Can't make that assertion until the trade plays out.  Smith + whoever the Eagles take with that MIA pick.

Never understood why they do that.  If you have a big lead then your defense must be doing something right.  Keep playing that way until the offense shows they can move the ball on you.

While I agree with you, it takes one busted coverage to give up points.  If you keep it all in front of you, time off the clock is more valuable than yardage given up.

Several reasons. It runs the clock, prevents big plays that they could use to catch up and it doesn't put anything out on film that doesn't need to be in a game that's mostly wrapped up.

Sure I can.  Based on history ( Jefferson, Metcalf ) and the guy who will be making the picks, it is pretty easy to state it as fact.

That's a dumb take.  Waddle wouldn't look better than Smith in this offense.  Smith looks like he's going to be a great receiver.  The Eagles also got another first round pick out of it.  It's not like any WR on this team would be on pace for 100 catches with this QB.

The proper comparison is young QBs on losing teams. Do some research and get back to us.

No.  That's a separate argument.   This was in reference to the 'he's #7 in total yards' nonsense.

You go ahead and do the other research.  We know... he's basically a rookie, in his 4th offense in 4 years, and the OL has been shuffled around.

Except, he's not a rookie.  He's had 4 coaches in 4 years... partly because he wasn't good enough to stay at the same school and beat out a guy who can't hold down a starting job in the NFL. (so, the 4 schemes in 4 years thing is kind of on him a little bit.).  The OL has been GOOD, despite the minor shuffles.  So, stop using that as an excuse for him.   He doesn't see the whole field and runs out of the pocket too soon.

And if you'd like to build the case that he's actually better than those young QBs, go ahead.  But do it with context, not gross stats... we look forward to your analysis.  (of course, if he's on par with QBs that are disappointing, I'm not sure that's much of a feather in his cap.)   He's got a long way to go before he should be looked at as the long term solution.  He was over drafted in Round 2, and he's not exactly showing that it was a good idea to draft him.

I'm one of the quicker to hate on DeVonta and it's not like Miami has a great QB situation but I'd love to know what kind of numbers Smith would have it the Eagles had a QB that could get him the ball on a consistent basis.

We've all seen how wide open he continually is.  Yea, he had a stretch of drops there and he isn't physically imposing but the guy is just always open.

Hurts inability to see open WR, not trust the pocket and scramble is hurting the development of every pass catcher the Eagles have.

I agree with both but I guess the question is how soon do teams start playing prevent.

Maybe in alot of these cases the winning team starts playing soft,  prevent defense way too soon.

I think for awhile back in the day a lot of teams were doing it way too soon (the old joke of it prevents you from winning). I think recently teams have been better when deciding, more than likely using an analytical approach.

Waddle needs to be an All-Pro at some point in his career to warrant two 1st rounders

Smith + Miami's 1st > Waddle. It's not even a debate.

Smith has been the better WR this year, and had a cleaner injury/character history.

Teams used to play prevent in a 2 minute situation with less than a one score lead...  That was a disaster.   Now, it almost seems like the defenses in those tight games get MORE aggressive, with the thought, if we can't get them off the field quick, better to let them score quickly to get the ball back to the offense.

Have you looked at the yards? Sure Waddle has 60 catches to Smith's 38.  He has 557 yards to Smith's 538.  So Jaylen Waddle is on pace for a Zach Ertz like year except he's not even as productive as Ertz.  His yards a target are 6.6.  He ranks 110th in the League at that state vs. Smith's 29th. His longest pass play is 36 yards good for 114th in the  League this year.  He's not a better WR. He's just getting more volume in shorter passes.

Waddle isn't' even better than Smith, just look at their receiving yards even though Waddle has almost twice the receptions.

And when you factor in the extra 1st we got, there is not a single GM in NFL history who wouldn't make that trade again in hindsight.

Smith has 20 less yards on 22 less targets. The bad Hurts passes to Devonta's feet are also factored in.

Smith is better.

I guess Mike Shula would call plays?

Jalen Waddle has Greg Ward level ypr that everyone busted on Ward for this summer.

It’s due to the Dolphins not having a good QB… but I guess that’s part of Ward’s issue too

Yeah I suspect this will be a major mental hurdle for you all to leap through here.  Greg Ward played a lot with Wentz.  DeVonta has a much higher YPR than Waddle with Hurts.  Lot of conflicting narratives for you all to try to navigate here.

You can poll every single GM in the NFL whether they would want Waddle or Smith + the Fins 1st.

There is not a single GM, including Chris Grier, who would take Waddle in that choice today.
