Harris and Scott are not exciting.  The problem I have is the optics and timing.  I think it's a safe bet that teams weren't beating down doors trying to sign either of them.  To announce those signings on the same day of the Watson trade just looks silly IMO. Easily could have waited a day or a week to announce these guys.  I hope neither of them make the opening day roster.

What does the Watson trade have to do with them doing maintenance signings?

With good free agent safeties gone, other than Mathieu, I wonder if there are any good conversions to be made.

I wonder if Kary Vincent can do it this year. I wonder if Patrick Peterson is ready to move to safety yet? Physical CBs in this draft like Taylor-Britt, Alontae Taylor, and Josh Thompson.

I wish we had waited out the market to see if we could get a better back for that price.

What good RBs on the market?

How long before we see Singleton brought back...

For all the hype, the Howie is still keeping an eye on things, look out for the Eagles to be a surprise team and such, plus the fact that another team just got better.  They aren't directly related at all. I'm just saying it's annoying.  I didn't want Watson, I'm thrilled they didn't make that trade.  I also didn't want either of these two guys back.

Greg Ward and Boston Scott are the same player in my eyes

Sure.  Cheap boring mediocre at best vets that know the offense who can fill the back end of the roster. Now if Ward becomes our WR1 again then yeah that's a big problem. But neither signing should affect their approach to free agency or the draft really so hopefully that's not a problem.

Senate?

There will always be Greg Wards and Boston Scotts on the roster. As long as they aren't more than RB3/WR4 on the depth chart and play STs there isn't much to be upset about.

No offense but I hate this mentality. IF they are just RB3/WR4,5/ST’s guys and they have been around for 3+ years, then you know who they are and what they bring. Why not take a shot on a different RB3/WR4 or 5 guys and see if you can get lucky and get someone that exceeds expectations. It’s such a low floor there’s barely a risk in trying someone else.

This.  Every team (maybe outside of the AFCW) has Scotts and Wards on their roster.  As long as they are RB3 and WR4/5, that's OK.

Where we are needy is in the top-20 players on the roster.

Sure. There is room for Scott/Ward and other RB3/WR4 guys on the 90-man roster.  Let them battle it out there.  This way you at least know your floor.

Gordon, Fournette, Jones, Patterson, Mack, D Williams, Penny, Michel.

Some of them (Gordon and Fournette and Patterson) weren’t going to sign that cheap, but I’d rather wait out the market.

Disagree on the low floor being that low. Scott in particular has been a competent spot starter for us in games where the top guys are injured. I also don't see how Scott prevents you from exploring those high upside guys in the draft. For example I have no problem pairing a reliable mediocre floor low ceiling guy like Scott with guys like Gainwell and Huntley like they did this year. Best case scenario they beat him out, worst case you have an RB3 who won't lose a game for you/force you to totally change game plan for.

Cap isn't an issue, guys. We want Ward, Harris and Boston Scott.

Scotts not going anywhere. They gave him basically the same amount as the tender and guaranteed almost $2M of it. If he was just a 90 man, battle it out guy they would have just tendered him which is all un-guaranteed.

He wasn't a stud LB but he had a good story and seemed like a good guy with all the crap he did with his sister. I hope he has success in Denver.

No good. That means we may still bring Singleton back.

He will. To us.

Wrong.  He can throw a forward pass.  His issues are quickness to read, interpreting and trusting what he is seeing and pulling the trigger timely.  Accuracy is hard to gage as we don’t know if it is Reagor, JJAW, Watkins or Hurts.  I suspect some of both.  And our top graded TE?   He drops too many.   We also have pocket understanding and trust issues and trusting his feet more than his reads or OL.  But he can throw a forward pass.  Question is can he fix his mechanics, improve his reading to a pro level, time his throws better, learn to trust the pocket better and use the whole field.  Yeah, I have my doubts about this.

That’s the issue with the QBs in this draft.  Are any surefire skilled players are reading?  Probably the best of those is Coan. Like Minshew, he doesn’t have a good long ball. He also has five years of experience.   Next best is a toss up between Corral and Pickett. Neither have superior arm strength. Corral has struggled with protecting the ball a bit.  Neither can hold a candle to Hurts as a runner.   Strong?  Big arm, statue. Throws a lot of first reads. Hard to tell if his accuracy holds up given competition and not a better progression reader than Hurts at this point. Ridder?  Read issues, consistency issues, quick to run. Reminds me of Paxton Lynch.  Real project that can fail pretty easily.  Crum?  Talent but failed against big conference teams.  Late round/UDFA gamble type.  Willis?  Why leave Auburn instead of fighting for a job.  Failed against bigger schools.  Real gamble that hasn’t shown a better ability to read than Hurts. Howell?  Talk about reading and accuracy issues and a tendency to run.   All except Corral in all star games. Only one who showed was Coan. @austinfan is right about the quality of this draft at QB

Wentz was attractive because he played in a pro style offense.  Not many QBs do that in college these days. Most learn to read option or RPO, not progression read.   Most are playing against zone defenses.

Now, I like zone reading offensive approach like Riley and Harrell use.  Leach kind of started that. Both would stack receivers so a look at more than one receiver was possible for a zone look. Lots of quick reads. (Not a Hurts forte at this point.)  I think Nick was working on some of that but Reagor is a poor fit and Watkins is learning. The lack of agility or Reagor and JJAW (2 & 3 step stops and turns don’t fly in the NFL).  That sort of read depends on the WR as much as the QB.  Basically understanding the open spots. Reagor? Stoll?  JJAW?  Ward gets it, he just doesn’t quite have the athleticism to shine in it.  Some of the QBs in this draft did well in that approach and Hurts did do a year of it with Riley. Does need a quick bigger WR and Hurts has to learn how to throw over the middle or he is toast in the NFL.

The fact that you say you "don’t know” if it’s the route running of Watkins, Reagor, and JJAW (not sure why he is even listed) for your argument is crazy. You’re a smart dude. There is so much all 22 that shows our receivers running wide open all game. They are schemed open, and Hurts doesn’t have the cognitive ability to find them. Then you add that Dallas Goedert has too many drops?  He had some bad ones last season, but he’s open all the time and any QB would kill to have him as a weapon. Quez would have had 200 yards in the Wild card game if Hurts had any ability to read a defense, something he has not improved on at all in his college and pro career.

Every single bad trait you list above is why Jalen Hurts can’t throw a forward pass.  They are all part of it. He can’t read a defense, can’t go through progressions, sees ghosts behind the best OL in football last year, runs in circles for no reason, and he has weak arm strength.  He hasn’t improved any of these in 22 games. In fact, he may have gotten worse. He will only deter the development for a stud like Devonta Smith, who runs open consistently every game.  He is not the future, and his running ability is moot point. Who cares at this point?  Put in the QB that actually understands routes and hits receivers in stride to make sure they continue to develop.  That guy is already on the roster even though I understand he’s not the future. Then draft or trade for your future guy next season. Hurts does nothing for this team this season.

With this o-line I think it would be hard to not find a competent spot starter. And like I said in another post, if that was the plan they could just give him a non guaranteed tender. But they opt to guarantee most of his contract which means he’s not going anywhere. I think Howie in general just always goes back to what he knows vs trying something new. This is Wards 6th year on the team and Scotts 5th. They are what they are.
