I can’t think of any positives from today. I guess Watkins? This is looking like a team drafting top 10, and unfortunately doing so in a draft where QBs don’t look that great.

You talking just offense?  I thought the defense was a positive from today.  They weren't perfect but played well enough to win.

Looks like Wentz played 60 out of 65 snaps.  Note that the snap count reports that come out the next day are unofficial and seem to include plays nullified by penalties.

I find the curation of the Eagles website depth chart to be interesting.  Base offense is listed in 11 personnel, but they squeeze in Dallas Goedert and Ertz as the 1st string TE so as not to hurt feelings.  Ditto RDE with Sweat and Barnett.  Yet they have WR 1/2/3 in order of Smith/Reagor/Watkins as if they were a pitching staff.

Worst thing they can do is go all in or reach for a QB they don’t fully believe in. I’d rather go another year with a cheap QB they don’t fully believe in while building the team to be successful for whoever the QB is in 2023.

We'll be getting a goose egg on that front next week, I bet.

I agree completely.  But I don't know if I'll survive a year of the necessary, misleading hype that they do believe in the cheap placeholder QB, leading me to think they are totally deluded.

Why are you assuming that they wouldn't believe in the next guy?

The positive is they should have beat a team many are dubbing a super bowl contender. I feel like Sirianni was coaching not to lose instead of to win.

Because the original post I responded to alluded that the draft class could be weak at QB while we are drafting top 10. If it is indeed weak, and we are top 10, there could be a scenario where building up the rest of the roster is a better option. I wouldn’t want them to draft a QB just for the sake of it because they don’t believe in Hurts.

Even after today’s game, I’m more confident in Hurts than I was two weeks ago. I just don’t think he’s as horrible as most of you are making him out to be. He’s certainly better than 2020 Wentz.

I'm pretty sure he just stood in the pocket as a statue staring down Watkins on that play.

He got a baby step into it if anything...pressure was right in his face.

Pretty similar to week 1 with some longer shots down the field. Still nothing between the hashes

I was about to say something about the lack of tight end use. This shows that nicely. Complete failure on Sirianni

Most fans and media don't know what poor play calling actually is. There aren't some magical plays that Nick didn't call today. Execution wasn't good enough and you're dealing with a limited passer.

1st and goal on the 1… any fan can see the poor play calls in that sequence, especially the one on 4th down.

Monday night in Dallas will be very interesting.

I know there’s a lot of football to be played but I just can’t see a scenario where there’s an option to upgrade QB1 in 2022 unless it turns out to be Minshew. The only other scenario that maybe has about a 2% chance is a trade for Russell Wilson.

Please stop making the assumption that the pass always goes where Sirianni wants it to go.

If Hurts can't make the right read or is reluctant to trust what he thinks he sees, the ball will go elsewhere or he'll scramble instead.

Again, on the third down before the first field goal, we ran a three route flood to the left.  Goedert was open underneath and would have converted the first.  But for some reason, Hurts decided to throw to a covered Smith.  Incomplete.  Good play call.  Poor execution.

I expect the All-22 guys will have some more to share on this later in the week.

yup.  100%.  Even getting 3 there means something.  To come away with nil just flipped the game, even more than the blocked FG.

And even then from the Niners 3 yard line they had a chance to stuff their drive and maybe get good field position. To then give up a TD was the final nail.

Some early morning next day thoughts

Hurts - Not a great game by any stretch but not terrible either.  He had a few poor deep throws and some bad decisions but also made a number of good decisions and had two good deep balls.  Good plays with his legs as one would expect.  A mixed bag.

Play Calls - Not a great game and in particular a really bad suite of calls in the red zone series that ended with Ward throwing the ball out of the end zone.

Turnovers - No turnovers by either team for the 2nd week in a row.  I'm betting that is quite rare particularly to start a season.

OL -- Came back to earth against a tough SF DL.  Nothing to worry about though.

Overall - The lack of pts after the long pass completion was a momentum killer.  Thereafter the O produced next to nothing until the last drive.  All in all the team feels like a six win type of team to me at this point.

So a couple things i saw after re-watching the game

— on sirianni: definitely not as good of a playcalling game as compared to the Atlanta game. Especially in the red zone. I really was unimpressed with some of the calls especially after the Norman penalty in the end zone. Just run it behind your oline 4 times and you get in heck let hurts do why he does best and use his legs. I give him credit he said it himself so he acknowledged it. Heck with how the niners offense was playing i probably would’ve kicked the field goal and taken the 3 points. I’d also point out he has get the team to cut down on penalties. In the first two games they’ve committed. They had 8 today which is 6 less than week 1. However that’s 22 penalties in 2 weeks which is 11 per game. The eagles aren’t talented enough to get called for 11 penalties and win games against good teams. I tend to think there’s going to be growing pains with Sirianni as he’s a rookie head coach with a roster that imo was a 6 to 8 win roster and that’s if everyone stayed healthy. I’d also like to see him attack the intermediate part of the field. Felt like there was either the homerun or short passes.

** we had just 4 completions in the second half for 39 yards and none caught by WR. curious to see (on all 22 if the game pass allows for it) if WRs were just not getting open, missing guys open or just bad passes cause with how banged up the niners corners were felt like the eagles should’ve had more completions and production from the WR in the second half.

— Hurts: compared to week one this was a down game. Competition was much tougher even with the niners down to mediocre corners. Although he was robbed by reagor on a touchdown. However some said it last week, he has to start attacking the middle of the field. Once again it seemed they didn’t do so. He has to utilize his tight ends. They are too good to just have 4 targets in this game. I get attacking the corners cause they are suspect for the niners but goedert and ertz could’ve helped sustain drives. I did like the eagles taking more down the field chances with hurts. His passes to reagor and Watkins were good. He also had some dangerous passes one in particular was to smith (i think it was smith) that i thought probably should’ve been picked. Also had some underthrows down the field. additionally i didn’t think he did as good of a job going off his first read in this game. Something we all knew he needed to improve upon to take the next steps in his development. It’s obvious the eagles need to see him get better as the season continues going off his first read and through his progressions. If he does it bodes well for the eagles long term but if he doesn’t then the eagles are likely to look elsewhere. I think the sad reality is hurts is likely only getting this year to prove he’s the guy going forward. So he’s got 15 more games to sell Lurie, howie and sirianni that he’s it

— tight end usage: Additionally I would love to see him get the tight ends more involved because that’s a strength of our team and through the first two games there’s been a play here and there. Over two games we’ve targeted the tight end position 11 times. That’s about 5.5 targets per game. Need to involved them more because they are good enough to create mismatches and exploit defenses. Last week Hockinson had 87 yards against the LBs and S of the niners with goff at QB. I know this isn’t all goedert’s fault but one of the reasons I’m not thrilled with paying him more than Jonnu smith (likely what he gets)  is because I’ve been waiting for 4 years to see him make that big jump to the next level and yet we are still waiting for it. The next 15 games is huge for goedert imo. Maybe they get a deal done like sweat however it might benefit the eagles if they targets are inconsistent week to week to lower his price. Then again it could make him want out to go somewhere where he gets paid and utilized more.

— smith: hurts targeted him 7 times. He only came down with 2 catches. However i thought 3-4 of the other targets he really wasn’t given a great chance at pulling in the reception where good coverage or a under throwing the ball to him deep. With the amount of talent smith has i thought he could feast on the the niners corners. im betting the all 22 likey shows that smith had some plays to be had in this game I’m the intermediate routes against zone when the niners played zone and I’d say goedert too.

— reagor: reagor should’ve had a touchdown. Like year two in the nfl you cannot make that type of mistake. We knew he wasn’t as polished as other WRs in the draft coming out but that’s a killer on one of hurts best throws of the day. He gets that TD the game is completely different. Instead of a blocked field goal it’s 10-0. As much athleticism and speed as reagor has, i think the mental portion of the game and attention to details is something he really lacks. Maybe over the course of the season with coaching we see the improvement in that area but the little attention to details but on Sunday it cost him and the eagles big

— Watkins: i really love this kid. I don’t think he’s going to be a Star. He really just makes big plays. 91 yards and 26 yard receptions today. I think he’s going to get better and better. He seems very coachable and the coaches seem to know how to utilize him. Sucks he wasn’t able to get in for the td on that bomb. i loved the aggressiveness of the play calling in that situation and he did his job beating his defender.

— sanders: i know the eagles tried to get the run game going. At one point i believe they had something like 63% runs. I like sanders but i don’t love miles sanders. I think he’s a good back but he leaves a lot to be desired when he just doesn’t take what he can and tries to make bigger plays happens next winds you with 2-3 yards less than he could’e. The oline had its run blocking issues at times today as well but he sometimes exacerbates them at times. I think the biggest question going forward with the eagles and sanders is do you give him an extension after this year? I’m in the camp as of right now i wouldn’t do it. As great of a homerun threat as he can be, i don’t think he’s worth the money you are going to have to pay him. I think you can find cheaper alternatives in the draft and spend elsewhere. That can change with time but i don’t think he’s mccoy and i don’t think he’s westbrook that makes me want to pay him in what he likely believes he deserves

OL— i thought for the most part they did a good job. Gave up 2 sacks and 3 QB hits. Against that type of pass rush the niners had thats pretty good especially losing Brooks in this game and Dickerson having to step into his first game action with just a week of practice. That said i did think second half without Brooks the pocket was not as clean as when Brooks was out there. Which Brooks is an all pro guard and Dickerson playing his first nfl game action so it makes sense. i do think Hurts legs saved them a couple times, but i also thought hurts held onto the ball way too long on one of the sacks trying for something to develop.  I would’ve liked to see the run game be more effective with our backs. I have to watch the all 22 to get a better grasp on that. But it felt like we tried and tried to get the running game going (with the backs) but outside of a couple sanders run and one gainwell 6 yard run it was tough sledding. Also not all their fault. I counted at least 3 runs where sanders should’ve had 2-3 more yards but just didn’t hit the hole and take what he could get.

— hargrave: love fletcher Cox but hargrave might be the best player on this defense. He’s looked great in both games for the eagles. He had 2 tackles for loss and a QB hit. i get Cox is the one who gets a ton of attention but he’s been destroying guys out there. Speaking of Cox the eagles have got to find a way to get him to be more productive. (1 sack in last 6 games— 1 QB Hit as well). Yes he’s getting doubled and teams are keying in on him but with Graham going down we really need him to step up a little more cause you don’t know what you are getting from Kerrigan at this stage of his career, Barnett is Barnett and sweat is about to earn that extension with more snaps then he’s likely seen before

— Barnett: The dumb penalties he has had consistently from the time he was a rookie until now are ridiculous. The stupid unnecessary roughness call in that situation should warrant a benching. His selfishness in that situation was seen then and in the past. this is not the first time he’s done something stupid like that. This feels like he routinely does every season. Also I don’t know how many times he jumped offsides in his five year Career but it feels like he has at least 6-8 of those every season. Frankly i would’ve let him walk this past offseason rather than use the 5th year option. Saved the money to put towards rolling over to 2022 or on extensions for guys we want long term

— forcing turnovers: I’m hoping the defense begins creating turnovers because the next 4 games are against Cowboys, chiefs, panthers and bucs. They are going to need them to win games. Through two games the eagles defense has created 0 turnovers. This was an issue with Schwartz’s defense the past couple years. Some of this i believe is learning gannon’s system so they will eventually come. However some of this is the eagles really lack playmakers that can just take the ball away. Slay isn’t the same guy he was a couple years back. Imo Harris isn’t a playmaking safety. Don’t get me wrong the defense only gave up 17 points in this game which in today’s nfl should be good enough to win games, but if they got a turnover or two this game might have been a victory even with he offensive woes.

— job on kittle: credit to the eagles they were able to slow down kittle and make him a non factor in This game. Last year he destroyed the eagles with nick mullens and beathard throwing him the ball. Holding him to four receptions for 17 yards is a huge win for the defense.

— pass rush: needs to be better. Can’t have 2 QB hits and zero sacks against offenses like Dallas, chiefs and bucs and expect to win the next couple weeks

— wallace penalty: I kind of thought that was a BS penalty. It look like sermon lowered his helmet and Wallace went in for the tackle at the same time. I guess i understand cause helmet to helmet. But IMO if you were gonna throw a penalty on that play, I think the penalty that should’ve been called was on harris who gave sermon a forearm to the back of the helmet. That I could’ve understood giving a penalty for more than Wallace. And then then not have an explanation of what the hell was going on maybe even worse here because you were trying to figure out why the Niners still have a ball and moved up 15 yards.

— ST: blocked field goal can’t happen. If they make that field goal it’s 6-0. Maybe instead of going for it on 4th down and goal they just kick a fg and take a 9-0 lead and the game plays out differently. Also the eagles a missed opportunity to down a ball inside the five when it easily should’ve have been pinned. That said siposs has done an excellent job so far through two games. 51 yard average today and should’ve had two punts downed inside the 10

— Graham and Brooks: i feel awful for Graham. What a career he’s had. Didn’t start off great but he turned it into a stellar career and guy who’s loved by fans and teammates. Sadly an Achilles injury and his age, i think we’ve probably seen the last of the Brandon Graham we’ve come accustom too. It’s pretty amazing Graham over the past couple of years had stayed relatively healthy as he has gotten older. Unfortunately the eagles are going to miss him but see what exactly they have in sweat and Barnett. Not the right time to talk about this but 2022 with Graham could wind up looking even worse with his contract with his age and off this type of injury. Love Brooks but it might just be time to Move on from him. Which is hard cause it would have to be a post June 1 cut next year to save any big money . Unfortunately it seems his body is just breaking down. Scheduled for an MRI I’m guessing he’s likely out for a while.

People are going to catch on, eventually.

As it's been pointed out time and time again...

His completion percentage is a concern. We saw that again today.

His arm strength is a concern. We saw that again today.

His fumbling is a concern. We saw that again today.

His fear of throwing anything into the middle of the field is a concern. We saw that again today.

I know people wanted to pound their chest after he beat a highschool team last week, but it is what it is. He needs to show improvement in those areas.

Reagor had a TD. I doubt that the fact that he barely stepped out was the difference that would have allowed him to be tackled without scoring.

I do agree about the red zone. But we could have and maybe should have won in spite of that.

In the end, might be better we didnt so the staff can be more self critical and fix that issue.

Like last week running a 4th and 1 with Gainwell. We have Sanders proven to be really good. Stick with him in short yardage. I havent even watched todays game but I could tell decisions like that are going to be a regularity. Players need to execute to perfection to overcome that stuff.

Reagor showed a lack of attention to detail and did not have a TD.
