Well, I have voiced my concern about Howie refusing to draft Ss.  That said, in high school, Coach used to say that they call it safety for a reason.  (That was primarily defending the wishbone. Veer, wing T and a little bit of Power I.)  Last year, Harris played about 20 yards deep a fair amount of the time.  (With better coverage from the LBs, I expect that cushion to shrink a bit.). But all of the Ss on the current roster are best downhill.  Basically, keeping the play in front of them.  Mayden, Vincent (despite roster listing as a CB, should get work at FS), and Wallace all have experience in the slot.  Mayden and Vincent have good speed but Mayden misjudged angles too much at Alabama for me to have confidence in him as a FS.  That’s why I push Vincent in that role.  Both are green.  Epps was but seemed to click more as the season wore on.  Wallace seems best as the low S.  For a decent nickel in college, he just seems to miss so many plays those rare times he played.  He is at the point where he needs to show he can be an NFL S.  Chachere seems limited to me (but he was still a bit green).  Blankenship looks like a box S but good downhill in college.

I think we see some combination of Cover 2,  Cover 4, Cover 6 (I think the Eagles played some  Cover 6 last year where when watching the All 22, I would think they were playing Cover 2 and then concentrating on another area think they were playing Cover 4).  Singleton would miss in initial reaction that it was hard to tell what the LBs were doing.   The Eagles played more Cover 3 than I thought they would. (Not a lot but sometimes it sure seemed so with where McLeod was lining up.) They also played a kind of Cover 2/Cover 1 hybrid from the nickel where it would look like Slay and Maddox were playing man or real tight cushions on the receiver in their zone, Nelson zone (almost like a boundary corner) with a looser cushion and with Harris so deep he was not visible on TV so you had to look at the all 22 and McLeod and/or Epps playing downhill.

But Singleton struggled to keep the play in front of him (as opposed to catching the play) and Nelson was all too ready to pass the receiver to Harris so there would be a gap. (PFF liked Nelson more than me.)

So I hope a healthy Taylor, White and/or Dean and a Bradberry, McPhearson or Gowan allow Harris to play it a little closer this year. I also suspect.

We didn’t see a lot of jams at the LOS and no press man. I don’t expect any change on that.

What the heck is cover 6? Never heard of that. Is cover 4 quarters or something else?

I'm sorry I brough such a depressing topic into the blog.  A little back story without too much detail. I met my friend 12 years ago during an AF commissioning program. He was on top of the world

Cover 2 to the boundary while also playing cover 4.

From what I remember one time, Eagles did it at some point last year and blew the coverage resulting in a TD. Quintin Mikell argued with people that didn’t know what Cover 6 was.

I've never heard of cover 6, good to know, I would have liked to see taters arguing with a former NFL safety about coverages though, would make for good TV.

Jaylen brown almost has a pretty amazing triple down. 40 points, 9 boards and 7 turnovers.

Basically a hybrid.  Basically three deep zone and four low..  Usually basically Cover 4 zone on the strong side and Cover 2 on the weak side.

In fairness, most don’t and even if they do, there will be plays where it’s hard to name them because of the players/positions on the field.  Further we may think we see one coverage but something else was called. Plus we have the media guys that call pretty much any coverage with the safeties playing deep as Cover 2.

I wonder if Mikell was referring to the play where Nelson stayed flat and "passed” the receiver to the deep zone where the S couldn’t get there.

Very bizarre that the Eagles' representative is the UDFA QB... not the first round pick... or second... or third... or any draft pick.

I thought the same thing. He must have really impressed in the rookie camps.

Not sure it is that simple. Believe the rookie premier is an NFLPA event and includes some seminars on money management and careers post football.   IIRC there was something about  media training some years ago that got some publicity.

And how to get a fall guy...

Best friend killed himself last night. I feel so bad I'm numb. Wish I would have called him just one more time.

Yeah nfc east last year boosted the cowboys and eagles. the afc is ridiculous.  6 teams who missed the playoffs in the afc in the chargers, colts, dolphins, broncos, browns and ravens all made nice moves to their rosters this year (maybe not baltimore so much and colts could go either way depending on if Matt Ryan is done).

Who's backing up Matt Ryan these days? 😉

I am so, so sorry.

I hope if any of you guys feel so bad you want to end it all, there's someone somewhere, anyone that loves you. It's just terrible for everyone.

There are resources out there. Hell I don't know any of you personally but I would be here to chat even if it's just a pm on the EMB.

But three plus four equals seven, not six.

@Iggles_Phan has this in his signature.

Cover 6 is a good high-school coverage, but a bad NFL-level coverage. It just gets crushed by smart QBs who understands spacing.

So sorry man. It's one of the most selfish things someone can do because of the pain it causes the people left behind and the questions of "maybe I could have done something".
