Charles Barkley once said, three players in NBA history can take over a game without scoring.  Magic, Stockton and Rodman.

I can’t believe Ben Simmons wasn’t mentioned…lol

I don't think that AFan and I do agree with the 'grab a franchise QB when you can'.  He seems pretty solidly in the build the team first, then get the QB.  The biggest issue with that plan is that you can't assume you will be in position to get the QB you want.  Chip Kelly desperately wanted Mariota, to the point that he was willing to trade the moon to get him, but the Titans wouldn't move out of that pick, because they wanted him too.  Same with the Dolphins and Burrow (according to recent reports), but the Bengals had no interest in moving out of #1, because they also wanted Burrow.  So, the build first - get the QB later plan which causes you to pass on a QB now, because you are assuming you can get one just as good later is where we disagree.  There's no guarantee ever in the NFL of that, and so you have to strike when the opportunity arises... unless you are in the first camp... and maybe if you are in the second... but maybe.

When you convince yourself you have to find a QB (or WR or . . . ) is when you reach and make bad draft mistakes, we've seen that again and again.

If Garopollo could run like Hurts, the 49ers are in the SB. You don't have to find the perfect QB, and you shouldn't get obsessed with the Holy Grail QB.

You look to upgrade at the right cost, if a prospect comes along that you truly believe has top ten potential you go for it, but you don't draft a QB just to check off that box, or make a mega-trade because you think a good but not great QB (Stafford) can carry you to the promised land. Truth is, Rams got lucky in the playoffs, Stafford is a slightly better version of Cousins, great counting stats, but you can also count on some bad throws when it counts. You can't count on a DB dropping an easy interception.

Building a team works b/c it allows you to win with a wider range of QBs, if you have an OL and running game, you don't ask your QB to do as much, if you have a good defense, your QB doesn't have to win shootouts, and so on. The odds are against the Eagles landing an Allen or Mahomes THIS CENTURY, maybe they get another Wentz (top 10-12 guy). Good but not great, but with the right team, good enough.

Will Hurts be good enough? We'll know by the end of 2022, but if they have a great draft, if he's not, you're in great shape to look for an upgrade.

Trade the house for a QB before you build the team, you end up with Herbert on the outside of the playoffs.

Hahaha

Fair enough. I do always find it hilarious that the Eagles filter information to the masses through Merrill and pretend that we don’t know what they’re doing.

Yes, Merrill we know, the Eagles love Hurts.

Yea, I'm sure those 4 Chargers fans are really disappointed to have Herbert going forward.

The closer it gets to the draft the more the media will hype up this QB class.  The more I learn about each of these guys, the less enthusiastic I am about the Eagles drafting them.

In the context of upgrading from Hurts, however, I'm inclined to say

Yes -- Pickett, Strong, Ridder

No -- Willis, Corral, Howell

Willis, Corral, Howell, and Zappe are barely 6’, it’s not the tallest QB class.  At least Pickett, Ridder, and Strong can actually see the field.

This is false.  Hurts is good enough to be an almost playoff guy, which puts you at pick 16-19, which is not great shape to find an upgrade.

You have the resources now, and if you don't think Lowie is all in on finding a QB, you are kidding yourself.

Just read the Jeff Lurie quote in my signature, tells you all you need to know.

I really don't understand why so many people are so confident that Hurts is going to be able to suddenly change his game. This is what he did at Bama, OU and continues to do here.  His arm isn't going to suddenly get stronger either.

Tim Tebow had just as much drive and just as much as the right stuff and people couldn't wait to run him out of town.

This is more about favorites than rankings.  Jason Williams was a good enough shooter, but his playmaking was electric.

Anthony Mason was the genesis of the modern NBA point forward.  Not sure you watched a lot of those Knicks teams if you think Mason was not a good perimeter defender.

Also, in building this team, you have plenty of scoring with Hakeem, Barkley and Klay, team is long, and would cause problems defensively.

I would definitely have Ron Harper on my bench at PG for defense, and my 6th man would be Clyde Drexler.

Other favorites on my bench would be Walt Williams, Rodman, Lamarcus Aldridge, Dan Majerle, Marcus Camby, John Starks

Gotcha, I did watch those Knicks teams, mason was ok, he moved pretty good for a big guy.

Loved Walt the wizard Williams. I think without the knee issues he'd had a better career.

Not a fan of lemarcus Aldridge, he's soft, he's almost 7 ft tall and all he does is shoot mid range jumpers 👎

Starks as a knick not as a jazz man😉

Thunder Dan I have to hate because he was a jazz killer.

Not a fan of camby either see Aldridge.

If I'm going a team of just favorite players

Throughout the years excluding jazz players

PG Tim Hardaway. SG Steve Smith, SF Dominique wilkin, PF  Larry Johnson C Hakeem.

Bench I'd have to have mugsy bogues, glen Rice, cliff Robinson, too many other to name off top of my head.

Yeah, definitely should have drafted one of the guys who went after him, and just waited for the next Herbert to be available at their pick in the future.

If you consider Tim Duncan a center I'd put him right there with Olajuwon.  Most consider him a power forward, though.

I consider him a center but as a jazz fan I'm obligated to say nothing but horrible things about him.😁

Wait what don't you like about George Karlaftis?

You think Merrill has any clue about QB evaluation?

He’s just spouting what the Eagles are feeding him.

Jaguars had the right idea. Take a guy at 9 overall and then flip him for a Dan Arnold and pick swap in 2 years. That's how you build a team.

Critique away fellas

I'll need to grind some tape on these guys, cross reference them to my big board, and factor in any late risers or fallers determined by my proprietary analytics using data from yesterday's senior bowl measurements and shrine game practices.  My valuation on these prospects will be available in late May or early June depending on the weather.

I like Emerson in the 3rd, really good zone CB with excellent length/ SEC competition - good system fit here, probably not fast but that's OK with safety help over the top.

Not twitchy, frame probably maxed out, high floor low ceiling kind of guy.  He screams Derek Barnett to me.

Im.sure if we were listing most hated players team he'd be top of the list on this board

Sure but you wouldn’t have forgiven for missing that play unless he provided that explanation. Again, is he missing wide open guys for those same reasons he described? That seems highly unlikely but, for us idiots wasting our time on a message board, we have absolutely no way of knowing precisely why he missed those plays.

That doesn’t mean we can’t speculate but we should at least be humble enough to call it just that.

Well, there may be some truth in what each of you say.  Hurts seems to stop progression if he feels any hint that there might be pressure and some of the time he seems to need to see the receiver is open before pulling the trigger rather than anticipating the receiver is open.  This makes some throws late.  He also is limited at throwing where the receiver will be but that is a comfort and experience thing with many receiver/QB duos, so that may improve.   We do see a lot,of,criticism of Hurts that he threw to X when Y was open downfield. As you point out the play may have been designed for X.  Also, there are flaws in some of those reads by the internet "analysts” with their podcasts, sites and twitter feeds.  Of course the S breaks off and plays the pass, leaving his man "open”.  If the S is any good, he is reading the QB as well as the receiver.  Jalen’s mechanics, eyes and throwing motion don’t disguise well and his motion isn’t quick on intermediate and long throws.  Now that can be fixed.  When Foles came out of college, he had a real long windup.  He didn’t change to a flick, like some QBs can do, but he greatly shortened his motion without losing velocity.

Any chance the Steelers offer us 20 and 52 for 15 to move ahead of New Orleans and get the QB they want (possibly Pickett) ?  It's really only a move down of 3 spots as we have 16 and 19
