How do the points work out with this trade. On the surface it looks terrible but if the saints are as bad as I expect it’s a good gamble.

This is the value chart that is modeled on actual NFL trades.  Future picks are valued at the same level but 32 spots lower.  I think that means the future 1 is pick 50 and the future 2 is pick 82.  Using this model the Eagles traded 587.67 points to get 492.29.

... and all the folks who wanted to trade back for a 2023 1st round pick get their wish!

Not a bad trade at all, because I don't see the Saints as a playoff team next year.

Who is their QB?

Saints play the AFC North and NFC West next year… wow! 7 of those 8 teams were in the playoff hunt as late as week 16, and 5 of them made it.

On top of that, their 17th game is… LV, another playoff team. Their schedule next year is brutal. Brady is back, they play us being the 2nd place team, and Minnesota is the other 2’d place team they play.

Please explain how turning a mid first round pick into a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd looks terrible.

So, 18 for 19 is basically a wash to consider.

So, the deal is 16 and a late 5th for a first next year (Valued at second for this year), second in the year after (which would be valued at a 4th this year).. and a 3rd round pick in this draft... so, essentially trading a mid-first round pick for a 2nd, 3rd and 4th.     Eagles got a little less value back, but they get what they really want... a first for 2023.  I can't hate this.   I don't love it, but it's not a bad deal.  Definitely not a homerun though.

It's only under-valued because teams are impatient. Applying "time value of money" to picks is dumb, but GMs want to win to keep their jobs.

We dominated trade value. This is true based on every trade chart.

That future year draft value thing is a rough guide, but some of y'all take it way too seriously. Sure let's trade a 2022 7th for a 2028 1st.

I find it strange that they'd do this trade pre-draft. Unless if the Saints want to preemptively have ammo to move up into the top 10. Still weird.

They are likely looking to move higher, so this move makes that possible.

For 2022

Saints get #16 -- 1,000 points, #19 -- 875 points, #194 -- 12.2 points = 1,887.2 points

Eagles get #18 -- 900 points, #101 -- 96 points, #237 -- 1 point = 997 points, for a 890 point deficit.

For 2023 -- Saints 1st round pick should be at least 900 points if they miss the playoffs, so that would make the trade pretty even.

For 2024 -- Saints 2nd round pick is sheer profit.

I don't think this means they're definitely not taking a QB either. I think it just means they got insurance for next years draft in case either Hurts, Minshew, or a draft pick don't work

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Couldn't they just trade #18, a third, next years first and a 2024 2nd to do the same thing?

A team in the top 5 might want two firsts this year...   There was some talk about a 3 way deal involving the Eagles, I thought.

I think next years is better , and more pro style QBs too

Beast - who was the QB that transferred from Texas A&M?

I thought he had potential.

This moves saves about 2 million in 2022 cap space too. Signing 3 1st round picks would have taken up a lot of cap room so this eases that burden as well.

What this trade says to me is the Eagles didn't feel Kenny Pickett was worth a trade-up to #4 to get in front of CAR.  No other QB in this draft class is even in the discussion to move up for.  Howie traded with another team who may make that same move.

Calzada , and I agree , I like him . Went to auburn , I think Rattler gets right , too , at South Carolina

If only Howie was as good at drafting as he was at wheeling and dealing.

Howie bent the saints over on this one and stole their lunch money and with Howie's track record of drafting it will be all for naught☹️

I think I would like this trade even if it weren't for the likely better QB class in 2023.

Another great move by Howie. He's a solid enough draft away from back to back good off-seasons.

We fleeced the Saints. Hopefully they package both picks in a trade up for a QB, as that QB would sit and not help the team win in 2022.

It's possible the Saints are terrible and fall apart.  Jameis may not play well again and they lost players on the o-line.  There's a new head coach that may not be as good as Payton.  Vegas has their projected win total at under 8.  If they don't make the playoffs then this trade is a definite win for Howie.  The problem is that they are playing in a pretty weak division in a Conference that is pretty thin at the top.

Over analyzing… This deal is two 1st rounders and a 6th for two 1st a 2nd a 3rd and a 7th.

That 1st have potential to be top ten and looking at the Saints schedule it should be. I think it’s a great deal.

Just to point out nfc west may or may not be as good next year. Seattle is going to be awful. Cardinals have their own issues going on with Murray and they always play bad down the stretch with kingsbury so when you play the cardinals matters. And niners may or may not have Jimmy G back and if it’s not him it’s a huge question mark with lance. Rams are really the only one that you can bank on.

Vegas has the saints at 7.5. Right where i think they likely are as a 7-8 win team.

Even if the Saints sneak in and lose in the 1st round of the playoffs, they're drafting 19-21...and it's still a good trade.

Now, what can he do with Andre Dillard.  If he can somehow get a 2nd out of him that would be something else.  I also think he might trade down again.

The witness is a former Vice President of Sales for the franchise.  I would guess he likely has some receipts.

This trade tells me the Eagles weren’t happy with any of the QBs in this draft. They did the due diligence on Pickett and Howell all the other guys are projects and didn’t like the fit.

At this point the Eagles have ammo to move up to get Stroud or Young Potentially next year.

The only unfortunate thing is we have to waste anOther year with Hurts…
