I'm sure Disney will be fine.

The main issue people have is that this is clearly a politically motivated move seeking to punish a company for holding the wrong opinion in the eyes of the government.

This isn't even the result of a broad policy shift that "just happens" to capture Disney. This was a punitive action taken against a specific company by a state government. Something that, for example, I'm pretty sure the founding fathers sought to prevent.

Disney is now treated like every other business in the state. I know the founders would be horrified.

"No you can't just take Disney's special tax privileges away and treat them like every other business in the state what would the founders say?"

I love that this just unironically happened in this thread.

Ok, sure. We could argue about whether or not the specific carveout that has Disney basically being a mini govt is right or wrong.

But let's not pretend DeSantis' motives here are two push Florida towards some more perfect ideal of minimalist government.

He is using his position as governor to play culture war games that he believes will pay dividends during the 2024 primary. Period.

That is the issue reasonable thinkers have about this.

To be sure every candidate for president in 2024 will be playing games. But the games DeSantis is playing are not equal.

What???? Of course it is, Desantis believes in equality under the law.  That's why he....checks notes....was the one who gave them special exemptions after they contributed to his campaign.

I’m sure their main concern would be Disney’s status.

Maybe all this political BS back and forth could've been avoided if we just left the kids alone, and stopped turning everything into a political battleground

That would have been a solid idea. Most ishlibs swear this wasn't happening anyway, and yet, they couldn't stop themselves from absolutely losing their ish and forcing Disney to take a stand. Talk about an own goal.

I know exactly what the bill says.

It doesnt want teachers, talking sexually things to 7 year olds and holds them to lawsuits.

Any ADULT...ANY ADULT..who talks sex, sex ed, gay, lesbian trans, to a 7 year old who isn't there child. Is a f****ING pervert.

Think about that. Think about rolling into your friends house, pulling there 6 year old aside and start talking sex with them.

You are, without a doubt, one of the dumbest MF'ers that's ever posted on this site. And that's including people who think the earth is flat and those who get easily confused by calendars.

This whole discussion just perfectly encapsulates the elevation of style over substance in politics to a nauseating degree.

1. As I have repeatedly said, I couldn't care less about this law. Maybe it's unnecessary, but it basically enforces a policy that most people see as completely rational -- don't talk to young kids about these things in school (leave it to the parents). But the left goes bananas and makes it an issue because...they are idiots dedicated to walking into every culture war trap. They shame and bully Disney into taking a position.

2. So now the GOP in Florida is going to "punish" Disney by revoking their special district and...assuming over $1 billion in debt off their books while assuming the cost of providing services. So to own the libs, they will hurt their own taxpayers. Disney will now have to pay some taxes and get normal approvals for building new sites, but stock analysts uniformly view this as being a complete non-event. So this doesn't impact Disney but slams taxpayers. Genius.

Basically, Democrats act like idiots, and Republicans say hold my beer.

How much revenue will Florida have to raise to make up for all of the maintenance they are now going to have to do on Disney's roads?

Disney isn't Amazon. They paid $780 million in state and local taxes last year. How much more are they going to pay now and is it going to offset the increased cost on the state?

I know serious questions aren't really your thing, but if anyone wants to weigh in on this, I'm legitimately interested. From the outside it looks like Desantis knowingly increased the financial burden for his state out of spite.

It's not enough to not be a groomer. You have to be actively anti-pedophile.

It'll cost Disney tens of millions of dollars a year in taxes a year. I guess locals in two central Florida counties could be hit with higher taxes, but it's still completely unknown. I guess the main takeaway should be don't publicly support the sexual grooming of young children. A good lesson for Disney.

Their having Reedy Creek doesn't absolve them from paying any taxes to the county or state, but Reedy Creek adds a millage to the property to pay for all the services, so Disney essentially taxes itself to the tune of $150-ish million/year, plus around $55 million/year to pay off debt. So not only will Disney not have to pay more in taxes, they’ll pay about $200 million less in taxes per year.  The whole point about having Reedy Creek was speed. Sure, it costs Disney extra to have it, but compared to other theme parks the move at the speed of light.

Seminole county is trying to figure out how much extra they’re going to have to charge, but Orange County has already stated that next year property taxes will go up by 25% for everyone.

So yeah, DeSantis and the FL legislature basically just saved Disney almost a quarter of a billion dollars per year, while making taxes in one of its most populous counties go up by 25%, when property values are going through the roof here, which just compounds the problem.

Also lol at anyone who thinks DeSantis has a shot in 2024. Has anyone actually ever heard this man speak?  He’s going to get on the stage with a few national level big league Republicans and have his welcome to the show moment.

Yeah, the context of those lessons is mathematical modeling of bias.

It's unfortunate that racial prejudice by political affiliation makes for a strong real world application of mathematical models measuring bias, but I for one think communicating facts to students is a pretty important part of education.

Some seek to want to suppress uncomfortable facts. Sucks for them.

"Facts".....sure, sure, sure

Imagine if there was a math textbook that was like:

Suzy aborted her unborn baby after 10 weeks, but LaShanda aborted hers after only 3.  Research abortion and discuss with a friend who made the best decision

Im totally sure you'd be like "this is just fact based problem solving".

This ish is transparently awful and you all know it.  Take the L and move on

So what if the landlord now owes a billion dollars?

So what if the state is now on the hook for all the services Disney used to provide?

Disney (consumers) will be on the hook for the expenses. Now there's a middle man (government) with oversight in place to make certain the evil corporation isn't cutting corners and putting the public at risk.

Likely route will be an "amusement tax" like there is most anywhere else. Even Hershey went that route a few years back.

Democrats should be feeling safer already. 👌
