Good breakdown on Minshew from a Colts blogger in 2020

He's got a lot of upside left, bounced around in college, could use work on footwork and mechanics, for a 6th rd pick and 2 years of control, definitely worth it.

Backup qb's are worth 2nd round picks, so a 6th round pick is a steal.

Just some random comments for people who didn't watch the game and have no intention to do so. I find myself being more annoyed at the result of the game than I probably should. It's ridiculous t

Minshew trade means Eagles are trading Hurts to Houston as part of a Watson deal very soon.

I really like this trade. 6th rounder not as valuable to us in 2022 given we have so many picks (they can't all make the roster). It doesn't stop our ability to get a QB later. Minshew is signed until 2022, so we have a cheap backup next year...who can hopefully replace Flacco.

This is a great trade.  Minshew, unlike Sudfeld, belongs in the NFL and is a QB2 candidate.   That's a very cheap price to get a very cheap backup QB.  And... it leads one to question the long-term plans with Hurts.    (I know this will upset some... sorry.)

If the team isn't sold on Hurts, but are looking to draft a young QB next year in the draft, Minshew offers you the option of having him start until the young QB is ready to be thrown in to the fire.  At the same time, Minshew shouldn't be a concern for a young, highly drafted rookie to have looking over his shoulder.

Just more gasoline for the flames.

Great move by the eagles  , I think Minshew can play and win in the NFL

Given Hurts' tendency to hold the ball, and to scamper, it does increase the likelihood of injury...  Flacco's not a young man any more...  I thought it inevitable they'd make a move at QB, given Mullens' performance...  the options were fairly limited, so this will work...

It's a 16 man PS, lot's of room to churn.

I agree.  I would merely say that they have churned with Jacquet enough.  Time to try some other guys that they don't have as much knowledge about.

First thing that came to my mind actually.

The Minshew trade is good value, but I don't entirely understand the why.

Why does a team that figures to win 4-6 games need to upgrade the 3rd qb?  I suppose they are trying to secure the 2022 backup QB since Flacco will be gone by then.

Minshew trade clearly paves the way for a Flacco trade.

Minshew makes no sense

I think its the bolded... and he's cheap... and a fairly known quantity.   Plus, the speculation about moving on from Hurts, he can be the starter or the backup for the new QB acquired.

Flacco for Watson straight up

It does if they want to keep 3 QBs.

Are you kidding?  Did you watch Joey F carve up the Jets?   Houston has to give the Eagles a conditional pick back in addition to Watson.

I think it’s about having a more mobile qb that could run more of an offense with designed qb runs.

Yeah, no...

Watson and a 5th for Flacco

Thats freakin nice. But is he here to be a 3? Or is he ahead of Flacco who has played pretty well this pre-season?

That's closer.   I was thinking a conditional 3rd.

I think it's about, collectively, all of the sensible suggestions made so far... (i.e., those not mentioning Watson)...

I think it's 3 this year, and 2 for 2022.

Just seems odd to play Hurts as little as they did and then trade for a guy to be the 3rd string QB when he isn't developmental and is only signed for one more season after this one.  Now if they can somehow re-sign him to a deal after this season when Flacco leaves and keep him as the long term backup then that will be a good move in the long run but I feel like Minshew will want to go somewhere that he can try to compete for a starting job.

I keep forgetting about that...

I guess but why not just trade for Minshew months ago instead of giving Flacco $5M? Now we have to keep all 3 on the 53. Makes more sense to me to not sign Flacco, trade for Minshew and keep your third QB on the PS.

Think the Minshew trade is simple, Jax wanted to dump Minshew b/c  they didn't want a controversy if Lawrence struggles (what they should have done was start MInshew and bring in Lawrence mid-season, but that would have taken a long view of developing a franchise QB).

Howie got him cheap, which now gives him options, he has a veteran backup he can trade, he has insurance against a QB injury, and he has a cheap backup QB for 2022.
