Am I the only one who doesn't see 40 times translating to success in the NFL as much as many think? I don't find it to be the key benchmark coming from the combine & pro days.

What are the question marks? I've watched a lot of Hogs games with my buddy who went there and he was awesome to watch.

Has anybody clocked his in game speed that you know of?

He also had a really poor 3 cone drill

Post Wilson trade, I will update my draft predictions on QB:

#6 Carolina -- Pickett

#9 Chickens -- Willis (previously DEN)

#11 Washington -- Corral

I'll throw out there again -- Hurts was a 3rd round prospect drafted at #53.  There may not be any slam-dunk QB prospects in this draft, but there are better QBs than Hurts.

Pickett is the only QB in this class I would draft in Round 1.  Howell won't be there at #51, and Ridder won't be there at #83.

Imagine the pure chaos

One can assume he tried a few sprints yesterday in preparation, and didn't clock faster.

I'd guess we'll see more players standing on their combine 40  times and opting out of doing it at pro days, that combine track was unusually fast.

Which will be tough for those not invited to combine to match those fast times

Plays fast

I like Burks, and speed isn't meant to be his stock-in-trade, so his 40 time doesn't bother me at all.  Ideally we would wait until Round 3 and take a similar big WR in Ezukanma or Ross, though.  I could also live with Pierce or Pickens in Round 2 for that matter.

That’s BS! The EMB had first dibs on buying the Broncos weeks ago! I even offered $20.17.

There is a lot behind a 40 time.

It is the combination of burst (start), acceleration, and top-end speed.  All are proxies for different attributes.  WRs without a track background may struggle with their start and, although they may blaze through the second 20, will end up with a pedestrian overall 40 time.  For me, top-end speed is very relevant to a WR and RB.  The start of a 40 at the combine isn't a real football action.  Accelerating and running away from defenders are.

No I think 40 times are overrated, ten yard splits and top speed and agility drills carry more weight for me

I always like to use Brian Westbrook as an example.

He had an average 40 time of 4.57 yet in the field he was one of the fastest guys on game day, his ability to start stop and start again and reach top speed in an instant was tough to keep up with

That ability to accelerate to top speed in and out of a cut isn't represented In 40 time.

If football was about running 40 yards in a straight line then it would be a track meet not football.

Well that's not true. The top 5 rushing teams last year were us, Indy, Baltimore, Cleveland and Tennessee. Baltimore, Cleveland and Indy didn't even make the playoffs, and between the Titans and Eagles, they amassed a whopping zero wins. A strong running game will get you to 9-10 wins, but in the playoffs you have to be able to pass. Hurts simply cannot pass against good teams. Look what Tampa did to us, completely neutralized our run game and dared Hurts to throw it.

Two teams playing in the super bowl 5th in passing yards and 7th. Neither were too half off the league in rushing. 4 teams in the nfc and afc title games were 4th, 5th, 7th and 12th. In the divisional round 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 12th and 24th. Only 1 of the 4 conference title game teams was top 10 rushing team it was the niners. 3 of the 8 for the divisional round ( and bills were top 10 in both rushing and passing).

Honestly, I never heard the reference, but I very rarely pay attention to what non Eagles players say in the media anyway.

I said the same thing a few pages back.  Totally agree.  It's misguided at best.  Rarely will a WR actually get a free release where they are able to sprint 40 yards down the field to catch a football.  Average / Min / Max speed playing in an actual game is probably a better measure.

Poor Doug. Cam Robinson is meh.

Somewhat topical today.  Kirk = QB Hell.

I guess you are from the "if I randomly keep saying something it makes it true" school of thought.
