Another big part of the material shortages is consolidation into too few manufacturers. The union rules combine with COVID in this case. Basically, if anyone calls out claiming to be sick, union rules allow them full paid day off with no need to show any verification. Then, anyone who was in close contact is also sidelined. If the pandemic were actually over, the abuse would be less.

The workers who are there being able to work longer hours could help to mitigate some of the backlog, but union rules forbid it. I'm not suggesting that workers be forced to work longer hours, but they can't even be paid more to do so if they want to. Sure, those rules were put in place to protect the workers, but they were also put in place during completely different conditions.

October 12, 20213 yr At risk of seeming to support more government spending, this is one place that we could really use more infrastructure spending. Our ports are woefully antiquated and lacking capacity. Full disclosure, my biggest customer supplies some of the drives for the cranes to the ports, and they buy really big, expensive transformers from me for those drives, so my support of this particular type of government spending is also my support of big commission checks in my bank account.

It's stuck on cargo ships. If all these places came back like they claim it wouldn't be an issue but, yet here we are and people are still.claiming he brought everyone back for manufacturing... Wouldn't matter even the American industries can't get enough workers to get the stuff shipped out. If you are having turkey for Thanksgiving I suggest you buy it right now. We haven't been able to get a single turkey in our stores and no word on anytime soon either. People are still getting regular unemployment. They come in work a week or 2 to satisfy unemployment that they " tried" then quit and go back on it for another month. It's going to be a horrible holiday season.

October 13, 20213 yr The NEWS says the California port situation is caused by a driver shortage. Not so fast: It is in part caused by a California Truck Ban which says all trucks must be 2011 or newer and a law called AB 5 which prohibits Owner Operators. Traditionally the ports have been served by Owner Operators (non union). California has now banned Owner Operators. Long term, truckers in California are not investing in new trucks because California has a law that makes them illegal in 2035. The requirement is to purchase electric trucks which do not exist. And in the words of Paul Harvey, "Now you know the rest of the story” BUSINESS CARB to begin blocking certain trucks’ DMV registrations in 2020 Carriers domiciled in California with trucks older than 2011 model, or using engines manufactured before 2010, will need to meet the Board’s new Truck and Bus Regulation beginning in 2020 or their vehicles will be blocked from registration with the state’s DMV, the state has said. The new "health-based requirements” will need to be met before a driver is allowed to register his or her truck through the Department of Motor Vehicles, CARB says. A new enforcement tool used by the DMV beginning in 2020 will automatically block 2010 and older trucks from registration

Amazed they were able to get the laborers to agree to this. https://www.pe.com/2021/10/13/biden-to-announce-that-ports-of-la-long-beach-will-begin-24-hour-operation/ Quote LOS ANGELES — President Joe Biden is expected to announce that the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles will begin operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, a push from the White House to clear supply chain disruptions that are threatening holiday shopping season plans and slowing the nation’s economic recovery from the pandemic, according to media reports. Biden is scheduled to make the announcement Wednesday. The two ports are responsible for nearly half of all imports into the United States. Under the proposed plan, the ports will nearly double the number of hours that cargo is transferred from container ships offshore to delivery trucks on the nation’s highways. The crews will work through the night. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union members will fill the extra shifts. Major shippers and retailers, including Walmart, FedEx, UPS, Samsung, Home Depot and Target, have agreed to speed up operations to clear cargo out of the ports and free up more space on the docks, the L.A. Times reports. The goal is to process and unload 3,500 extra containers during the night each week. Biden’s announcement is scheduled to be made during a virtual conference that includes industry executives such as Los Angeles Port executive director Gene Seroka and Long Beach Port executive director Mario Cordero. Cargo ships have been anchored offshore from the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles for weeks. There were 58 container ships reported offshore as of Tuesday morning. That is down from a reported peak of 73 container ships offshore two weeks ago. Biden launched a Supply Chain Disruption Task Force in June to focus on transportation and logistic bottlenecks to the U.S. economic recovery. Port Envoy John Porcari was appointed in August to help drive coordination between private firms that control the transportation and logistics supply chain. The Biden administration is convening business leaders, port leaders and union leaders Wednesday to discuss the challenges at ports, including Los Angeles and Long Beach, across the country. Biden will meet with the leadership from the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles to discuss the actions they are taking to address the supply chain challenges in Southern California. The Long Beach and Los Angeles ports are the point of entry for 40% of containers to the U.S., and are on track to reach new highs in container traffic this year, according to a release from the White House. Through August, Los Angeles has moved 30% more and Long Beach over 20% more containers for U.S. exporters. The commitments being announced Wednesday include: — Walmart committing to increase its use of nighttime hours and increase throughput by as much as 50% over the next several weeks — UPS committing to an increased use of 24/7 operations and enhanced data sharing with the ports, which would allow it to move up to 20% more containers from the ports — FedEx committing to work to combine an increase in nighttime hours with changes to trucking and rail use to increase the volume of containers it will move from the ports. The changes could result in doubling the volume of cargo moved out of the ports at night. — Samsung committing to move nearly 60% more containers out of the ports by operating 24/7 through the next 90 days — The Home Depot committing to move up to 10% additional containers per week during newly available off-peak hours at the Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles — Target, moving about 50% of its containers at night, committing to increase that amount by 10% during the next 90 days to help ease congestion at the ports

Well, yeah, everything i said there. i'm not going to back and look for it but somewhre in there I also said this is a correction phase. We are dealing with inflation that was artificially subdued for over a decade. We need this correction, even if the combination of it along with supply issues stemming from the pandemic is going to kick us in the teeth for a while. It WILL stabilize, in the short to mid 2-5 years. Yup, i'm good with all of the above. But go ahead and keep running around like a headless chicken if you want to panic.
