I understood. I love the cross-training in the secondary. Gives a DC so many more options between different games/match-ups.

I'm excited to see the defense Sunday... see these young kids play.

Reading they put in a new rule that handoffs must be parallel or behind the QB.

I see PFF ranked our ST as 31st. So it isn’t just me seeing those groups as very poor.

  • Author

Ranking 31 last season on ST when you have Elliott just killing it kicking would seem almost impossible.

  • Author

Of all the meddling Rosie has done over all these years….this seems like the most obvious one for him to have gotten involved with. ST have been terrible. Just no denying it.

Rosie forced McDermott out as DC. Pedey with all his assistants. On and on…but Clay coaching ST a blind man could see isn’t working.
