Southgate had Gallagher and Trippier ready to come on and park the bus to get to penalties. England was not good all tournament and the better team won.
July 15, 20241 yr Colombia played an outstanding game and quite frankly I think Argentina got away with one. Overall a great game though, and kind of how you hope a finals goes.

England was going for the winner and had another minute or two to get it until Spain managed to collect themselves. They finally started Shaw which was a plus. I think the biggest mistake was starting Kane and leaving him in. Kane should have been the guy that comes on with 10 mins left to try to score off a set piece.
July 15, 20241 yr Yeah, our lot needed pretty much everything to go for them, due to the limitations of the manager's tactics. It didn't 🤷♂️. Spain were excellent, a joy to watch. Worthy winners 👏 Lot to unpack for England before, hopefully, 2026 world cup in your neck of the woods.
July 15, 20241 yr I think some of England's critics are a bit harsh. They made it to back to back Euro finals and barely lost both of them (including the one to Italy by literally the slimmest of margins.) In Qatar they had the misfortune of running up against a powerhouse in France in the round of 8 who likewise went on to lose the final in PKs. Still one of the best teams in the world.

I don’t think some of the critics have been harsh enough. Yes they made back to back Euro finals but throughout this tournament the player turgid football and until the semi finals didn’t play a top team (and even then the Netherlands are good but not a great team). They had so much attacking talent at their disposal but played about an hour of good football in the entire tournament.

They played pretty good the last two games but I would have liked to see how they would have done without Kane for the first 80 minutes of each game. When Kane came off the entire approach changed and they looked SO much better. Kane just can't run anymore or at least he couldn't in this tournament.

Gakpo, Depay, Dumfries, Van Dijk, etc. They took the world's best team to PKs in Qatar also.

They beat Albanian because of a 97th minute bicycle kick in the first round of knock out.

True but Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia which was the biggest upset in world cup history. Good teams have bad games. France was a much bigger disappointment if you ask me.

Was at psg and chelsea, but both teams seemed to underachieve relative to the talent they had. We'll have less talent here, so perhaps fewer egos, but he'll have to get by tactically more than he's ever had to there.

He seemed to do better as the underdog with Spurs, Southampton and Espanyol than he did with PSG and Chelsea. I think USMNT kind of suits him. He’ll have some talent but he will definitely be the underdog when going up against the big boys of Europe and South America.

People thought he did a good job with Chelsea but was just a situation that couldn't be won

Most of his career he’s overachieved compared to the talent level of his team. PSG is the only real disappointment.
