May 7, 20205 yr He's got a chance. Hopefully having some speed on the field will open things up a bit for him.

And then you take that "excuse" and you turn it into a lack of resiliency of the guy. And these guys think they're so tough-minded because they do that.
May 8, 20205 yr we didn't draft 87 gazillion receivers because we expected that numnutz to be any good. If he somehow became serviceable it would be the biggest improvement I have ever seen from a w.r.
May 8, 20205 yr Let's just say this, I'd be pleasantly surprised if this kid contributes anything of value to this team...but I'm not holding out any hope.
May 9, 20205 yr I do not believe he will be good. He never stood out. He doesn’t seem like the direction the Eagles want to go anymore. They have Wentz to a speed movement. He’s like a tortoise compared to the rest of these guys. His only hope is to go out there and catch everything thrown his way.

JJ has to make the team first and then see if he can get playing time or is at least good at special teams.
June 12, 20205 yr It's a pretty good sign that he was part of the group working out with Wentz, as hopefully they can establish a rhythm together. Last year was somewhat of a mess with Jeffery, Agholor and DJax taking a lot of first team reps, and then all those guys getting hurt/underperforming. This year there won't be that problem. I would imagine that DJax and Goodwin won't see many reps during the preseason, so Reagor, JJ and Ward will probably get the majority of the work with the first team. I like the fact that Ward is going to be pushing those guys, as he has had to outwork everyone to get where he is, so he sets a nice example for his teammates. Obviously JJ is never going to be a guy who beats opposing corners with speed, but rather a guy that a qb has to trust will make a play. So I think some patience is needed so that he can build a relationship with Wentz. It's easy to look at this guy and think he is a bust, but I think he's the kind of guy that opposing cbs find impossible to cover once he finds his groove and starts getting looks with back shoulder throws and other routes that take advantage of his size.
June 12, 20205 yr JJAW does not have a niche area to be his. Jeffrey and him are similar. With Jeffrey hurt last season, JJAW did not make much of an impact, worse was showing all his shortcomings. That is a very bad showing. The coming season with Jeffrey is still unavailable, it would be JJ's last chance to show something and change coach's mind about him. For his own sake, better gets his head right and works hard to improve and impress.
June 12, 20205 yr Realistic best-case scenario for Whiteside is that he becomes a threat in the red-zone with his frame, because I don't see him being a high volume guy with all of the new WRs on the roster. His only "advantage" is his 6'2, 225 lb frame. Maybe he finds new life as an undersized TE, serving as the TE3 behind Ertz and Goedert? I'm only being half-serious with that comment, but I wouldn't be surprised if the coaches give it a shot.

Ertz and Goedert play different positions when they are on the field together. Goedert is a tight end and Ertz is generally either an H-back or an X receiver. It is certainly not a leap to think that JJ could fill the Ertz role in this offense, and realistically he could be really good at it.
June 12, 20205 yr I don't expect any speed, athleticism, separation or much of anything out of JJAW. If he can somehow become like a Jason Avant, great hands move the chains type of guy, I'll consider that a win.
June 12, 20205 yr Metcalf would not have been good on this team because our WR coach last year was a value-subtract. I think he'll be much better this year, which is to say, pretty good.
June 12, 20205 yr His injured foot was worse than it appeared, according to some reports, but he didn't want to use it as an excuse. I give him a little more time before saying he is a bona fide bust.

The fact he played through it kind of shows he's got some grit even if he does end up lacking the ability.

There were some reports saying teams were trying to trade for him after the preseason performance he put up. Also he said his foot injury was so bad teammates and such would have to help him to the bathroom. He said on a radio show that he didn't realize how much of a grind it was in the NFL and the injuries and trying to keep up with the speed of the game really got to him. He said if he was Wentz he wouldn't of thrown him the ball either. So it seems he at least gets what is happening around him and needs to adjust
June 13, 20205 yr He will be a nice player if hes in the correct scheme that uses him to his strengths. Jump balls, mid/deep posts, mid digs, corners, deep outs is what he will show his success. Sadly under Doug we do not have the right fit for him. he will never be that drag, slant, screen type of player which is a large majority of Doug's style. I don't see Doug changing his offense to have Whiteside have success. Ive said it a lot that I dont buy into Doug's system. 2017 was more Frank's scheme and we had tons of success. I just hope Doug looks back and uses all 100 of these new offensive coaches the FO brought in for him and changes in mind set that he needs to be the guy running this offense.

Be Jason Avant and a red zone 3rd option behind the TEs and I will be cool. It sucks to settle, but I will take any contribution over none

He'd have to show pretty bad this preseason and this year's draft picks show pretty good for him to not make the team I think. I hope they don't keep him around like they did Agholor though.
June 13, 20205 yr My expectations for JJAW are so low that I would consider him a success if he winds up being an above average RZ target.

I guess that sort of just goes to further the point of how well he performed during the preseason doesn't it. I mean he did look really freaking good. I know it wasn't necessarily against top players and sometimes not even NFL starters but still.
June 14, 20205 yr Here's a pretty good write up on him. https://www.phillyvoice.com/eagles-new-player-or-current-player-new-role-series-jj-arcega-whiteside-edition/ I would note is that, in the preseason highlights, he took almost all his snaps in the x position, with only one in the slot. But in the regular season, most of his snaps were either as a slot or z receiver. He also made most of his catches in the preseason on dig routes, and in the regular season highlights he barely ran any of them, and if he did it was from the slot. To me, this is all on the coaches. How can the the staff watch a kid make all kinds of plays in the preseason and then use him in a totally different way in the regular season? Even worse, why put a guy in the slot when you had a really good slot receiver in Ward on the practice squad? Incompetence. Blaming JJ for his rookie season is ridiculous. This one is on the coaches.
June 16, 20205 yr This was from this morning's press conference with Pederson. Hopefully this is the Eagles learning from their mistake with JJAW.
