Devil's advocate...

 - Fletch is an all-time Eagle and they need to get treated differently.

 - You still need to field a team this fall.

 - Ridgeway is gone and you can't count on finding a replacement level DT in the draft.

 - Don't complain in October that Tuipulotu is taking important reps.

But yeah...the whole thing was clumsy.

They have to extend Hargrave I think.

$15M/1yr for Cox. This will be his farewell year.

Seriously?   That was a nothing move.   They got rid of that one escalator and then brought him back at the same cost?  "Saved" $2M this year on the cap in the process, only to dig $13M deeper into the cap for a guy who has no future here.   Not the smartest move.   Banner may have pulled the plug a bit early on a few players, but Howie doesn't know how to move on at all.

Eagles have restructured Darius Slay's contract, freeing up 11.9 mil in the 2022, per
They had cap room. Wonder if a new move is coming  #Eagles

Hoping its more around 10 with "incentives" to potentially reach 14.

Very true.  Sadly, Howie hasn't added much in the 'key pieces' department in a very long time.

All of the sudden turnarounds are about the QB.

TB - Brady
Cincy - Burrow
LAC - Herbert

Now we have $40M+ a year guaranteed as a baseline.

It's all about the QB.

I don’t disagree but at least he lost his Nike and Beats deals, and will probably never get a major endorsement deal again

I suppose there’s that. But the acquiring team assuring he doesn’t face a financial impact from actions that are also going to negatively impact the team’s W-L record is gross.

I sense an incoming move. Mathieu maybe…or a Danielle Hunter trade…or a WR trade…or all 3? Please please please.

DTs will be Hargrave, Cox, Milton and a day 1/2/3 rookie ala Wyatt, Davis, Winfrey, Jones.

I'm about to state the obvious:

Good QB means players will come

Without a good QB money talks

Eagles have neither.

LMAO, so that scumbag was in fact holding up the market. This entire situation, and especially with the Browns helping him to not have much of a financial burden should he be suspended is a joke. Meanwhile Calvin Ridley got suspended for a year for betting on a game with an online betting app that the NFL has a partnership with. Unreal.

For starters they're paying him $4 million less.

But what is the future dead cap hits.  Very curious to see how all the numbers come in

16 minutes ago, ManuManu said:

Tue fact that he got paid his full salary last year and will get his full practical 2022 salary because of the bonus is freaking gross. There is almost zero financial impact for Watson. I hope he gets taken to the cleaners in the civil suits. His inevitable six-game suspension isn’t enough.

I'm hoping that there's some "internal investigation" by the NFL which pushes off him getting suspended until 2023. Probably not but it would be satisfying.

They don't have to sign their rookies until after that which will be a decent amount of cap with two or three first round picks. No matter how it breaks down or when, they are saving cap with the Cox moves for this season, not adding to it. Therefore restructuring Slay shouldn't have anything to do with Cox.

I’m not going to act like I 100% know but my point is based on the basic understanding of the cap, because he was a post June 1st cut they will have to carry his original cap charge until June 1st. And since they re-signed him they are now concurrently carrying his new cap charge. So since Cox is now on the cap for more than he was a few days ago, and with the timing of both moves being basically back to back, a chunk of that is currently being used by Cox. Long term there will be savings eventually (I hope).

Coming from you it makes me feel brilliant.  Are you aware of the positive impact you have on others?

I was making a joke, you said you didn’t want an explanation of why you were wrong, so I didn’t explain

Should have just parted ways.  Go full youth movement.

But we are in year 2 of a rebuild... we need old players to suck up cap space to make no appreciable difference to the team and take snaps away from Milton Williams.  It's a rebuild... but we don't want to commit to it and remove bad contracts to free up money in the future.    But, what do I know?   I just complain about this and the Eagles have never been impacted by cap inflexibility/space.

43 minutes ago, Waiting4Someday said:

Agreed - given I never understood his previous contract I hope this in some way allows him to be traded.

Otherwise, the band-aid was off… use/save the cap for the future.

What team wants to pay him the $15M AND give up a draft pick as well, while he was a complete free agent that could have just signed him off the street just hours ago?

"Max”

That makes me feel slightly better.    This wasn't a great move though, even if its at only $7M.   Cox isn't at the same level of leadership or player as Kelce or Dawkins.  Those guys you overpay to keep around for one more year.  Cox?  He's not even the best DT on the team, possibly not even the 2nd best.   And once the draft rolls around, I'd like to think he'd be working to remain top 3.

I know which is why I liked your post and came back with another snarky response.  Also, Jason Fitzgerald from Over The Cap has an excellent piece about the Cox contract and future implications.

Not almost zero financial impact.  Literally zero financial impact.  His new contract is a HUGE raise for him.  He's getting MORE than he would if he had to play on his current deal AND... its 100% fully guaranteed.

To be fair....the cap keeps growing, so cap dollars this year are worth more than cap dollars next year.

Yeah, that's afan type logic.   Cox isn't the same as Kelce/Dawkins.  Only very few should get the truly special treatment.  Howie seems to give it to anyone who has made a Pro Bowl, and/or was part of the Super Bowl team.

If we are going more to the 4i, 0, 4i alignment, Cox is much less of a fit anyway.

My glimmer of hope is his Cox wasn’t interested in leaving so his agent didn’t even explore offers and we can trade him at least at the deadline. Far fetched, I know.

Yes, those would be 'key pieces'.

BUT... TB had the pieces in place with Evans, Godwin, their OL, and their DL.   Then added Gronk and a few other pieces.   It wasn't all Brady.
Cincy added a healthy Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase... that was a major contributing factor, and still had Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd to throw to as well.
Herbert and the quick turnaround there is trailing far behind those other two, primarily because the Chargers didn't have those other pieces in place around the massive upgrade at QB.
