It’s crazy with Devonta. People will cite his 917 yards as underwhelming. But most people recognize that our QB missed reads where he was open down field A LOT. He missed him in the end zone A LOT. He missed him open on intermediate routes A LOT as he’d run from a clean pocket for 3 yards.

Just the throws where he missed him wide open when actually targeting him would have netted him an extra couple hundred yards And a few TDs. But if you take into account all the times he never even saw him or looked his way.... If Devonta had even decent (throwing) QB play last season, he would have been top 5 or 7 in yards. But he didn’t. So his numbers are underwhelming. But I just don’t see how any objective person can say that’s his fault

The only thing about Smith I noticed in a negative way last season is he’s not able to fight through NFL DBs to get to some of the deep balls Hurts threw to him.  Obviously Hurts was late and lofty on some of those throws, but Smith isn’t going to wrestle the ball away from anybody at 170 lbs.

Part of why I’m intrigued about a guy like Burks.  He’s more a guy who would win his share of those inaccurate, floated 50/50 Hurts-balls downfield

We’ve sucked at drafting/developing WRs. You won’t get any argument from me. That doesn’t mean WR is more valuable than DE.

"Give me a QB, two tackles, two ends, two corners, and I'll figure out the rest" -Andy Reid, early 2000s

I think today he'd same the same but would swap out corners for passing weapons

Pretty much, although I might quibble and say two pass rushers rather than two ends. A pass rushing DT can make a huge difference.

Just to he clear, I’m not saying WRs aren’t valuable, I just don’t believe they’re as valuable as DEs due to scarcity.

I don’t want to make any personnel decisions based on a QB who isn’t a passer

Says the guy who quotes 40 times for OL, DL, rbs, and linebackers when Howie brings in one with a good 40.

40 times don't matter anymore now that they have GPS.

For linemen, it's a measure of conditioning, 10 yard splits and jumping (leg explosion) is more important.

For DBs, hips are more important, but depends on the scheme, in zone you can excel with a 4.6 (see Sherman, Samuel), in man you need to be able to run with the fast guys.

Safties need to be faster (but not fast) these days b/c the box safety is close to obsolete.

LBs need to be faster since the two down MLB is close to obsolete, but even then, depends on the scheme, the ability to read and react can add 1-2 tenths of a second to your field speed (or subtract it from players who are slow on the uptake).

I agree with all that. This is how I'd rank them

1. QB

2. OT

3. EDGE

4. WR

5. CB

Do we know if the 2023 crop of QBs are going to be better? I don't watch college ball so I usually just go here for info on them

The issues with the 2022 class are smaller QB’s with decent arm talents.  Willis has a great arm, but he’s a boom or bust QB and a project, Strong has height and the arm, but a questionable knee. Pickett might be more pro ready than any QB taken last year, and the highest floor, but lowest ceiling, with an ok arm, and tiny hands. Corral will be a project coming from that crap Lane Kiffin runs.

2023 has Rattler, and likely Stroud (Ohio St) plus Young, (Alabama) I know you can’t scout helmet’s but it’s been forever since either of those schools put a top 10 QB in the NFL, (Ohio St never) plus Young is really short. Rattler has some arm talent but he seems like a head case.
A few other QB’s in 2023 will be Will Levi’s from Kentucky, Phil Jurkovec from BC,  and the guy getting no press is Tanner McKee from Stanford, 6’6” 230lbs.
Stanford runs more of an old school NFL offense and they let the QB actually think for themselves, it’s why Davis Mills was pretty good in Houston, and why Lincoln Riley QB’s hit a wall in the NFL.  Hurts, Mayfield, and Murray all need their hands held to run college offenses in the NFL, although it could be argued the Eagles with Hurts, is more of a HS offense.

Not every player would choose money over a legit shot at a super bowl. And you don’t really know if the eagles did offer more. I’d rather not wildly overspend on a safety just to get him here. What I like about the reddick signing is that it seems he wants to be here, it’s not all about the Benjamin’s….I’d rather not follow Jacksonville when it comes to roster building

Personally I don't care about Riddick wanting to be here, I want good players signed or drafted whether they want to be here or not. That said if a player absolutely doesn't want to be here there isn't much you can do about that

I think every Eagles fan should want Hurts to develop into a top-tier NFL QB, but most people who have watched with an analytical eye are pretty sure it’s not going to happen.  The odds are better than 50/50 at this point that Hurts will start in 2022 — for better or worse.

The real danger is extending him beyond that

I talk to non Eagles fans all the time. The only people that disagree with me that Hurts isn't the answer are "Eagles fans".

National media is very pro Hurts.

It’s pretty rare nowadays to have a bad WR class. With the yearly supply of WRs so plentiful, I don’t think it makes sense at this point to put WR over DE.

EDGE is clearly more valuable than WR. It's not particularly close.

The only argument for WR over EDGE is that WRs generally perform longer in their careers.

Why would Robert Woods only pull a 6th round pick in trade?  That seems like a steal.

Coming off ACL, salary and age... those are the things that make me think that its only a 6.

31 years old recovering from a ACL injury in November with a high salary.

Of course they are. Very good player.

Caught the re-run of the 2019 game against the WFT on NFL Network.  Ward had the good game scoring the go-ahead TD and making several important catches.  He may not be a star WR, but on that special day he shone thru.  The team just signed him as a role player who will do things that are asked of him, until they can find someone better.
