The preseason games will be more meaningful and entertaining this year than in years past.

If Hurts goes 8-15 with 2 int, there will be panic regardless of what was said about him in camp.  If he leads the team down the field in back to back efficient TD drives, then he'll be anointed the savior regardless of what was said about him in camp.

Ditto any one of the large group of young players tasked with bringing some playmaking ability to the offense.  Just one big play from a WR under the preseason lights would be enough to blow open the perspective of their role on offense.  If Watkins, Reagor, or Fulgham break loose for 50 yards and multiple big plays in a half, the whole city will label them the starting WR opposite Smith.

We are starved for discussion fodder and training camp just doesn't provide anything useful aside from who is running with the first team and who isn't.  Actual performance whispers are all but meaningless.

Just some random comments for people who didn't watch the game and have no intention to do so. I find myself being more annoyed at the result of the game than I probably should. It's ridiculous t

Damn, now McLane is reading my stuff in here.  Talking about running backs making the roster:

Rookie Kenneth Gainwell gets a spot, although the jury is still on whether it’s justified.

Preseason performances are pretty meaningless too.  Lighting it up is better than sucking, but none of it matters until the game plans go in.  That said... missing wide open receivers would be a bad look, gameplan or not.  Meanwhile, hitting open receivers from the pocket would be a nice step forward.

Sure was.  And also incapable of consistently passing out of the pocket, even in college.

Missing wide open receivers, even warming up in a practice is pretty bad at this level too.  But I guess as he warms up, he gets more accurate?  Which must mean by opening day he could be Tom Brady.

Careful, you’re going to trigger some squirts for Hurts’ers

Sixers aren't broken, just that when given the choice, no FA basketball player wants to live in Philly.  Even guys like Lowry, Morris twins, Ellington who are Philly natives stay away.  Sixers, like the Bucks have to draft and trade their way to a Championship.

His numbers are inflated by holding the ball too long, he's actually had solid talent on his OL, but he takes too many sacks - those don't count against his QB rating (but do count for QBR and FO ratings) which is why his raw numbers look so good, by taking sacks instead of throwing the ball away he inflates his completion % and his Y/A.

I still think the key stats for a QB are team stats, points and yards, do you move the ball consistently and score points. Houston has never cracked the top ten with Watson at QB despite having decent though not great talent.

Please show me the solid talent he has had since coming into the league besides Tunsil. Legitimately PFF (and most scouts and analysts) disagrees with your take

Literally about three months ago you told me they were close to special. His rookie year they were ranked 32nd in the league by pff. His second year in the league they were ranked 23rd. His third year in the league, their best year, they were ranked 20. Last year they were 23rd. 3 out of the 4 years they were a bottom 10 offensive line according to pff.

And I will even go a step further last year the only OLineman on the Texans that had a grade of 70 or higher was tunsil everyone else was in the 60s

let’s just go individually since you seem to just ignore the fact they have been bottom for most of his career

tunsil— 75.4

nick Martin— 56.1

Zach Fulton— 63

tytus howard— 62.1

Senio kelemete— 54.5

roderick Johnson— 64.5

charloe heck— 58.6

Brent qvale— 53.3

beau benzwedel— didn’t qualify

that seems like a solid oline? One player with a grade over a 65 is now considered solid. Don’t get me wrong watson has his issues holding onto the ball but their oline has been below average to bad for 5 years outside of tunsil. Now if you want me to I can do the last three years prior to 2020 and it’ll be very similar.

I’ll disagree the sixers decided it was smart when they had cap space to spend it on horford. They are paying for the mistakes of bad drafting but also when they actually had cap (not this year) they pissed it away on horford who was old, breaking down and a horrific fit instead of spreading it out and getting guys. Instead of spending wisely they wanted a fourth star (thought Harris could be that at the time— he’s not)

Not a fan of BLG by any stretch of the imagination but I try to read all camp notes.  This is interesting:

"The first team kickoff coverage unit: Marcus Epps, Kevon Seymour, T.J. Edwards, Genard Avery, K’Von Wallace, Grayland Arnold, Jordan Howard, Richard Rodgers, Craig James, and Avonte Maddox.

The second team kickoff coverage unit: Josiah Scott, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, Joe Ostman, Shaun Bradley, Elijah Riley, Boston Scott, Hakeem Butler, Richard Rodgers, Travis Fulgham, Michael Jacquet.”

He said on Gainwell and Huntley were returning kicks. Note the only back up RB missing is Johnson.  Corey Clements was a force on coverage teams.  The fourth or fifth RB may well come down to STs.  Note Rodgers on both. He was a force on STs last year as was Craig James, when he played. Note Avery and Ostman of the stand up LBs but no Johnson. Seventh rounder needs to be begging to play teams.  Same with Stoll and Jackson of the TEs.  Presume no Taylor because of the quad injury.   And finally JJAW on STs.  Only chance he has to make the roster is by playing STs.

Noticed that as well.  Very important to pay attention to KO coverage units and who's lining up.  Not sure you want Dick Rod, who most likely is TE2 to be on coverage units however.

This season is win win. Hurts will either do well and show glimpses of a franchise QB or play terribly which means we have at least a top 10 pick.

I don’t really see a reason to be so negative towards him when the season hasn’t started. It’s not like we’re contenders and are just a solid QB away from competing.

If they really plan on keeping Ertz then Rodgers should be cut. Jackson seems to be showing something enough that another team with intrigue over his size might take a flier on him when he hits waivers. Stoll is also an interesting prospect but more likely a PS candidate.

Or he’ll be just ok, win some games with his legs and put the Eagles in no mans land for a QB in the draft.

They can still trade up.  If they make the playoffs its because Hurts was a big part of that.

Which would be the worst case scenario. It would take a boat load to trade up for an unproven prospect when they finish 7-10 or 8-9, miss the playoffs and have the 16th pick

Oh... just Devante Smith. NBD

I was gonna post the same thing. Frankly, If they really like both Stoll and Jackson, they should cut Rodgers even if they move on from Ertz. Keep Rodgers on speed dial in case of injury.

Of course this is the Eagles, and we need low upside veteran backups to hopefully scratch out 7 wins.

They very nearly made the playoffs last year with the worst QB play in the NFL, an OL that wouldn't start in the SEC, and WRs that wouldn't start in the old Big East.  This is a *special* division.  They could easily make the playoffs with Hurts having a bad, discouraging year.

Howie has learned nothing if he signs Mailata to a huge multi-year deal before the season starts.

Not that anyone really cares, but the Karpov lecture was cancelled. Was actually looking forward to it.

Oh, and if anyone is interested, I have tickets to several Eagles games available. I'm actually kind of excited about the preseason games.

Or could end up being a bargain

Per Kempski and BLG's camp breakdowns:

Dillard has looked terrible, they don't think he'll make the team, and they'll find a taker for him in a trade. Said no reason to keep him because he has one of the highest camp numbers on the team and he's not one of the 53 best players on the team.

Reagor has looked awful. Tragedy aside, whenever he's practiced he's been awful. Has been run off his routes and has no timing with the QBs.

Mailata has been awesome.

Quez Watkins has really impressed.

Jason Huntley got praise from Kempski, BLG and the BWF guys as well.

Zech Mcphearson gotten high praise from every Eagles reporter. Say he might be the standout of camp for all the young guys.

Dillard and Reagor are a real nice back-to-back on Howie's resume.

I heard he had a really nice back and forth with Slay. Only one play I know but I'm sure I heard he was looking better day by day.
