If Jalen Hurts was a soda he’d be a Dr. Pepper. Some people like it, you don’t know if it’s a Cola or a Root Beer, it’s got fake credentials attached to it but that gives it more swag than a Pepsi or Coke.

More like Mr. Pibb.

It will do as a backup option in a pinch, but it's not quite Dr. Pepper. Some will argue it's Coke tier.

Whoa. That’s racist

But is Pepsi really a proven soda?

If you have to make the case of Hurts being a better QB because of his running ability

This right here... this is the crux of the issue.  Most people who talk about Hurts as a QB discuss him because of his running ability and completely ignore his passing, or they foolishly throw out the 'basically a rookie', 'he's a hard worker, so he can improve', or my personal false equivalency favorite... 'Josh Allen's first two years, blah, blah, blah.'

The problem with the green statement is that some non elite QBs have won the Super Bowl on teams with great defenses.  That does not mean that Hurts is capable of winning a Super Bowl.  Not at all.  It also shows how negligent Howie was in not feeding talent to the defense.  Now if @austinfan claims that is because Schwartz would only play veterans, that would be Howie’s and Doug’s fault for accepting that.

Otherwise, an excellent post.

This is true, however, most of those happened years ago.  TB held KC to 9pts, but they had Brady.  NE held LAR to 3pts, but again, Brady.  The most recent one would be DEN beating CAR and holding them to 10pts even though Peyton was their QB, but he was toast by then.

The NFL is a different animal now with the rules so favouring the passing game and receivers.  We do still see teams capable of playing very good D and neutralizing or even somewhat suffocating an opposing O, but those instances are fewer and further between what they once were.  It's still possible, just not as likely as it used to be.

And to build such a great D would require either doing what SF did with a number of high end draft picks or what LAR did by mortgaging the future.  That's why in this day and age I prefer a bend but don't break D that creates TOs.  Be stingy in the RZ and give up FGs instead of TDs and be opportunistic in getting the ball back to your O.

TB and the NYG both laid down the blueprint for how to neutralize the Eagles' O.  Stack the box with 8 defenders, take away Hurts' running lanes and keep him in the pocket as much as possible, disguise coverage as much as possible, and minimize the Eagles' ground game which forces Hurts to have to beat you with his arm and processing.

Yup.

The EMB Blog halftime show

If I had $50M, I'd happily spend it to end the Super Bowl halftime show.

Yup.  That last one is a good one.  They're just looking at numbers with no context.  Look at the player and what his skill set and potential is.  Allen had the raw tools and an amazing skill set.  He just needed coaching up and time.  Hurts lacks most of what Allen has so his path will not be the same.

The bolded is the important part, he wasn't negligent only on the defensive side, but that's where it has been most obvious.

I really like Dr. Pepper. . And the new Dr Pepper and cream soda is just awesome.

Frankly, I would rather see Amazon pay a dividend to its stockholders.

They should dismantle the yacht and leave the bridge alone.

But, they were defending a running QB.

I think there’s a difference between trying to win with a non-elite QB (which I believe you can do) and trying to win with an inferior passer (which I do not believe is realistic).

I think of it like basketball - some of what works in the regular season goes away in the playoffs. A QB like Hurts can win games in the regular season based on running or just having an above average day. But in the playoffs when defenses get to play a little more freely and you are more likely to face off against top tier QBs, I think you have to at least be a solid passer.

I believe he can get better. I believe he could win games in the regular season against low level to average teams. I do not believe he can compete deep into the playoffs and think we’d be in that NFL purgatory for the duration of his time as an Eagles starter

Teams are already adjusting, did you notice that practically every team in the playoffs had some version of safeties high?

They're focusing on taking away the big play and the other team's top offensive weapons, and make QBs beat them by dinking and dunking and throwing to their 3rd and 4th targets.

Which is why a power running team (because DCs don't see many these days) gives DCs headaches.

A good defense doesn't have to stop a team (though what did KC do in the 2nd half), they need to hold them to FGs and force a couple turnovers.

Why did the Eagles RB’s have their second highest yardage total against the Jets ??  It was just the lowly pocket passer Minshew at QB that day.

it was the Jets, silly.

Bowles didn’t have any headache in the wildcard game; the Eagles had 0 points with the game in the 4th quarter.

A power running team works best with an efficient QB who can throw off play action and make the defense pay for loading the box.  The Eagles had a bottom-tier QB in the game, so they had 0 points at the end of the 3rd quarter, and Bowles slept soundly

Ironic response.  You disregard the Jets, because they are the Jets.  But, at the same time you are hailing Hurts for what he did in his final 3 games before the playoffs.  But, in the midst of that group, was a game against the Giants (who finished with the same record as the Jets) and whom had just beaten the Eagles while making Hurts look like a high schooler.  Sub-50% completion pct.  Under 150 passing yards, 0 TDs, 3 INTs.   The other games were against the Washingteam, one with Garrett Gilbert against the Eagles in the first game (meaning no pressure on Hurts whatsoever to put up big numbers).  Second one was against a beat up Heinecke.

Did you watch the Eagles-Bucs matchup?   The power running game from the Eagles was easily shut down and they had no answers, because Hurts was incapable of throwing the ball to win the game.
