There is an argument that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the greatest NBA player of all-time.  In fact, when I was growing up it was almost universally accepted.  When Jordan came along most people defaulted to the opinion he was the greatest, and 6 NBA titles without a loss likely confirms it -- but it's funny how greatest NBA player is somewhat dependent on which generation you grew up in.  A lot of "old-timers" still believe Kareem is the all-time best.  Now a lot of kids want to put Lebron into that spot.

We are all prisoners of the moment. Sucks for me though - I came in at the end of the Jordan era and so only exposed to Lebron and Kobe.

I’ve had enough of this guy. Tom Brady retiring from football has nothing to do with you, Davey.

Being humble and admitting  you suck does not mean you can do anything about it.

People keep talking about this work ethic and drive, unfortunately, that does not mean you can get better.  Nobody sucked with more heart and effort than Kurt Coleman.

Kurt Coleman started 83 games, including for the 15-1 Panthers. Give me more late round picks who suck like that!

That ITB podcast was really interesting, from the Bradford trade to the Jefferson pick to why some of his picks failed to the use of analytics to eliminate players from their draft board to the use of psychological testing.

It’s worth a listen.

Bill Russell is the GOAT

It's not even close. Wilt, Shaq, Olajuwon. Just off the top of my head

He was never as good as his effort and heart.

Wilt Chamberlain was the greatest center of all time, when he got the right talent, the 1966-67 Sixers might have been the greatest team of all time, at least in the top 5.

Kareem isn't even close.

he is just pointing out that Tom spent 20 years  at the Pats, and not a word. 6 of his 7 Sb's with the Pats- not a word.  His message is correct.

I always liked Coleman, seemed eagles gave up on him way too early

He had a solid career, especially for a 7th rounder

I'd go Wilt.  My favorite was Hakeem.  He could do it all.

Yeah, if I was picking a 5, I would go with Hakeem even though I consider Russell the GOAT.

"Patriots fans” didn’t even exist until AFTER Brady won his first Super Bowl. It’s not like we’re talking about Eagles/Chiefs/Steelers/etc. fan bases.

More importantly, you know Portnoy cares about the spotlight and not "the message” (that every single person has been repeating for the last two hours).

He could be but you seem to dismiss mobility when looking at "developing QB's".  There are games we won thanks to Hurts' mobility that we would have not won with a less mobile QB this past season.  (784 yards rushing with 10 rushing TD's).

And whether or not having a "mobile" QB is a "long-term winning strategy" in the NFL is another debate.  Personally, I lean towards having a semi-mobile QB who is a good pocket passer.  (Most Super Bowls have been won by your proto-typical pocket passers).    That said, these types of QB's don't grow on trees.  So if the Eagles want to develop a mobile QB who they think they can develop into a better pocket passer, I'm not against that either.

You bet I do.  Until a run first QB wins a Super Bowl, I'll stand by that.  The #1 factor is passing.  The rest comes after.  Running is a plus, but it is not a plus that overcomes passing deficiencies.  So, if you have two QBs that have similar passing ability, you give the nod to the one with the legs.  But, if one QB is significantly better at throwing... then you go with the arm and forget the legs.

Lack of mobility didn't really seem to hold back Brady, Manning (Peyton), etc.

I'm not against mobile QBs, I am against QBs who's primary skill is mobility.  That doesn't work.  So, you either have to bridle them and keep harping on staying in the pocket... like AR did with McNabb, especially early.  It's why Steve Young had to be bridled by Bill Walsh to become what he ultimately became.  But, if the coaches start to really embrace the running aspect, they undermine that and the player starts to bail out of the pocket when they don't have to.  McNabb's best day as a passer was probably in 2002 against the Cardinals on his broken ankle... he was great that day, he sat in the pocket and made the throws.  But, he reverted again when healthy.

1st Hurts- i'll add,

  • Has trouble reading defenses
  • he bails from clean pockets, does not go through his progressions well
  • He is slow to make decisions and this causes his throws to be late, often causing the WR to have to slow down or stop the route, or worse come back to the ball.

2nd - when watching young Qb's early on in their careers you watch for things that display ability. Things like having the ability to make some NFL caliber throws. Being able to read defenses and make your progression reads. Some clearly show they have the talent, and as you correctly asserted here, just need to work on consistency and learning more of the PRO game.  And Allen, Herbert, Burrow and even Wentz in his 1st year displayed some of those traits which make you take notice.

And sorry- but Hurts has yet in his 2 Rookie seasons shown me any of that. If it weren't for his running ability he'd have been a complete disaster.  As it is, a good deal of his passing stats are from garbage time when the other teams shift into an umbrella coverage after they have a good lead. And also against really bad teams.

Precisely.  You don't scout QBs with the box score.

If Hakeem grew up today he would be a good three point shooter, too. He might be the most underrated superstar of all time. The guy dominated Shaq! It was young Shaq, but still…

Put him in any era and he’s arguably the best center. That’s crazy.

Like Wilson but another 6’ fast WR isn’t the problem.  Need a larger WR that runs good routes and can catch and block. Love Rambo’s game but another light, short WR?  Emerson is not fluid.  Probably more of a zone CB than man cover.  Size of a S and plays a bit like one.  So hard to,scout CBs with televised games as our option. Like Linderbaum (you have seen the discussions with JR on size going forward).  Ebiketie is a good edge but light and plays high at times.  Worry about his ability to seal.  Good value where you grabbed him but late for the Eagles DL needs.  Mafe, good value at placement. Kind of Jackson 2.0.  Not really great first step and lacks great bend.  So so in sealing the edge in run D.  Wright seems a little stiff in the hips and looks smallish.  Smoke Monday is a SS in the NFL.  Doesn’t fit the need for a FS. Harvell-Peel. Another SS.  (This draft fails my expectations at S). He is stiff.  Not great instincts in coverage.  I have doubts about speed for all the DBs in your draft.

Can’t really comment on McCollum as watched very little Sam Houston.  Also no thoughts on Fayad.  Assume you picked because they were available.

I mean, I like Josh Sweat but he is NOT a Pro Bowl player my goodness.

Also, PE.com stop trying so hard to be clever or hip with your tweets.  Don't Sweat the technique is just stupid.

On the contrary, he SHOULD Sweat the technique.
