With the season over and the weekend behind us, what meaningful experience did this team get Sunday?

The real reward was the swag they made along the way.

Hopefully a clear-eyed view of what this team needs and how good or not-so-good the team is.

There have been so many people over the years from Mixon on down that people on here wanted nothing to do with.

Kind of ironic, one of the biggest Mixon defenders was rtk, and he is anti Watson.  I guess punching women is OK in his eyes.

Generally speaking though, there’s been debate on what’s better. Building a great roster then looking for the QB or finding a great QB and then building the roster.

I think historically the former is a lot harder to do than the latter. For one, with an elite QB, the roster you need to win a Super Bowl doesn’t have as high a bar as one without an elite QB. But there are franchises that have gone decades without an elite QB. And it’s not like some of them haven’t invested in them either. They’re hard to find. Even when you pick high in a draft.

Think of how many rosters out there in NFL history were Super Bowl caliber, but we just didn’t know it because they didn’t have a good enough QB playing with it.

And also, teams with ready made rosters tend to panic at QB. Like the Niners did this year. Traded all that draft capital to go up and get Trey Fing Lance. Because they didn’t wanna waste the window prime of that roster. So in some ways it could actually increases your chances you never find that QB because you’re either drafting not high enough or making panic moves to fix QB and don’t want to waste the primes of your roster.

On the other hand, if you take care of QB first, I think everything else kinda falls into place. It’s no guarantee, but if you have the best QB in your division, at the very least that’s a great jumping off point to contention. And could be a more attractive destination for free agents.

I think you get your QB when one is available. I don’t believe in forcing a QB into position. That’s how you get a bust. If you need to build the rest of the roster and get by with a stop gap, so be it. But absolutely don’t pass up a QB you really love simply because the roster isn’t complete yet. A roster is almost never complete anyway. They can always be improved somehow.

We don’t know that he didn’t. Outside of an obvious trick play, what could we point to and say he didn’t bring something new to the table? I’m not saying he did, but when the QB is that bad it’s hard to tell from TV copy.

One example might be the stutter and go from Smith. It was schemed up and should have been six. Hurts bailed the pocket and threw a pick instead.

Another example could be the Watkins play that Hurts missed him on. Maybe it was a staple play, maybe it was an unscouted look. I couldn’t say.

I do know it’s hard to judge a playcaller when the QB actively holds back the offense.

Boom.

I agree though, it is hard to tell whose at fault when the QB is playing as bad as poorly as Hurts was.

I hesitate to offer excuses, but I will in Goedert's case. The Eagles actually ask him to block, unlike, say, Travis Kelce. That beats up his hands.

Meh.   That's a weak excuse, if you ask me.   I'm not asking him to make great one handed grabs... but when the ball goes between both hands, that's a drop and that needs to be cleaned up... OR they need to not ask him to block as much.   I remember Mark Bavaro blocking a ton with the Giants... and still being a receiving threat, and not dropping balls much like that.

Agreed.  Beating up on the division and the Jets might have left them with too rosy of a view.   Not being able to even compete with the Bucs was the exact opposite of the end of the season's games.

I'll add, what can they really change when the QB can't throw and the defense doesn't have NFL quality talent outside of about 4 players?   Sweat is a rotational DE, and he was out.  Barnett is a liability (which we saw again).  Cox is a shell.  Hargrave is MIA.  Kerrigan was their best DL in that game... think about that for a minute?! .   Then they have Slay in the secondary.  Maddux is a decent nickel, but he's not good enough to defend Gronk.  But, then again, no one else on the team had a chance either.  Just a giant hole at LB.

Yep, Bowles knew Smith and Watkins covered on those two walk-in TDs. He knew to leave Goedert uncovered and he’d kill a drive with a drop.

I like HonestNFL, but that seems incredibly harsh given that Hurts was a trainwreck.

Bowles basically singled us up most of the game, daring the QB to beat us. He couldn’t.

Sirianni said he didn’t do a good enough job on his secondary calls to get out of bad run looks, so maybe he was bad. Or maybe they look bad because the QB was bad?

Some argue that just being in a playoff game is meaningful. I'd maybe agree if the team wasn't getting blown out

Bucs had a good team and got Brady. I think Chiefs had a good team before they got Mahomes but they've been adding since they got him. Not sure what you'd categorize us and Foles with. Broncos had a good team and a great defense when they added Peyton

I think the Eagles have a pretty good team too. I think it would look championship caliber with an elite QB and a couple more pieces.

I've noticed the Hurts fans blame Nick for the loss. I think numerous people have access to that twitter account and one of them is a big Hurts fans

So for all future issues, are we officially done blaming McNabb and blaming Wentz going forward ??

Nothing Sirianni could do, other than run Howard more (or at all).  Bucs were blitzing their safeties off either OT -- sometimes both.  I said this at halftime, cannot have the other team's safeties making plays behind your LOS.

Bowles stacked the box and dared the Eagles to beat them through the air.  I'm sure the coaches knew it was coming; we knew it was coming.  Our QB can't complete the slants that Aikman kept calling for, he couldn't get the ball to the sideline on 4th down -- should have been a pick.  The RPO's got swallowed up behind the LOS.  Shut down Hurts' running lanes and it's game over for the offense.  Nothing can be done if the QB can't throw.

Defensively it was the same thing we saw all season against good opposing QBs.  The game was a scrimmage.  31-0 in the 3rd quarter is a scrimmage.

Are you referring to this one?

You can not spread it out.  Once a player retires, it is the same as being cut, and all future money accelerates to the current year.

They will probably ask him to wait until post June 1st.  I think that would put about $10 million of the number in 2023.

I like it. That then puts us into first place for 2023 dead cap.

I'm no Hurts fan but Sirianni didn't call a good game.  The team came out unprepared after resting and looked bad. Both things can be true in that Hurts was terrible and so was Sirianni.

Dead cap shmead cap, all that matters is that you keep the players you want and sign the players you want.

Yep.

But would he be okay with being the backup?

He should be because Russell will cover more than half the rent.

For anyone interested in Carson Strong.   Not a great game by him, but in it you can see 3-5 throws that are special.

I have always believe losses, especially bad losses, bring out the best learning lessons:

  • according to the broadcast 29 Eagles got their first playoff experience
  • the coaching staff got their first together as a team, including scouting, game-planning and other preparations...it may have went badly but that is valuable information and experience as well
  • they got exposed in all  areas; offense, defense, special teams and coaching. They get to use how TB game-planned against them as a self-evaluation tool for next year and the offseason

$5.9M dead for 2022 and $13.5M moves to 2023.

I think dunking on the play calling, especially to excuse Hurts, is ridiculous. Bowles has the talent and speed on defense to basically stack the line and dare the QB to beat him. And Hurts simply couldn't do it. If Hurts hits some of those throws, Bowles has to back off and then the running game could get going. Nick was calling plays that got guys wide open, but our QB simply couldn't deliver. TB was a horrible matchup given their speed on defense, especially at the LB level. We could run against stacked boxes when it was the Giants or Washington, but not against a D with this talent.
