Butler should be in the Hall of Very Good.  With all the talk about safeties not getting in, seems the pendulum has swung way in the opposite direction.

I think the demoralizing truth is it could be hard to do.  Just so few available that are any good at all.  Outside of the obvious (potentially) available QBs the Eagles may have one of the best options already in house with Mustache.

It always is, which is why so many teams reach and put their resources in the wrong bucket... why the Vikings went after Cousins, why teams trade a ton of resources to get to the top of the draft and talk themselves into the wrong guys.   Such is life in the NFL.

 

Teams are always in one of a very few places:

• They have their guy (Chiefs, Bills, Chargers, Bengals)
• They just drafted a guy they hope is their guy (Jets, Bears, 49ers).
• Their guy is aging and they are just trying to hang on (Rams, Bucs last year, Saints in recent years).
• They don't have their guy and desperately want to find him (pretty much everyone else).

(I might have missed a couple...) 

I think the Bucs are hoping they drafted their long term future QB in Trask  . Their HC is in a year to year mode , so no telling who their QB will be short term , if they go that route ,

The word down here is that they don't think Trask can be the guy.  Definitely don't want him to start this coming season.  Even talking about bringing Winston back.  Or trading for Wilson, Carr, Murray or signing Cousins or Bridgewater.

I see Doug is making Press Taylor OC in Jacksonville.  I feel for sorry for Trevor Lawrence; Taylor is great for bible studies and social events but a sliding scale to nothing when on the rest of the stuff. Good luck!

Word from the staff and GM is they love where he is at , all the negative stuff is from FSU fans 

you can google interviews from GM and staff from a week ago

they won’t bring in Murray , Wilson etc , too costly and the glazer brothers won’t sign off on that , they are in a reload/ rebuild mode ,

they will be losing 5, 6 , 7 starters , I would guess Godwin , Davis , 4nett and Cappa will get new deals , all the others won’t be back

they won’t be serious contenders , IMO 

Brady, rojo ,Jensen , Suh , JPP, Whitehead,Gronk ,McClendon ,gholston , Howard , gio , Stinne , minter all will not be back

This might be the dumbest idea I have ever heard.  Trade picks, the player you select with that pick is an unknown.  Mailata is a stud.

Jacquan Jarrett in 2011, and Nate Allen in 2010 -- both of whom were different grades of terrible.

Howie's MO the past decade or so has been to fill the defense from the free agency route, while filling the offense by way of the draft.  I'm guessing his rationale might be that skill guys on offense in FA tend to be more expensive while defensive FA guys might come a bit cheaper, in salary cap terms.  That's my theory on his strategy on roster building.

I would be quite happy if the Eagles spent their first 5 draft picks on defense.  I don't see it happening, though.

Leroy Butler was the prototype of what was wanted in a strong safety when he played.  Maybe it is my age.  Maybe it is the tendency of the Eagles to play their Ss as more of an interchangeable high S since JJ’s D that makes us forget the way SSs played in the 1990s and before.   Maybe it is because the last three Ss (not sure what position you call the guy who got in because of his shampoo commercials) that got in were FSs.  Butler was a SS that could cover WRs, RBs and TEs and tackle the run near the LOS.  He was the SS that teams kept trying to find and couldn’t.

It will be a total disgrace if they ignore these two positions again. And signing guys like Will Parks and Corey Nelson is basically ignoring the position.

This is the average round for each position the Eagles have drafted since 2010. Your theory looks pretty good compared to this. Defense is significantly lower on the priority list. Josh Sweat just made the Pro Bowl, but prior to him the last defensive draft pick that made a Pro Bowl was Cox who was drafted in 2012 and Brandon Graham from the 2010 class.

Hated Taylor as QB coach but the comments were that when he suggested the Philly Special, he had a binder of plays. Doug grew up as a QB then coach with a guy known for bringing a binder of plays to his first HC interview.  Taylor’s brother said that Press had a more complete view of offenses than he did.  Now with Press as the passing coordinator with Doug (and with Marty in the house), the Eagles abandoned the run and the passing game wasn’t very good.  Who knows whether he will be a good OC, but keep him away from the QB.

How Marty has been able to remain employed in the NFL is mind blowing. Every where he goes, he runs a terrible offense, yet, still gets hired. He must be really likeable.

My brother has been a life-long Chiefs fan and is really hoping they let Bieniemy walk.  He wasn't happy at all with the total lack of adjustments to what the Bengals were doing defensively in the 2nd half.  I didn't ask him who he wanted as OC but I can guess it wouldn't be a Big Red reunion with Marty   lol

A belated take on the Harden deal...

A lot of folks are making the take that the Nets got the better of the deal.  A that may be true if you look at Simmons as a borderline All-Star.  But he wasn't a borderline All-Star with the Sixers.  He was a distraction.

The Sixers got better.  Just because the Nets may have gotten "more better", doesn't make it a bad trade.

Our GM and coach said publicly that they love where Hurts is at and he is the starter next season.  I don't believe that and I don't believe the Bucs.  They will try hard to get a QB in.  Trask ain't it.  Another guy drafted in the 2nd who was definitely over drafted.
