But I guess hiring a minority and being compensated for not hiring a white person isn't racist

They were ok. Wait till there is enough time to recruit the type of talent he wants to make his scheme work.

I don't have as much hatred for him as a lot of the board, given the lack of talent, but they were brutal.

They could have been worse. Bad defense would have looked bad against bad teams. They did not. So they were at least mediocre, with a lack of talent. Thats not bad.

This makes me curious. What percentage of biracial does one have to be to qualify for compensatory picks?

Like, if someone hired Elizabeth Warren to be a head coach, would they get compensated because she's .08% native american?

Still think this is the dumbest rule in the NFL and a racist rule.

But on a different view, if they really wanted to promote minority promotions, wouldnt they want to give the (2) third rounders to the team hiring the candidate? Doh

And leftwich declined and offer that doug ended up taking

maybe coaches are starting to staybaway from these franchises

Leftwich has the TB job lined up, it will be interesting to see how he does with Trask- a bit different than the Winston-Brady challenge.

Any word on Doug’s staff?

Good move - that takes half of the team off his plate.

One candidate is a previous NFL head coach coming off consecutive winning seasons. He's black.

One is a former NFL player with ZERO NFL coaching experience. He's white.

They seem intent on hiring the white dude with no experience.

Sure, I think even a socially progressive NFL owner would question if they could trust Flores. But regardless of that, if you can't see how hiring McCown over Flores looks bad in today's climate, I don't know what to tell you.

To even pit these 2 against each other publicly as your final 2 candidates is mismanagement in itself. The Texans organization is shockingly tone deaf with this stuff, my god.

Suggestion was that Flores lost the locker room in Miami.

If the Texans want to go with someone not named Flores, Jonathan Gannon is actually probably a better move for them than Josh McCown. At least Gannon has coached in the NFL as an assistant coach and now DC for us. McCown would be a riskier hire than David Culley was last year. Apparently they told Gannon he's not getting the job so it's Flores vs. McCown.

For what it's worth, Deshaun Watson is a fan of Flores. If there is any remote interest in the team trying to retain him, they should keep this in mind when picking between these two candidates, if the difference in NFL coaching experience isn't enough.

Even if you are concerned with Flores and losing the locker room, is McCown really your next best option left??

Didn’t Culley coach for like 40 years? I’m surprised they didn’t keep Culley and bring McCown up internally.

49ers have received five 3rd round picks since the inception of the minority hire rule and have DeMeco Ryans on deck for next year.

We need to get in on this, if Ganon gets a job, we need to find a young up and coming minority position coach for DC, same with replacing the FO personnel we lost this cycle.

I think the NFL is trying to avoid being overtly discriminatory. It’s not like the situation is: sorry white coach the other guy comes 2x3rd rounders. Then litigious white coach makes the whole thing a headache.

This system still keeps the HC hiring process seemingly about merit without incentives muddying the waters.

I decided to just draft the Cincinnati offense. I give you the Philadelphia BearEagles, umm EagleCats, err…Beagles.

Nah. We have Denard Wilson who will sign somewhere else as a DC and then get a HC job somewhere else and lose out on picks

Just the O. He was gone at #6.

Sanders and Cook make sense too.

This would be the logical move, but I guess the Texans are trying to defy logic here.

What sucks about this sham of a rule is that Duce Staley will more than likely be a head coach sooner than later and the Lions will get the compensation.  They lost Brandon Brown to the NYG as an Assistant GM...His next move is GM, NYG will get the picks.

4 3rd round picks.

The rule is the rule. We need to start maximizing it like other teams, hire minorities that are 1 step away for the big job - DC/OC/Assistant GM/VP of PP etc.

Very much doubt that

The Rooney rule exists because there arent really many guys like that around.

What gives you optimism about Gannon? Not trying to be argumentative -- honestly would like to find a way to feel good about him coming back. I thought his defense was the least imaginative, least player-tailored and most passive unit I've seen in the last 20 years of Eagles defenses.

Why would we want the front office to get players to fit such a boring scheme that Gannon might not even be around to coach -- although I guess one more season like last season's and maybe the HC-interest starts to wane 😀

Seriously, the Eagles faced a slate of QBs that couldn't possibly be worse (it would be fair to say it may have been the worst slate of QBs a defense has EVER faced because the COVID-list stuff is unprecedented in league history and put guys on the field who would never ordinarily get in games) and still finished around 20th (EDIT: 25th!) in defensive DVOA.

Am I crazy? Even in this era of offense-friendly rules, this is a bottom third defense, right? What's the actual case for Gannon?

My issue was he was so married to his scheme despite not having the personnel for it.

As I alluded to, there are excuses you can make for Gannon. No speed at safety forced him to rotate in Marcus Epps a ton. No answer at the rush SAM backer he seemed to value, and he gave Avery and Johnson every opportunity to step up there and they didn't (Avery flashed a little but not enough). No depth with Graham's versatility to step in after Graham's injury.

I think they prioritize safety, a 4i fit, and SAM this off-season. Maybe an off-ball backer in the 3rd? Better fits and fewer excuses should tell us what we need to know about Gannon.

Remember Trey Brown from the Microsoft Surface commercial when he was with us? He was our director of college scouting from 2016-2018, went to the AAF and rebooted XFL the following two seasons and joined the Bengals this past year as a scout. He previously was a scout for us and the Patriots before working his way up.

We just lost two key members of the FO, let's bring back Trey Brown to replace Brandon Brown's role as Director of Player Personnel. He's had GM interviews in the past, and who knows, maybe he can even be Howie's replacement if we don't start drafting better.
