Makes sense. Might try the t200 or t250 if you want a familiar feel. I played ap2s forever

I switched to ping tow seasons ago. Not getting any younger…the 530s are excellent so may want to test the new 540s. The blueprint are just too damn hard to hit

I always prefer kbs shafts and they have lots of options for weight and kickpoint

Never got along with ping. Usually a titleist guy. Exploring Taylormade p790

Thats me an callaway lol

Watch those 790s they are hot but they dont have the spin to hold fast greens in my experience

I have plenty of spin so them being lower spin is actually good for me. The stronger loft and hotter face will be an adjustment for sure

Just a thought. Test the mizuno JPX line. They are money and sound like what you are looking for

I’ve heard. A buddy of mine had them and switched to the p790s (2024 version). But Mizuno has come along way with golf equipment so your suggestion is noted

Yeah not so much about the brand of shaft just the weight, flex and profile. I’m a high launch and spin player and it’s killing distance. So I’m testing a bunch of options to get those numbers down. But also working on mechanics so that I don’t need as much fix from a shaft if that makes sense. I have my driver, woods, hybrid and wedges dialed in so good right now but the irons aren’t a fit any more. Got them 8 years ago when I needed the help, but now I need more performance.

Sounds a bit like me. I also had a high flight and tons of spin and I played around 10 hcp for years with 8 being my lowest. Now I’m starting down the old man path and can’t generate club head speed and can’t get any of the long irons in the air. My irons are 8 year old Srixon with their std stiff steel shaft for the model. I need to make a change soon and get something with some more bend. I’m still hanging on playing to a 12 or 13 and cheat a bit by lifting my left heel in the backswing to add turn but it is a struggle. Don’t like hybrids and tinkering with an old seven wood and might buy a new one.

It will be interesting to hear how it goes for you to make a change. I change other clubs but my irons and putter are not things I change often. Just a couple iron sets and a couple putters since 1990 when I started playing in earnest.

I bought a TaylorMade MG4 58° yesterday.

7 woods can be great for people, i just prefer my hybrids.

8 years is a long time for irons. I tend to change every three or so. Vokeys two seasons at most

Ping is here in a few weeks. Going to test a driver

Probably too much loft unless you are a single digit index

I was thinking the same. I don’t even put my 60 in the bag these days until mid summer when the grass is perfect and even then I’ll only rarely use it with the perfect lie and distance for me to get a simple flop shot over a trap or something. Way too risky otherwise even though chipping is the best part of my game. I used it more often years back when I was a single and could make use of it even with low spinning chips. 56 or 52 is plenty and maybe less for a higher handicapper.

Irons tend to be the clubs where the tech changes the slowest far as I’m aware.

I wouldnt say thats true anymore. The last 4 years have seen another leap forward. Shafts dont change much bc they cant really. But head weight and distribution would help you a ton, i think if you are losing speed

Fair enough. First round is Monday. I’ll play a couple of weeks and then go to our pro and discuss it with him. I was in denial early last year and then discovered I could gain turn and speed by lifting my left foot in the backswing but that’s only going to be a temporary fix

Yeah and it can introduce another variable/degree of freedom. Ask the pro to measure hip turn v shoulder turn. Will be informative.

Ive been on my grind since last Oct. down 20 pounds and gained speed but having to rework the swing a bit as i have always been hypermobile. I can get way too long in the backswing

I have a 54° that is part of my irons set (SW) so I wanted something that gives me shorter distances with more spin. going with another 54° (even though the flight off the club would be different with a wedge) seemed redundant, and a 56° did not seem like enough of a gap

You can hit partial length pitches with tons of spin with your 54.

True but 2 degrees isnt enough of a gap he is right. Drpends on his angle of attack, dynamic loft etc

Yes but 54 may likely be enough or maybe he’s playing more these days and has a need for more.
