If there are silver linings from this war, they are:

~ That the United Nations is worthless. Lots of condemning, which is correct to do, but the people in the UN condemning the invasion haven't done much more than me. And Russia controls the gavel with the UN Security Counsel, so they get the last word. How nice.

~ That the strawman of calling people you don't like NSDAPs is worthless as well. Putin says that the Ukrainians are Neonazis. So does that mean all of us here in the US "support Neonazis"? It seems pretty binary between proclaiming support, or admitting that it's a strawman.

 

There are probably a couple other silver linings as well, but these seem nakedly obvious.

my read, and it's totally speculative, is that they were trying to get some of these stragglers on board with tougher sanctions. hence the delay in speaking.

they went with what they had and Biden tried selling it. he's not a salesman, and you could even tell watching it that he knew it was less than what was needed. 

they've had another day to both read the reactions and to continue negotiating, and this is now what they've agreed positively to on day 2. more may come, but may require further negotiating.I think too many nations (mostly Germany) had convinced themselves that there's no way Putin would actually invade Ukraine and were caught flat-footed.
