Hysterical response actually.  There is a lot of room between flawless and the players on the Eagles that I do not think deserve a shot.  You know that.  I know that.  Everyone knows that.  And most 2nd round QB's labeled as mediocre passers are not handed starting jobs.  Again, a lot of room between Hurts and "out of the box flawless."  Just a remarkable exaggeration when defending a 4 win team.

Teams are going to have losing seasons.  That goes with the territory.  Win a championship, draft in the lower part of the rounds and hang onto the players that got the trophy and watch the team age.  Then suffer through a losing season or two.    That is going to happen.

You conclude that on a team that has flaws and a few aging stars that the second round choice, who undoubtedly has flaws but also a record of starting for two playoff level programs in college, doesn’t deserve a shot.  Especially in an era where regular QB participants in playoffs were players not drafted at the start of the first round.  Worse case is Hurts flops going into a year with double the number of top 50 picks as is usual and the Eagles draft higher. (I know, I know.  Howie.  But maybe Lurie sees the light after two losing seasons).  Or maybe Johnson fixes the bad mechanics as Hurts seems to be a willing learner and willing to work to improve, which I griped about Carson seeming to be unwilling to do.  I am not defending.  I am accepting the things I cannot control and seeking the positives that might arise from the situation.  But as the option to Hurts is Flacco or a potentially awful trade for Watson, why not take a shot with Hurts.

I will also be honest.  I like coaches that try to build on what players can do as opposed to forcing players to play into schemes that don’t fit them. (Stoutland with a too small Kelce using what he does well to his advantage, turning an over anxious Brooks into a player when asked about coming back points out he did it before and came back better, Seumalo who does better in a C stance, etc. Struggle to anchor? See a lot of bull rush in TC to get better).  So I am all for giving Sirianni a shot as well.  I am also a huge believer in fundamentals.  Watch the Fluff with Dave and Fran, TC Live, and really watch the position drills.  You can see what the position coaches are working on.  Maybe they don’t win this year but I like what they are building.

Just some random comments for people who didn't watch the game and have no intention to do so. I find myself being more annoyed at the result of the game than I probably should. It's ridiculous t

Speaking of pre-season.  I see our game this thursday is not on national tv live.  (8/19 is though).  Any suggestions on how us out of towners can see it?

VPN - change your server location to Philly and stream locally from the TV website. Use an HDMI cable to connect your computer to your TV.

If you want to pay for it: Game Pass

If not then check out www.nflbite.com

Looks like they changed the site address a little

Listening to Caplan, he said teams had a third round grade on Watkins for his on-field play but his football character was poor and that caused him to drop. I know he had to take time off at Southern Miss to get his grades up to make it back to the team.

As for Tyree Jackson, he said he’s been told that his football character has a high. That’s exactly what you want to hear from a project with his athletic tools.

*******

I just wait for NFL Network to replay the preseason games. In years past they’ve replayed every game.

I have Game Pass.  Locally, because I am in territory, on it the game isn’t live (it is on my Eagles channel), but it is available immediately afterwards.  On occasion the Ravens or Steelers bump the Eagles here, so I always have access to the game.  I get for the All 22 because you can’t really see the secondary defenses and WR routes on broadcast TV.

Matt Alkire gets All 22 tapes of college games and regularly posts snips on his Twitter feed.  I recommend following him just for those.  Former poster on the Blog.

Ive always thought the A#1 job of a coach is to tailor their gameplan and coaching philosophy to the players they have, not the other way around.  In fact, thats the very definition of coaching IMO.

From what he did this offseason, sounds like maybe Watkins has matured a bit.  I suspect being around Hurts and Ward this offseason wore some of their work habits onto him.

Frankly, I liked Jackson coming out as a QB from Buffalo.  Seemed to be sharp and I thought he might be a good developmental QB selection in the late rounds or as a priority FA.  He was on my value board. He was the MAC MVP in college.  Was stoked when they signed him as a TE prospect. If he really is playing well, he is the sort of player that teams keep and are inactive.

He got his shot last year and he sucked outside of a few times he used his legs. He can get the freak out and the faster the better so they don't get tied to him past this season. Yeah, that means I hope Hurts tanks as fast as possible because he is not a starting QB1 for a serious contender. He does not have the accuracy or arm to win a game when he can't run. He will not march a team down the field like Foles did in the Super Bowl. He's a "play maker" which gets you a crappy draft pick and out in the first round.

I think 2 very important sides of the same coin are tailoring what you do to what you have versus sculpting what you look for and what you have into what you want to do.

It's a fine line.  In December during a division race, you spend all week and all Sunday doing the former.

From March through early September, it really should be more of the later sprinkled in.

Not that simple, you could tailor your scheme to Hurts, for example, but what if he gets hurt or can't ahndle the job? Now what? Keep 3 mobile QBs on the roster? Good luck finding 3 QBs with that kind of athleticism how can play QB.

What Sirianni seems to be doing is installing HIS offense, working Hurts into it, and then adding elements that can take advantage of Hurts' athleticism. But the base scheme is independent of Hurts, so if you had to play Flacco or Mullens, you're not starting from scratch.

AP is going to the HOF.  Aside from him, unless they just relax the requirements, I don't think there is a single active RB who will have a case.

Hurts didn't have a real shot last year, coming in cold (Wentz got the snaps with the #1s and Peddy wasn't a developmental coach, and the QB coach?).

Hurts has a NFL arm, that isn't the issue. His mechanics, field vision and decision making need work, but you can say that for most 1st and 2nd year QBs - the ones that keep the starting job are the ones that grow into the job. His legs will buy him time to master the nuances of the position. Steve Young wasn't exactly a great QB his first few years. He was downright awful on a really bad Bucs team, then he got to sit for a few years and learn how to play QB.

What matters this season is not how well Hurts plays, but whether by week 17 he's a much better QB than he was in week 1, that is, if the arrow is pointing up, you stick with him, if he looks lost then it's time to move on.

Could end being a Waller type TE.

Scheme and preparation still matter more, but he's checking boxes farther down the list.

But it is way cheaper than NFL ticket with three times the benefit. I can watch any game I want at pretty much any time I want plus the All 22.    I get my money’s worth out of it.

BS his arm will not take them where they need and I hope he goes ASAP. Worst thing that could happen is 8-9 so Howie can save face and bring him back another year.

Nick can grow into the play calling part of the job, this year is about development, and he was doing a lot of the scheming in Indianapolis.

But he's been what I expected, the teaching coach you need on a rebuilding team. I've stated repeatedly that what must have got him hired is having "the plan," much like AR, and the reports from practice suggest just that, he's got everything thought out and organized. This nonsense about wanting a "puppet" is just that - what Lurie was probably hoping to find, after Chip and Peddy, was the next AR. That is, a young coach who has it "figured out," knows what he wants to accomplish and has a road map to get there.

Now in 2023, if all goes well, we can worry about whether he can game coach well enough to go deep into the playoffs. Rich people problems.

Gotta say, the "Well, Hurts was thrown into the cold, he stood no chance!" argument is probably the dumbest argument I've ever read on this board when it comes to him.

3 and two half games with no TC, an offense in shambles and a coach that looked like he had quit isn’t much of a chance.  So Flacco?  Mullens?  Since you want Hurts gone, exactly who plays QB?  Really sounds like you are afraid he will perform well enough to lower the draft choice so basically play to tank and lose.   Is the inaccuracy based on those 3 and two half games?   And the arm question is garbage. He actually may be better throwing bombs than intermediate throws across the middle of the field. Not a starting QB1 for a serious contender?  The Eagles are a serious contender right now.  Pass some of what you have been smoking my way.
