If Howie were a lame duck GM he'd be more prone to making a splash move to try and save his job. See Pace and the Bears last season trading up for Fields.  Actual long term thinking and planning is to fill out the rest of the roster, especially the defense with some young building blocks.

But keep on with those mental gymnastics people.  I'm sure the denial that Hurts is the QB will persist until kickoff of week 1.

Having the capital and then actually drafting good players is two different things. Howie has more bad than good in this area. They need to push assets to next year for a QB. Really feel like they missed the boat on young quality safeties this FA period, for whatever reason. That's already a strike against him one day into his new deal. I expect more of the same the next three years, maybe we sneak into the playoffs once like last year, and that's a big maybe. But we will get eliminated pretty easily even if we do.

They're rebuilding. They've been explicit about this. This was not the year to make a big splash in FA even if he had the cap room to do so.

They've accumulated draft capital, brought in a HC who is development oriented, and they're sticking with the plan.

Hmmm ..... for the folks who don't think the fishbowl that is the Philly media has anything to do with why a high-profile QB wouldn't see the Eagles as the most preferred trade destination.

I’d add it’s not like the eagles have done a good job helping themselves with leaked stories always coming out.  How many times does somebody leave the organization and a leaked story throwing them under the bus occurs? I brought this up last year with a list of times this has happened. This started more and more near the end of the reid era.

Didn't Howie say they are not rebuilding?

I wonder how the loss of Cunningham and Brown is impacting the Eagles in free agency. While the scouts are the same, the decision makers and compilers are gone and not yet replaced. (Unclear on who might be interviewing for front office positions at this point.). Food for thought.

I don't think anyone here wanted big splashes, we all see they are rebuilding. But rebuilding means adding quality younger players to build upon. They added one. This defense flat out stinks. They need so much on that side of  the ball alone. Doing nothing is not making it better. I don't understand the building process they are attempting here.

when he says he's planing to build up the team it means rebuilding though the draft.

A well run organization with an Elite GM shouldn't skip a beat because of the "timing".  Again, Howie should support it.  It's job security for him.  He obviously didn't care about timing, if he's negotiating a new deal as free agency/tampering period is upon us.

Why do Corporations have "non-compete" clauses for senior personnel (it's abused, but for top guys it's justified) - because you don't want them taking the knowledge of your company to a competitor. Same with hiring guys before the draft - you're not just hiring the person, you're hiring their knowledge, which includes all the work invested in evaluating prospects and your draft strategy.

Lol. Either baker is going to play with a chip on his shoulder or he’s going to maneuver his way out of there. I’m guessing he goes with the I’m out of here option.

This is a two way street though. They reported to Howie. So he knows who they are potentially high on. Howie doesn't report to them, so there's a good chance Brown and Cunningham either don't know or have limited knowledge what exactly his plan is for FA or the draft.

And I'd imagine they just promote within and push Raiche higher up the ladder.

I don't know if childish is appropriate.  At some point, I would think these types of non-compete rules run the risk violation of Anti-trust laws.

What they are trying to do isn't uncommon in other industries.  I have worked with executives that, after taking a new role at a competitor, had to take garden leave.  Which is basically stay away for six months so that anything you know now becomes less relevant when you start at your new company.

The Eagles have every right to protect their proprietary knowledge and internal planning.

EDIT:  They were actually paid by the current employer to do nothing during the garden leave.  That's how important protecting the information is.

I agree.

The league just needs to work out the timing.  No one wants to inhibit the opportunity for advancement.  Just the process.

And your criticisms continue to be ridiculous and only expose you as someone who cannot understand things past a superficial level.  There's a reason that most teams are following the Eagles lead when it comes to contract structuring but of course you are smarter than the dozens of people NFL teams collectively employ to maximize the cap.  Cap space rolls over and because cap continues to increase, a cap dollar today is worth more than a cap dollar tomorrow.  Like if you have a mortgage of $500k and the bank says to you that you can either pay all $500k today or five years from now you can also pay $500k - no interest.  I hope you can understand why everyone would take the latter option and perhaps with a few more lessons you will be to apply these simple economic concepts to the NFL salary cap.

There's a reason that the Eagles have the most DEAD CAP SPACE in the entire league and the LEAST FLEXIBILITY.  Nothing superficial about that brother.  Simple economic concept for you.

Jimmy, Joey and Johnny each are given $10 to spend.   Jimmy owes $2 to Sarah.  Joey owes $1 to Sally.  Johnny owes $0 to anyone.

Jimmy, Joey and Johnny all want the same toy at the auction.   Jimmy bids $8.  Joey bids $9.  Johnny bids $10.   Johnny wins the bid and gets the toy.

Now, do you want to discuss the fact that the reason Jimmy owes $2 already is because he bought a broken toy that he was never able to play with, but thought he'd really like because in previous years, it was a really fun toy.  But, just isn't the same anymore.

I’ve been of the belief since the day he was drafted that he wasn’t worth where he was getting drafted and I didn’t think he was all that. So I wouldn’t trade for him anyways. But the fact that he didn’t play very well last year, comes off like a pain in the bass and he’s coming off a bad injury that required surgery the value was already not great. Add on this situation, it’s plummeted even more.

Browns are likely going to be back to the QB situation they had prior to baker if they trade him. but a roster that’s better now then at that time so they aren’t going to be picking high enough to get the QB they truly covet.

It's called "the draft." Not just landing 3 or 4 starters, but a half dozen solid backups who provide depth at low cost.

Last year 3 starters in Smith, Dickerson and Williams, but also McPhearson, Gainwell and Stoll. The others, remains to be seen, along with all the players he picked up such as Anderson, Chachere, Vincent, Awosika, Gowan, McCain, T Jackson and Minshew.

A lot of improvement every year comes from the guys on the PS or the back of the roster who make jumps their 2nd or 3rd season.

Guys from the 2020 off season who started games last year:  Hurts, Reagor, Watkins, Driscoll, Taylor, Wallace, Opeta, Epps.

You build a foundation, then add a few FAs as the roof, add the roof before finishing the foundation and the building tends to collapse.
