It was only a problem in the beginning of the year, but it was a league wide issue.  There were so many td's last year with lineman way past 1 yard , the nfl just decided to not be as strict with it thats all.

I agree I don’t think the refs are strict with either of these rules (OL downfield/rub), hence my frustration at our disturbing lack of execution.  For this offense these exercises should be fundamental and sorted out in TC.

they were, remember the first 3-4 weeks of last year.  We were on a historical pace for penalties.  Then we got better.   I think we were the 21st least penalized team in the nfl

Eagles were running one of the shortest TC practices in the league.  Knew there was going to be major rust and kinks to iron out early in the season.

flip side of that coin was that we had the least amount of injuries in a season in a while.  Give me that all day.

Giants could come away with two defensive cornerstones to go along with an already strong defensive backfield.

and they would be left with an abysmal oline, qb and skill position players.

COVID also screwed up the pre-season. This year should be more normal, and Sirianni doesn't have to do installs, so they can focus more on execution.

With Foles, we really didn't run RPOs, since Foles couldn't run, it was more glorified play action as a staple of the offense, with one or two quick reads. If the QB can't run, that's pretty easy to defend once you figure it out.

With Hurts (or a similar QB), the RPO isn't a staple of the offense, but a look designed to keep DEs from crashing down the LOS for TFLs that disrupt drives. It's a decoy to help the running game.

Wrong

That’s fair - but these are mental reps really, no danger of injury if emphasized.

That’s an improvement - but our style of play changed, where we started actively shortening the game offensively.

Not true.  You are conflating RPO with Read option.

Beat me to it.

That 1 yard rule is a little bit like holding in todays nfl.  It can be called on almost any play.  The fact that the Eagles were called for it early in the season and not later in the season has nothing to do with Hurts and everything with how the game is called.

And that they called RPOs far less frequently.

What a meaningless chart. For most of the teams the average differs by no more than four months. Wow!  Earth shattering news.  Stop the presses.  So many reporters struggling to show value.

Chris Simms' top 5 Edge

5.  Bonitto

4.  Karlaftis

3.  Johnson

2.  Walker

1.  Hutchinson

No Thibodeaux.  Unfortunately, they cut out the part where he explains why he left him out of the top 5.

I'm warming up to Karlaftis.  He is a lot better player than I previously thought.  Quick first step, powerful with his hands and only 21 years old

Players I'd be OK trading up for:

Hutchinson, Thibs, Stingley, Gardner, Hamilton, Davis

Players I'd be happy with taking at our current spots:

Johnson, Walker, Booth, Hill, Williams, Wilson, Burks, Karlaftis

Players I'd be OK with in the first but would really prefer a trade down to get:

McDuffie, Elam, Lloyd, Dean, Cine, Wyatt, Ojabo, Jones

Well, with a running QB, the RPO is a read option as well as a pass option.

That is, Hurts can first read the LB/S, and go run/pass, but if he goes pass, and his read is covered, he can pull it down and run - because this is all happening in a couple seconds, it has the same impact as a read option, because the DE only reads the QB keeping the ball, not whether it's a pass or run. So it forces him to stay home. If the DE bites, then Hurts can run even on a RPO where he keeps the ball, because why pass for 5 yards if the right side is open for a run?

With someone like Foles, it's a run/pass option, and if the defense disguises the coverage of the pass option, the play is dead. Which is what limits the RPO for most offenses.

I suspect with most QBs who can run, some of this is built into the scheme - if the field is open take off, because it's always safer than throwing the ball on a short pass.

It’s always a "hot take” with Simms, but I guess he needs to get noticed somehow.
I like Walker but there isn’t a whole lot  he showed at Georgia for anyone to come to that conclusion, plus he’s gonna need a Stoutland like D-Line coach to be an effective pass rusher.    Walker ahead of Johnson as an edge, lol.
Next season when Will Anderson is 3rd in his top 5 edge rushers, hopefully Simms is banned from anything to do with the NFL.

The weakness of it is no downfield throws, because the decision must be quick.

If you bake it for yourself, absolutely.

But that's the same with the three step drop. Some plays are designed to move the ball.

With a ball control offense, whether run based or dink and dunk (or some combination of the two) the big play comes out of exploiting the frustration of the defense, catching them overplaying the run/short pass. Safeties cheat up to stop the run, CBs gamble on the short pass and get burnt by double moves.

Can we trade Reagor for Toney? Both making simular contracts since picked at same position in draft, Tony is only 25 days younger then Reagor. Add in a 7th round pick since Toney has an extra left on his contract. Both have issues but Reagor is flat out done in Philly. At least we can give it a try and if Toney don;t work its really no skin off our backs since we were going to lose Reagor anyway

Is the consensus that the Jags are keeping Laviska?

I liked toney coming out of the draft, thought the giants over drafted him, having said that his rap sheet is pretty sketchy.

Tons of injuries, poor practice habits, poor in meetings, didn't study his play book, doesn't show up for anything voluntary, sounds like the dude mailed it in the minute he heard he was guaranteed a first round contract.
