Turned down more than $6M elsewhere?  Free agency really is an exercise in paying too much.  He was a target for me, but at under $3M

I'm not really on the same page as everyone else with respect to WR.  There seems to be a push for a bigger possession WR.  I think that's the last thing we need.  This is already a very constrained, unexplosive offense.  A reliable, sturdy possession target may help to make a bad passer less bad, but we are just committing further to the construction of an iron ceiling for the potential of this offense.

Devonta Smith is a slick route running intermediate range target: gets open nicely, toe-taps the sidelines, etc.  He is not a burner, does not really take the top off deep, and is not one of those guys you force the ball underneath for those explosive YAC plays because you want the ball in his hands.

Adding a better version of JJAW or Jeffery to this offense will take us nowhere.

Devonta Smith really should be paired with a vertically explosive threat.  And the offense still needs a weapon in space; we lack that one player that puts the defense on its heels and freezes them the second he possesses the football.

This need isn't something that MUST be addressed this offseason.  It's fine to wait until we have a passer who can actually make use of it.  But I also wouldn't waste resources in possession types to marginally improve the WR corps either.

Bengals are having themselves a very good off-season.

I dunno. I’d really like to see some form of competence from every WR in a three-WR set.

We don’t have that three competent WRs right now, and haven’t for quite some time.

I think it’s just a lazy narrative. "Smith is small, so we need someone big to pair with him.

Size shouldn’t factor into it. We should want simply the best WRs we can get.

Yeah, for Jalen Hurts specifically, a Deebo Samuel clone who you just scheme the ball to in space would work great. But you don’t trade up to draft Devonta Smith if that’s the kind of QB you want to go with long term. It’s underutilizing his best traits as a WR. Route running isn’t an important trait for Hurts’ skill set, as he doesn’t throw timing passes. But I think it’s been proven how badly it can go if you draft WRs who aren’t good route runners.

I’ll be interested to see how short sighted Howie is gonna be with his acquisitions this year

You are asking for a lot there.

The Eagles, under Howie, have showed some real issues with understanding fit with players they invest in...the most egregious example being their persistent investment in slow outside WRs during their commitment to 12 personnel with Ertz/Goedert.  They also went after some CBs that were a pretty bad fit for Schwartz' scheme with no regard for the responsibilities he would give them (and Schwartz has no regard for compensating for the limitations of those players either).

Devonta Smith is all about routes and timing; he needs to be paired with a polished passer.  A DK Metcalf could pair with a raw QB with a big arm.  And as you said, a Deebo Samuel underneath pairs well with a bad passer like Hurts or Jimmy G.

Granted, I don't want them to make any enduring personnel decisions based on who pairs well with Hurts.  But it's still a bad fit.

Quez is a vertical threat. We don’t have a QB to hit him deep.

I think Garret Wilson is going to be very very good. I would be fine with taking the talent and adding it to the WR room. They overthought the Reagor and Jefferson situation. Don't do that again. Wilson you two top notch young offensive weapons. Wilson can play inside or outside too.

Money usually talks. Depends on how much more we offered. I would've went 12 mil a year, put the ball back in his court.

Yep. The biggest thing is we need a WR you can put at the X who can beat press coverage. Smith wasn’t great at it as a rookie. We know Quez isn’t that.

I agree. Pierce, Pickens, Watson.

I couldn’t agree more.

It’s 2022. Defensive players aren’t allowed to play defense. The rules have turned football into a glorified track meet.

There is no reason to have a WR who has difficulty getting open. Every WR should be fast/shifty/elusive.

With that in mind, this is a very interesting thread from Twitter and how quiet some of the local Philly journalists are on the important questions that haven't been asked.

Seeing as some of the local journos read here, maybe they can find some cojones and ask some tough questions for a change

You have avoided the question twice now.  I'll take that as, you'd rather play in KC if you were him.

Good thing Patrick isn’t in New York cheering for the Giants or Jets

Yup allgier dropped for some after a less than stellar combine but watching his tape he's a physical runner, he hits the hole hard, he's not going to go down on arm tackles or first contact and while he doesn't have blazing speed or elite wiggle he's got solid vision and ability as a blocker and receiver

As a BYU fan he was fun to watch this year

The other guy I mentioned similarly plays well in traffic, Knight. Looks like both should be available in the 6th and we have 3 I think picks. Replacements 1A and 1B for Howard. The Hurzy Gurzy Man
