October 8, 20214 yr Classic lowest common denominator leftist sheet I encountered when I first came to Sweden back in the mid-80s.
October 8, 20214 yr Not much choice left but either move out of NY or home school your kids for academic development. The curriculum will be exponentially more challenging than what's given to the drone population. Then, have your kids join extra curricular activities (clubs, sports, whatever) for social development.

Luckily my niece transferred to one of the few private schools that is rejecting all the BS.

A lot of private schools will give scholarships and tuition aid to high achievers. I know my old private HS is more expensive than most universities, but if you’re gifted in any way — academics, athletics, some niche area like music or art, a strong combination of two or more traits, whatever — they’ll work with you, get you in the school, and make it affordable. It’s in their interest. No different than colleges giving scholarships to athletes and kids with perfect SATs. At that level money becomes less of an issue. You become part of their prestige. I don’t think the issue is for the truly gifted, the geniuses, etc — those kids are identified pretty early and most people involved in the education system will go out of their way to make sure someone of that caliber has the opportunity to fulfill their potential. These same kids tend to take to academics well because they’re naturally good at it, and kids tend to do what they’re good at because of positive reenforcement. So it usually works out reasonably well for them in the end. Even a kid in a really poor area will get all their teachers pulling for them as "the one who got out” and universities actively seek them out to avoid a revolving door of upper middle and upper class students. I believe the real issue is for the above average to differentiate themselves from the average. The kind of kids who could get lost in the weeds. Put them in a good environment and they flourish, put them in a bad environment and the outcome is indistinguishable from the masses of other kids. Thats where the marginal impact of schools can make a difference on both a small and large scale in my opinion.

October 9, 20214 yr I have no problem with defunding gifted and talented if the alternative is eliminating stuff like language classes or health classes.

I mean, I want language and health classes too but if the choices are French or calculus it's a no-brainer. Understimulating smart kids can be really detrimental. Lots of kids I see where parents and teachers are looking for ADHD diagnoses end up mostly being bright kids forced to learn at too slow a pace. Hard to learn how to learn when there's no challenge.

October 9, 20214 yr By the way public schools have been eliminating gifted and talented programs for years. There’s only so much in the pot for these kinds of classes.

So public schools won’t have gifted student classes for students who excel in the regular classes? What’s the reason for this? it’s been a long time but I remember the kids in public schools, including the gifted ones, were mostly poor. Rich and upper middle class kids went to private schools. so how does this help poor kids who want want to achieve more in life again?

When I started teaching at my high school (22 years ago), we offered 4 AP classes. We now offer 20 AP classes and 10 additional College in the High School classes with cooperative agreements with colleges to award credit. There is no doubt that schools are offering more AP classes than ever.

We've actually been trying to beef up the gifted program at my high school in the last couple of years, but we're doing it on a shoestring budget... I took over the HS gifted program in summer of 2019, and for the first time in 25-30 years we actually have specially offered enrichment courses- we run 1 course with 2 sections each semester. I submitted my budget figure for resources for the courses this year, and my budget was cut before the building budget was finalized. It went from a whopping $1000 and got cut down to $750.
October 9, 20214 yr Right wing nut bags like Kkz: the left are an elite group of supreme racists (left ends racist gifted program that only leads to segregation and success for the elitist, giving EVERY student equal opportunity regardless of race) right wing nut bags like Kkz: this is racist

Yet another reason to make public universities free.
