Sirianni opts to kick a field goal from within the 5 yard line and down by double digits.

Not going to read all that now, I gotta get my kid to school, but seems like a lot of conjecture by both sides.

When it would be far easier to state the obvious, that America was built on the back of slavery whether or not the founding fathers approved of slavery doesn't erase what actually happened nor does erase the role slavery had in the country after the founding fathers up until the civil war which was fought over slavery.

That isn’t right though.  The strength of our economic history was in the northeastern industrial economy and westward expansion, especially the Homestead Act but also the discovery of and exploitation of our country’s mineral wealth and the rivers and railroads to transport goods.

The old South cotton economy was built on the backs of slaves, absolutely, no doubt about it,  but that economy was wracked by the Civil War.  It was replaced in the South with sharecropping (both white and black sharecroppers), but anyone that thinks of the South as rich hasn’t been there. Hell, anyone that thinks of rural America as rich hasn’t spent time there. (The South’s wealth today is built on no income tax, air conditioning and Right to Work laws that keep wages down and unions out and thus drives manually intensive jobs south, nothing to do with slavery.). Quit reading the headlines and slogans and read the actual history.

Cotton and tobacco are debilitating crops.  Heck, Carver’s dedication to developing use for the peanut was to get his people out from under the burden of sharecropping because he understood how badly cotton depletes nitrogen from the soil and peanuts restore nitrogen to the soil. He also looked at sweet potatoes as well for the same reason. (Undersold academic in agricultural sciences, really).

Look at the droughts of the 1860s and the Panic of the 1870s followed by the 1890s.  No wealth in the South and the plains hit hard. (That plus the monopolies of the railroads helped drive the Progressive and Grange movements).

History has a tendency to be exploited by those trying to prove a point.  But delve into the depths and you tend to find much fuller answers.

Not looking forward to Vita Vea. I think he's going to feast on any of our IOL.

Why does the Roman Coliseum still stand?  Why does China still have the great wall?

Those civilizations were losers who got their arses kicked, they had slaves too

Let's say I'm a racist, homophobic, sexist idiot. I can be all that every day. But I'm still going to be smart enough not to email or even post stuff on social media that identifies me as such. I work with contractors all day long a portion of them are very racist but they are smart enough not to make record of such racism. That is other worldly dumb!!!!!

Was it NCIggle that said he only reads the first sentence of a post?  Oh boy.

I was responding to another post

George Washington owned slaves.  Should we take down his statues too?

They got a little extreme with that wall, 15-20ft is a pretty good wall, the Chinese were like "hold my beer.”

Rome New York. Someone is going to have to help me with China

The article you posted from what I read never denied that those founding fathers who were against slavery didn't own slaves nor weren't benefactors of slavery.

Seems to me the article was arguing more that British law was more to blame for slave trade in America, which would still be a contributing factor in building America, though correct me if I'm wrong as I didn't read the whole article.

I think the point is that the 1619 Project misrepresented the views of many of the Founders.

Makes sense. Gas them up and then when you play good it makes yourself look even better.

Population 32,000.  Must be a pretty crappy coliseum.

Why would you memorialize a fictional boxing hero?  The naming of things in the South and the erecting of statues from the 1890s-1920s was probably a combination of recognition to veterans of the war, a bit of rebellion because they were out from the thumb of Reconstruction and a bit of continuing to fight.  Now, when you look at the placement of the named places, some of it was probably designed to "keep” blacks down.  (The saying I heard growing up in the Deep South was "putting them in there place”.  Hopefully that doesn’t offend anyone.).  By the time my high school was named Robert E. Lee with our team named the Generals and our colors of grey and gold with a dance team in uniforms that looked like Lee, well that was pure 1960s racism and why there was a need for the Voting Rights Act.

As far as Hurts goes, I think it's proper there is in-depth debate and discussion as to his performance.  I try not to get too upset when he doesn't play well, and try not to get too amped up if he does, such as Week 1 against ATL.  He's a first-year starting QB (not a rookie) and he will have good games and bad games.  The Eagles will need to make a decision this season on where the organization is headed in 2023 and beyond, and the QB decision is central to that overall strategy.

When the Eagles decided to have Hurts start the last 4 games last season my position at the time is the organization needs to use that time to evaluate what his ceiling is.  Due to circumstances around Wentz leaving, the Eagles now have another 17 games to evaluate Hurts' ceiling again.  Howie has said before -- the goal is not 10 wins, the goal is not winning the division and having a wildcard game -- the goal is home-field advantage for the playoffs.  To accomplish that, you need a team to win 13+ games.

This brings me to an interesting question (or a few questions):

-- Will Sirianni have the power to dictate who his starting QB will be in 2023?  Lurie and Howie allowed Doug/Frank to draft Wentz in 2016 when they already had Bradford and Daniel signed and under contract.

-- Does Sirianni see enough in Hurts to tie his job security to Hurts' development?  Nick is saying the right things publicly to support Hurts, but any HC should do that.  I believe Nick's maximum job security is 2-3 years, so he has to be honest about who and what he wants running his offense -- this is his big shot in the NFL

-- Will Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and/or Deshaun Watson be available via trade after this season?  We know Howie will inquire, but how much draft capital will he be willing to give up for any of the above?  I've given my opinion before that all 3 of these QBs are in a position to dictate trade terms, and none will be willing to come here -- JMO

-- The Eagles evaluation of the 2022 QB draft class will be interesting.  Most here say it's a weak draft class which I'm inclined to agree with.  I have a bias against 6'0 and 6'1 QBs without really strong throwing arms, so I don't see a lot in Howell, Rattler, Willis, etc.  Willis is a dynamic runner with a good arm, but he runs too much for my liking.  You'd have to run a similar offense with him that they're trying to run with Hurts, and whether he could do a lot better is arguable at this point.  Ridder looks like a young Kaepernick to me; no thanks.

-- Does Hurts do enough this season that there is no available upgrade in 2022?  Possibly.  I'd rather use the draft capital to build a defense anyway.
