A lot of teams are benching their starting QBs now in preseason. It isn’t just an Eagles thing.

How many of those starting QBs have only 4 starts under their belt, and are in a brand new system?

Just some random comments for people who didn't watch the game and have no intention to do so. I find myself being more annoyed at the result of the game than I probably should. It's ridiculous t

If Hurts isn't sick, he gets 10-20 snaps and is somewhere in the top 5-10 on that list.

Much ado about nothing.

"Out of concern for the safety of the fans and the team, the Eagles have canceled tonight’s public practice at Lincoln Financial Field due to the inclement weather forecast as a result of Hurricane Henri. Ticketmaster will provide refunds for fans who purchased tickets. Tonight’s public practice served as a fundraiser for the Eagles Autism Foundation, where all of the proceeds from ticket sales would be invested in helping families with autism through innovative research projects and grants. There is pretty good evidence that you have to gradually elevate to maximum exertion in any sport, especially 60’ of football.  We’ve all said this for the last few years.  The 4th quarter week 1 is going to hit them hard.  To go from nothing to that duration of football is a rough transition.

It was common practice around the league for the starters to play the equivalent of maybe 1-and-a-half games through the first three preseason games and then skip week 4.  Not exactly a prototype conditioning program.

They still have three weeks to ramp up their stamina.

  • It's a controlled environment and they actually get to run more snaps than a game.
  • The offense doesn't have to get a first down to continue to run plays.
  • The offense and defense can get in work simultaneously against new looks on the other side.
  • They can dictate situations (red zone, two minute) without being beholden to the game flow.
  • It enables real-time coaching after each snap.

I would say the only downside would be less than full-speed contact/tackling.  But if your priority is health, then it is a compromise they're willing to make.

Other downsides:

  • Different adrenaline levels,
  • crowd noise,
  • reacting to UNEXPECTED changes

There are lots of positives to intersquad practice, but it should NOT be seen as a replacement for game action.   The 'health' aspect is laughable.  The odds of getting hurt in a game aren't higher than getting hurt in 'live' practice against an opponent.  And if they ARE different, then you aren't actually preparing for a game.

Play the game, gets some reps in addition to the inter-squad practices.

Lowie is terrified and scarred from all the injuries the last few years, so naturally they're over-correcting by keeping the team in bubble wrap until September 12.

A coward dies a 1000 times before his death, but the valiant taste of death only once.   You can't play scared.  You can't coach scared.

Well, we'll see if Hurts gets 10-20 snaps in #3 this week.

Adrenaline level in a preseason game?  Really?

Crowd noise?  PRESEASON crowd noise?  They can make more noise with the speakers at the Novacare.

Unexpected changes?  Because the coaching staff can't simulate that in a practice?

There is a fair debate here and it will be difficult to measure.  Were the Eagles 5-12 in 2021 because their roster sucked or what is reliance of intersquad practices?

Those are pass attempts, not snaps. And the reports before he got sick were "a series or two, if he plays at all”. And some of those guys only played once so far

Adrenaline level, yes...stepping on to a real field, under the real lights, in front of crowd will have a different feel than a controlled practice.   I suppose you missed the reaction of Benny LeMay on the Colts on a particular play in the preseason.  Well, he was flagged for "taunting" and nothing really happened on the play that would warrant it, but would he have reacted the same way in a controlled practice?  Likely not.  Young players, and that who needs these reps... guys like Hurts, Smith, Reagor, Watkins, etc.... working together, young players need those reps under 'game' conditions.

Crowd noise as opposed to silence on the practice field.  Were they making noise with the speakers, or were they busy with 'teachable' moments and had it much quieter?

A simulated unexpected change, that even the coaches would have to react to in real time?   Nah, the unexpected is just that... unexpected.  No way to really simulate authentically in real time 'unexpected' outcomes, and the way that players respond to it.   When Herbig sails the snap over the Flacco's head, he has to get ready for the next snap AND live with the consequences of that snap, not just reset the old place on the field.  And the whole team has to react and not point fingers, but just move on to the next play.

Here's the question... if the roster sucks, why not use both inter-squad and preseason games?   I am not arguing against inter-squad practices, I am in favor of them.  I am arguing against completely booting on preseason games with the young players working together that need to work together.   It's about reps... always about reps.  More reps is better.

Franchise QB looks like a franchise QB.

Do they pump in boos through the speakers for screwups?

That would hurt their feelings, so no. Gotta protect them from that too.

Why do we give a F if he has a sleeve on his non throwing arm?

Because it’s just another thing to pump him up that’s not directly related to being an actual QB.

Possibly. That was when we couldn't go to games

And then you take these lessons, and apply them in a game.

The offense does have to get a first down to continue to run plays.

You don’t get to dictate situations, you have to adapt to the game, so they need to apply in a game what you learned in practice, without the situation being dictated.

Without game reps, you are not prepared for constantly changing situations.

Leaders wear an arm sleeve.

Same reason Ben Simmons wears a shooting sleeve in a basketball game… swagzzzz
