Kyiv says it shoots down volley of Russian hypersonic missiles

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/air-defence-systems-repelling-attacks-ukraine-early-tuesday-officials-2023-05-16/

Quote

Ukraine said on Tuesday it had shot down six Russian hypersonic Kinzhal missiles in a single night, thwarting a superweapon Moscow had previously touted as all but unstoppable.

It was the first time Ukraine had claimed to have struck an entire volley of multiple hypersonic missiles, and if confirmed would be a demonstration of the effectiveness of newly deployed Western air defences.

Eat a bag of Ds, you pravda sucking scum!!!

Here's the reality, Schutzstaffel.

The Russians fire decoy missiles to get the AD to engage. That engagement causes the location to light up like a Christmas tree. Actual hypersonics then come in and take out the target. That's the way it works.

Uh, the system is still operational. The Patriot system is modular, with various components spread out to help prevent one hit from taking out the whole system. The most exposed, and most likely, system to get hit is the radar unit - which is replaceable. And given that reports indicate it's still operational I would bet one of the various launchers sustained some damage.

U.S. officials confirm damage to a Patriot air defense system in the attack but say it remains operational

Ukraine’s air defense intercepted six hypersonic Kinzhal missiles fired by Russia early Tuesday, several Ukrainian officials and one American official said. The strikes are further evidence of Ukraine’s ability to shoot down one of the most sophisticated conventional weapons in Moscow’s arsenal.

In one of the largest aerial assaults since early March, Russia also launched nine Kalibr cruise missiles from ships in the Black Sea, three short-range ballistic missiles from land and a number of drones, according to the commander in chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces. All of the drones and missiles were shot down, the military said.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said that at least one Kinzhal was used in the attack on Tuesday and claimed that a Kinzhal had hit a Patriot air defense system. Two U.S. officials confirmed that a Patriot system had been damaged in the attack but added that the Patriot remained operational against all threats.

So Russia claims 1 Kinzhal and it hit the patriot battery  and the US claims six were launched and intercepted.

Regardless, the total amount of damage compared with the cost to Russia is very lopsided. The West is more than capable of absorbing even the expensive Patriot system to help defend Ukraine from the invaders. On the other hand, every Kinzhal missile that Russia loses represents a disproportionately high cost to their dwindling ability to produce equipment.

Wars are won mostly on logistics. The side that runs out of bullets first will lose. With the West brazenly providing almost endless material support to Ukraine, Russia will run out of equipment sooner than it will run out of men - even as it runs them into meatgrinders.

So the side stripped bare by oligarchs might not have an advantage?

US officials say damage to Patriot missile defense system was minimal following Russian attack near Kyiv

The damage to a Patriot air defense system following a Russian missile attack near Kyiv on Tuesday morning is minimal, three US officials tell CNN, with one official describing it as "minor” damage.

The US sent inspectors to examine the system on Tuesday after being told by Ukrainian forces that the system appeared to have been damaged, one official said.

The system itself is still operational, the officials said, and the radar component of the Patriot, one of its most important elements, was not damaged. US officials do not believe the Patriot will need to be removed from the battlefield for repairs.

A complete Patriot battery has six major components: generators, a radar set, a control station, antennas, a launcher station and interceptor missiles. The components operate together to fire a Patriot missile and successfully guide it to its target.

Sorry Vatniks, you'll have to cheer for Russian terrorism another day.

Imagine having to celebrate just getting a hit on an air defense system… a full year and three months into an invasion of a country… who by all thoughts and consensus… had a FAR inferior military… who was supposed to be steamrolled in a matter of weeks… a full year and three months later… celebrating just getting a hit in.

Russia is pathetic… but not as pathetic as those who still believe they have any semblance of superiority in anything whatsoever.

How far they have fallen, but we haven’t seen their bottom yet.

You haven't, but I'm willing to bet @Arthur Jackson has.

if they took out the Patriot battery protecting Kyiv you'd think they'd keep targeting it. I guess they know they didn't.....

Russia says hypersonic missile scientists face 'very serious' treason accusations

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/kremlin-says-three-scientists-face-very-serious-accusations-treason-case-2023-05-17/

Abra's superweapon.

The open letter from their colleagues at ITAM - the Khristianovich Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in Novosibirsk - said the materials the scientists had presented in international forums had been checked repeatedly to ensure they did not include restricted information.

The cases showed that "any article or report can lead to accusations of high treason", the open letter said.

"In this situation, we are not only afraid for the fate of our colleagues. We just do not understand how to continue to do our job."

...

It said such cases were having a chilling effect on young Russian scientists.

"Even now, the best students refuse to come to work with us, and our best young employees are leaving science. A number of research areas that are critically important to laying the fundamental groundwork for the aerospace technology of the future are simply closing because employees are afraid to engage in such research."

Yeah, jee whiz I wonder why all the young and talented people fled Russia already... 🤔

Jeeze it’s almost like these hypersonic missiles lauded for years by foreign affairs journalists lacking in real world experience actually aren’t that good.

Who would have thought.

They are very fast but can't maneuver, only adjust course slightly. From what I've read they don't even really fit the definition of a hypersonic missile because they lack maneuverability.

Making a missile that goes mach 10 is an achievement, but not a huge leap forward without better handling.

wasnt the fear in here that Russia could attach a nuclear warhead to one of these unstoppable hypersonic missiles and get through our air defenses? That doesnt really seem possible at this point does it? Are we still afraid of their Nukes? It seems like no coincidence that now the UK is willing to start sending them longer range weapons, better fighter jets, etc. Maybe countries are realizing they dont need to be scared of russia escalating.

They have ICBMs do they not? A nuclear warhead could be put in a Kinzhal but I'd expect it to be a smaller warhead.

Not sure if intercepting a Khinzal with a tactical nuke would cause detonation of the nuke itself or not. If it would, it might be worse depending on where it's intercepted.

Who would have thought.

So Russian missile = premature ejactulation?

In which case, when they hit SOMETHING, I now understand the celebration from the incels.

Damage control is in high gear. Emergency meetings all over NATO, apparently.

According to reports, there were two PS attacked by the Russians. One was completely destroyed and the other damaged.

At least 30 missiles were fired by the PS with no intercepts. NONE! Just look at the video, you'll see not one explosion in the air. Given that this was the most sophisticated PS NATO deploys, that's shocking. What you will see is two explosions on the ground where the PS are located.

This is sending shockwaves across Europe.  The U.S. produces about 300 of these missiles per year. Do the math.

Keep in mind, Fascists, the Kinzhal isn't even the best the Russians have to offer. The Zircon and Avantgard, not to mention Sarmat, haven't even been dusted off yet.
