So do we have a 3 down linebacker ?

Reddick has played 850+ snaps each of the last 2 seasons for both Arizona and Carolina's schemes, which is over 80% of the snaps in games he was available for. I don't believe he's only a situational pass rusher.

The 2022 Eagles... Exactly the same as the 2021 Eagles but for the most part older.

Yep.  I have no delusions that we will get Hamilton in the draft, but we gotta do something.   Hell, we also need another corner ready to play.  Since according to AFan, you fill the roster with 1 year deals and draft their backups.

A lot of needs still. I think they missed the boat on addressing one safety this free agency period. They didn't even have to go Williams, there were others they could have gotten. It's been a multi year rebuild process and they continue to push needs to the following year. You can get one safety this draft at least. I like what Cine brings to the table. Nastiness, physicality and intimidation. Something this defense desperately needs. Plus has athleticism and can run.

The lack of safety in FA is the biggest surprise of the offseason. Like you said, there were a lot of options available. Now it looks like a safety in the first two rounds or bust.

I don't see how you could reasonably expect to walk away from this draft with a day one starter at safety

With a limited QB who has more tape out there to coach against

It's bizarre to me that the Lions taking Willis at #2 is expected now. I guess this is how you end up in franchise hell. He's not exactly the QB you want learning on the job.

There are at least four day 1 starting safety prospects in this draft, if the Eagles want one, they will get one.

Except for a much improved pass rush and LB play.

I watched Willis a few times in games not just highlights.  I don't see it. I know he wasn't surrounded by talent by he often didn't play great talent either. Just doesn't look the part to me.  Crazy to draft him 2.  Crazy to draft him top 10 tbh.

Plus older is not only a deterrent for our 30+ players, but it’s also a boon for the young ones. Does anyone expect DeVonta Smith to be the same player next year? Landon Dickerson, Josh Sweat, Milton Williams, Jordan Mailata? Goedert’s first year as the singular TE focus?  Despite some of the doom and gloom, our young core still has potential to blossom. Even Hurts may incrementally improve.

Eh. To be quite honest I don’t expect a whole lot from most of them.

Who needs to pay for safeties when they're 25 yards downfield?

The rest may get better but unfortunately Smith is maxed out till we get a new QB.

Most of the improvement for most teams year to year comes from players in their 2nd and 3rd seasons, a few continue to improve after that, but most are close to their peak by 25 years old/3 seasons of experience.

On defense, the typical progression is STs to deep backup to rotation backup to starter. Especially for later round/UDFAs/SFAs. Sts is where you impress coaches with energy, willingness to fight through blocks and tackle. Then you impress in practice, get some PT, look like you belong, get more PT, make some plays and gradually get a bigger role.

I think that's what they've been doing with DBs, you draft one or two studs, and surround them with hungry athletes who need coaching up, and hope to find a couple who can make that jump. What we don't know is how they evaluated these guys last season, we don't see them in practice every day.  Being on the 90 man roster doesn't tell you that much in March, after the draft they often cut a few, after mini-camps a few more, then pick up some guys. The last 20-30 guys are usually long shots who are primarily in camp to fill out third team practice squads, a few earn their way onto the PS. The key guys are the ones considered in the top 60, fighting for final roster spots.

But the DBs they added all pass the "physical skill test" in terms of workouts, but that just means they're "clay," are they quality clay that can be molded?

Smith can get better, as a rookie you could seem him struggle with the more physical nature of NFL defenses. As the season progressed, he got better at avoiding contact and setting up DBs. Watkins has more upside simply because he was less polished coming out of college. Don't know if they can teach Hightower to track and catch balls - he can routinely separate but not much good getting open if you can't catch.

Devonta Smith is the most important mystery on the current roster.

His optimistic comp was Marvin Harrison, who was very similar, but faster.  We all know Smith’s college career and what he did well coming out.  As a pro, all that route running and separation never translated because the QB couldn’t get him the ball.

Instead, Smith was forced to be a possession wr in traffic, as the defenders usually closed by the time the ball got to him.  He answered all the physical questions wonderfully.  Despite his slender frame, he has very good length, which he used very well to shield the ball from defenders in traffic.  With the way the game is played now, he showed that the lack of muscle really doesn’t matter for a wr.

Those questions, IMO, have been answered.  The remaining question is if what he DOES do great (get open all over the field with great routes, precision, without great speed) is enough to make him a true #1.

That can’t be answered until we have a qb and not a running back throwing him the football.

Protect him and add a cpl weapons and he will be a real good QB , imo

you can’t teach his arm talent

Worked out fine for Cooper Kupp, Devanta Adams, Diontae Johnson, etc.

Cameron Goode  looks like a nice late round pick .

The more I look at the draft and free agency the more I want an early round WR.  I don't care if Hurts is limited as a passer, we shouldn't be building the offense to prop up a limited QB.  Either he figures it out or is gone. Meanwhile top end WRs are starting to make more than LTs.  Getting a young stud WR or 2 on a rookie contract is going to become more and more important.

Agreed. I'm seeing Olave, Burks or Wilson (if he drops somehow) in the 1st round now.

And that doesn’t mean that Smith will be them and not Maclin.  Still remains to be seen.

I'm even ok with a guy like Pickens or Watson a bit later. But I want someone brought in with the expectation of taking a starting role.
