Except Hurts has a looping motion when he throws. The second he winds up there, the LB will begin to move towards Smith. There's a chance that a laser throw from Hurts gets to Smith and let's him turn upfield, but it also puts Smith in a bad position to get rocked by the LB. Hurts decision to hold and wait was perfectly fine.

Not fine.  He has a lazy drop.  Should have planted his right foot at the 25 yard line and already have thrown the ball.  Lucky to get yards on the play.  Hurts didn't plan to hold the ball for 4 seconds as Smith runs 20 yards across the field, he got lucky the protection held as long as it did.

I want Hurts to play well because if he does the Eagles do, but this play is an example of what he needs to do to play well.  He didn't do it.  If he takes one step, plants, throws it could be a huge play.  In a close game against better teams it is a missed opportunity for a big play.  Against a mediocre team like the Eagles it looks OK.  But the play was there.  He didn't need to wait.  Waiting to throw put the play in jeopardy.  He got lucky the line held, he got lucky the ball wasn't tipped by the oncoming defender, he got lucky throwing off balance across the field that the ball was caught.

This really strips context. A WR screen is more about the play call then what Smith did. The same with Smith’s longer catch.

Those are schemed plays. Smith didn’t line up across from him and beat him. He had a lot of help.

Which routes did he toast Lattimore?

For what it’s worth, Cosell thought he shouldn’t have thrown the slant and wasn’t sure why he hesitated.

My take on the play is that Hurts reads the corners are in man, with a single high safety. The MLB is in a spy/zone. Hurts reads that LB, sees the pick work so he knows now that Smith will have Lattimore behind him, as he trails across the field. It's a great man-beater route combo. But that MLB sitting there complicates things. Hurts could try and force the slant, which brings that LB into play, and potentially puts Smith into danger. But Hurts correctly decides that Smith will be free clear of any danger as soon as crosses the LB. And he knows the LB won't go anywhere because he's spying Hurts. So he does the right thing, trusts his protection to hold up long enough for Smith to clear, and it becomes an easy pitch and catch. The slant throw is just far more dangerous in that situation.

@hputenis

This has 100% happened in my household on a Monday night before.

Nice off the field, but will kill you on it lol.

So happy we have him....he is turning out to be the next in line of great LT's for the Eagles........Tre....Peters....Jordan....and he is bigger, faster and stronger than both.  Give him a couple of years to actually learn football and just look out.

Well, couldn't disagree more.  If thrown in time the slant takes the LB completely out of the play altogether.   But we won, Hurts is playing OK, not turning the ball over, and Eagles offensive line looks great.   A lot to be happy about.

In fairness, it's also the same defense that let Hurts run 18 times for 106 yards in his first career start.  Preparation wasn't their strong suit in either game.

Other teams will be more prepared.

Undoubtedly. However, preparing for this offense is a ****. I posted yesterday about the different things we did on offense, just in the run game. To reiterate:

We ran the read-option.

We ran the read-option with a pitch man.

We ran the RPO.

We ran our IZ and OZ, traps, split zone, and power.
We ran the wildcat.

We ran a double wing.

Jet sweep.

I neglected to mention that we ran from under center and out of the gun.

And the pistol.

That's a lot to prepare for. More importantly, it doesn't take into account the quality of our OL. We just knock people off the ball. We commit to the run and you have to commit to stopping it. Believe it or not, even with 240+ yards rushing, we left yards on the field. A couple of whiffs cleaned up and we could have had nearly 300 yards rushing.

I'm dying to get to the All-22, cause I have some good stuff. On one split zone run, the NO LBs looked like the Keystone Kops.

Gotta be a little careful about using that stat. If it were tennis or golf it'd be more legit. The QB is one player of 11. The one that touches the ball most often and gets the most attention but still only 1 of 11.

Higher than that... 22 if you count the defense.  Then there's the ST players as well... and they can be a major part in the final score.

Just checked on NFL Game Pass and they don't even have this week's scores up. what a mess!

Stop it Mailata, we can't possibly love you more than we already do!!!

All true. And coaching. Coaching has played a HUGE role in our change of fortune.

Taylor having surgery isn‘t good.

And when he said no new information and he would be tight-lipped on Brooks that sounded a bit like anxiety might have reared it‘s head again..

That‘s some bad news. Both might return this season, but doesn‘t sound good.

Wait till he sings at a Super Bowl parade.

It gets better! I checked NFL Game Pass again and they have last year's game on their replay.

How low can they go?

The marginal drop from Taylor to Singleton, although measurable, is not that significant.  It's the next guy (Bradley?) that is of concern.

We now have arguably the best running OL on the planet without Brooks.  Him returning is a nice-to-have and would likely help with pass protection.  Look for him to come back after the bye.

Not sure, but Hurts is a rookie in both games.

I think Taylor was getting better every week, sad he‘s out.

He usually heals fast. Against the Saints was the 8 week mark that was suggested  average. Mix in the way Siriani spoke..

nice.  Are there any extra ingredients or is it literally just roasted brussels?

My Sister-in-law makes a corn casserole... a cross between corn bread and creamed corn... very delicious.

Savory, rather than marshmallowy sweet potatoes.
