It is a mystery what’s going on with the run vs pass.  We know the pass dominant philosophy comes straight down from the owner (and he’s not wrong for it either).  He has dictated that for years, directly, to the coaches.  Their extreme (if ill-fated) investment in the WR position also is part of this.

And yet…they went out of their way to draft Hurts in round 2.  They went out of their way to keep him and support him as the starting QB.  Did they kick the tires on some well publicized upgrades?  Sure.  But these pass obsessed owner/GM/coach triumvirate have placed a run first QB in an offense that is built to throw, throw, throw.  They didn’t have to build it this way, but here we are.

Oh, its an enigma, no doubt.  The addition of Brown at such a cost has to mean a return to a commitment to the passing game.

I am a little concerned that they brought him to pursue the SF model.  Use AJ Brown in the same way Debo is used.  Build your offense around dumping the ball to him and scheming it to him with easy underneath passes where he has a chance to function as a glorified RB YAC-ing it up.  Get Hurts to run for ~700 yards, use the power running game behind our big OL, then dink and dunk with an elite YAC guy.

That’s the best way to build around Hurts, but it’s not going to cut it.

There is an extremely glaring issue with EJ Perry that I see watching that video of shrine game highlights. He has a very long, looping delivery. Without going back and watching old Tebow stuff, I want to say, its as bad as Tebows. That ball loops all the way down near his hip before he throws it. He needs a rebuild. I would say he is not making the team. Maybe practice squad.

Really love that report on Blankenship. Guy has a real chance here. He may have some issues with his tackling. But he is an NFL caliber athlete who has range in coverage.

You mean the model that has led to the Super Bowl or conference championship every other year for the past decade?

Right because SF has a horrid post-season record.

I mentioned this in a portion of an earlier post, but never got any opinions.  As we try to figure out the situation at safety, look to the front 7.  We have an absurd investment in DT.  First round picks, huge contracts, first round picks on huge contracts.  We’ve got 2 DE’s who, at this point, are better stopping the run than the pass in Graham and Barnett.  We’ve got a 283 lb DE/DT hybrid who will also be taking snaps at the edge.

If this defense needs the safeties to consistently play in the box and help stop the run, we’ve got bigger problems.  The flexibility of a safety to step up in the box and play the run just shouldn’t be a big priority.  They need safeties that can cover.

Yes.  I’d opt not to go with a blueprint that is built around trying to achieve maximum success despite constantly being at a disadvantage in QB matchups.  And let’s set the blueprint bar higher than 0 SBs.

I don't think Lurie would stick with a model where they can't pass well as a long term solution.

There’s no way in hell that’s the reason.  They want to throw the ball.  If Hurts can’t prove that he can do it, he will not be here past this season

which basically means he will not be here past this season

Question: if you plug in an elite veteran QB ala Rodgers into our current team, how far do they make it in the playoffs?

Its supposed to primarily be cover 2 with the safeties. Their primary responsibility will be their deep zone. Coverage is #1 for them. Front 4 or 5 is supposed to be taking care of the run. DL is going back to the play the run on the way to the QB philosophy. I can see Reddick maybe being turned loose and freelancing like Babin did. 2 LBs like White and Dean will be helping in coverage.

Rodgers might be a bad example haha

I'd point out in 2019, SF passed for 4,000+ yards and 28 TDs, with Kittle as their top receiver, and Samuel, Sanders and Bourne as their WRs, and meh RBs.

The Eagles should redshirt Strong and have him put the majority of his focus in 2022 on getting healthy for 2023. I still can't believe he wasn't drafted. On arm talent alone there's no he shouldn't have been an early day three pick.

No need. He seems fine.

You mean with Carson Strong.

At that point it depends on the CB play from #2.

If we can sign Mathieu, and #2 is just ok we would be contenders with the rams and bucs.

As it stands right now with both of those holes in the secondary,  I'm still not confident.  I think we may have a shot to win a wildcard game. That's about it.

Not just the ground he covered, but the angle he took. Singleton makes that ply 5 yards downfield.

AJ Brown will be used the same way he was used in Tennessee. Play action in-cuts and some plays down the field. His play strength, YAC ability, explosion (for his size especially), and strong hands are perfect for that kind of style. Our passing game will be all about the big plays we can make on play action. Chunk plays. They're not going to try to have Hurts lead 10 play drives down the field. If we can run, great. If not, it's going to be reliant on big chunks off play action.

love it LOL

Singleton doesn't come close to making that play but would jump around afterwards.

I'd never seen that before or any indication that he had a bad attitude.  It's hard to know how widespread that feeling is.  In fairness, I get his focus on knee health over the rest, because that has been the criticism for months on end. Either way, that's not a good report.

Other teams made offers after the draft which is why his contract is higher than usual for an UDFA. The Eagles interviewed him at the Senior Bowl, and the Combine,
His biggest mistake at the Senior Bowl and Combine was trying to prove his knee was healthy, instead of focusing on what he does well.  Maturity wise he hangs his head and curses loudly if a receiver drops a ball, or he makes a bad throw. In the NFL the QB is the face of the franchise, and acting like a child only worked for Tom Brady.
Strong was responsible for the 10 other players, he set the protection, the primary and secondary receiver on each play for the last 2 seasons, so I’m not worried about a few teams saying he didn’t know his plays, that’s bunk.
Jason Kelce sets the protections for Hurts, and it’s one of the reasons the Eagles drafted Jurgens, he can recognize defenses as well.
Anyone remember Howard Mudd?  Vick fell apart in 2012 under i him because he decided Vick should be making those calls after Kelce got injured.
 Can Hurts make these call’s?

https://www.nfl.com/_amp/michael-vick-bemoans-eagles-o-line-coaching-change-0ap1000000118161

In 2020, Strong had 4tds on passes that traveled 50 plus yards, that’s the most since PFF came into existence, and in the FBS, no other QB had more than one in 2020.
If he can’t relearn to step into all of his throws, he may not make it past preseason, but if he can he’ll be a successful NFL QB.
