The right is starting to sound exactly like the far left, but replacing racism with pedophelia.  It's not enough to not be racist, you have to be anti-racist.

Yes, that was the reference. Very good, van.

A wash for Disney from an earnings perspective -- the added taxes will basically be offset by the costs moved to the government (fire, safety, etc.). The impact to taxpayers on that stuff would also be a wash. However...the wildcard here is the debt. If the ~$1bn of debt is assumed by the counties (and FL law is pretty clear on this), that is a liability moving to the taxpayers. The cost of the debt is very low, since DIS has a great credit rating, but the repayment obligation moves to the taxpayers.

All in all, it's much ado about nothing. And, it may get overturned by the courts anyway. It's just a political sideshow.

That's great news! All the ishlibs in here who were super seriously concerned about the residents of two central Florida counties can breathe a deep sigh of relief.

Now Florida has provided examples of the banned textbooks

My favorite is the bar graph one that shows racial prejudice by political affilition.  Hmm, I wonder which political party it favors.  I cant believe the GOP could possible have a problem with these harmless books

To put it in perspective, of the 48 analysts that cover the stock, it doesn't appear a single analyst has changed his or her earnings forecast based on this.

Attention all trumpbots: Don't fall for the fake news from vikas here. The punitive actions by DeSantis are a slam dunk to be approved by the courts and are a stone cold guaranteed lock to be absolutely devastating to Disney's bottom line due to the hundreds of millions of dollars in taxes they will now have to pay. In summary, you need to sell all shares of your Disney stock asap before it craters to be nearly worthless. Much like Nike, now Disney is also failing to heed the warning of the proverbial "get woke go broke", so act now before it's too late!

How long until the robots take everything over? It has to be better than dealing with the DeSantis of the world.

This is how Kz imagines Disney

The one thing I do find funny in here(regardless of which side your on) is the assumption that the county(s) are going to take over, take care of things for Disney etc etc.

LOL what a joke. Disney is still gonna have to have a huge crew to fix things, to repair things, to keep things clean... HUGEEEE

Disney isn't going to get special treatment from the county. Which means the roads are gonna be rubbish, trash pick up will be missed, maintenance will be done by a 22 year old county kid and Disney cant have that.

Which is part of the reason it’s a dumb idea to begin with to take away their exempt status

Its a win win for Desantis.

Disney gets no special benefits, has to pay their taxes in full it seems. Gonna be dragged down is governmental redtape and will still have to self fund everything internally( fire, police, repair, etc) because Disney needs to uphold a certain level where a county won't be able to.

And the people in the surrounding counties only have a billion dollars in debt dumped on them.    A win-win-win

Yeah, the context of those lessons is mathematical modeling of bias.

It's unfortunate that racial prejudice by political affiliation makes for a strong real world application of mathematical models measuring bias, but I for one think communicating facts to students is a pretty important part of education.

Some seek to want to suppress uncomfortable facts. Sucks for them.

I don’t think dysfunctional government is the flex you think it is.  Especially when Disney sues them after a fire or some other disaster the city or county fails to handle adequately.

In fact if I had to guess part of the benefit of the tax exempt status for the city and state is that they don’t get sued by Disney.

I think people have no idea how much a Billion dollars is.

Sure, to 1 person, a billion dollars is a ton. Divide it up between a million homes and business over the course of 3 years it's like 20 bucks a month lol.

  Why the F would anyone pay a single dollar for this though?  These people gain nothing and you're asking them to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars a year for what?  For an elitist politician to help his national profile?

Again, they gain absolutely nothing from this.  It doesn't help their life in any way whatsoever.  They're forced to pay out their hard earned money for a dog and pony show.

Disney doesnt get any special treatment. so the same way the FD has to put out a fire at the local resturant  is the same way they gotta do it if the Castle was burning down. Both, I'm sure will be done adequately.

Yeah but the difference here is that Disney is a huge corporation with an army of lawyers. So if the fire department does a bad job Disney is going to sue the city, county, or whoever.

no ones paying 100's of thousands of dollars. more like 20 bucks a head.

You keep throwing out the billion dollars like it means something. Just stop lol

1) you guys(a lot of you in this thread) think Disney signed into a special agreement that hurts them and makes them pay more... get real

2) You guys( a lot of you in this thread) are defending Disney when they're going to fold like a cheap lawn chair.

I said hundreds or thousands.  Not hundreds of thousands of dollars.  Add up 20 dollars a head (a number you pulled completely out of your a**) every month and you're paying in the hundreds every year.  Add in multiple people in a household and you're into the thousands every year.

And again, no one gains a single tangible thing from this.  Regular people don't want to be forced to pay for some weird political show that their loser governor is putting on.  You can for some reason pretend like they're happy to do it, but they're just not, I can promise you.

Disney will now no longer receive tens of millions in tax breaks per year, so, yes, it will increase tax revenue for the state. But by all means, continue pretending to know how much the residents of two Florida counties are going to pay in taxes and how much you care about that increase. It's mad entertaining.

while they distract the public with all the disney nonsense....

Dude, you're just wrong every time you say something

I know about 45% of the country that would pay extra for a political stunt if it meant keeping perverts away from their kids.

I know about 45% of the country would pay extra for a political stunt if the liberal left got F****ed in the A.

And finally. It's not hard math bud. A Billion dollars divided up between business, homes, apartments, other attractions, etc etc etc  probably ends top being less than 20 bucks a month.

  It doesn't mean that.  I can't even imagine how blindly stupid someone has to be to believe it does.  Punishing Disney has exactly zero bearing on the passage of the bill.

It's a political stunt for attention.  And, no, no one wants to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars a year for that except the absolute dregs of the right, and thankfully weird losers like Kz who are happy to dump their entire paychecks into right wing political stunts are deep in the minority.

Watching the debate in this thread is just comedy gold. Stupidity abounds.

I'm sure Disney will be fine.

The main issue people have is that this is clearly a politically motivated move seeking to punish a company for holding the wrong opinion in the eyes of the government.

This isn't even the result of a broad policy shift that "just happens" to capture Disney. This was a punitive action taken against a specific company by a state government. Something that, for example, I'm pretty sure the founding fathers sought to prevent.

I know exactly what the bill says.

It doesnt want teachers, talking sexually things to 7 year olds and holds them to lawsuits.

Any ADULT...ANY ADULT..who talks sex, sex ed, gay, lesbian trans, to a 7 year old who isn't there child. Is a f****ING pervert.

Think about that. Think about rolling into your friends house, pulling there 6 year old aside and start talking sex with them.

  What the F are you talking about?  Taking Disney's independent status has no bearing on any of the insane sheet you're prattling on about.

And this isn't specifically about Disney

, I think the founding fathers would like  all private companies being treated equally.

Ok, sure. We could argue about whether or not the specific carveout that has Disney basically being a mini govt is right or wrong.

But let's not pretend DeSantis' motives here are two push Florida towards some more perfect ideal of minimalist government.

He is using his position as governor to play culture war games that he believes will pay dividends during the 2024 primary. Period.

That is the issue reasonable thinkers have about this.

To be sure every candidate for president in 2024 will be playing games. But the games DeSantis is playing are not equal.

Disney openly picked a side on a legislative level(a big no no imo).

Disney is now, reaping what they sowed

Disney will also fold, walk back the side they picked, and get reinstated on special privileges that you guys seem to think doesnt exist.

Disney's position on the bill has exactly zero bearing on whether or not it becomes law.  For proof, look how quickly the FL legislature and senate moved to punish them.  No one in the FL gov was swayed by their opinion.  So, no, this move isn't about the bill and it's survival.  It's a political stunt for Desantis to show the Republican base that he can be as authoritarian as Trump.  And it seems to have worked because the usual suspects have circled the wagons on Desantis like they would normally reserve for Trump.
