I'm sorry I brough such a depressing topic into the blog.  A little back story without too much detail. I met my friend 12 years ago during an AF commissioning program. He was on top of the world

Well, tell the Eagles to get on the practice field like everyone else and the blog would not devolve into this.

I just saw the new cheer squad was announced.  You can tell these chicks are from Philly.

So from all the practice reports out yesterday, there's one more than any other that really bothers me.

The play where Quez was open in the endzone, Hurts saw him, but decided to scramble and run.

One of my biggest issues with Hurts last year was his mental mistakes. The RPO inability, the insane breakdowns in the first half of the first Giants game, etc. Just stupid, mental mistakes that don't even get into his physical limitations as a passer.

Maybe they were practicing a scramble drill (though, why the hell would you?), but the fact that he's still unwilling/unable to make a throw, even when any negative repercussion of that throw wouldn't mean anything in this instance, and instead he looks to run for some reason, is extremely troubling. In practice, he's completely protected by his red shirt, so running gains nothing of value at all. Keeping his eyes downfield, and making throws should be the heaviest emphasis this TC for Hurts. We know he can run. Take this time now to learn how to throw, and try to improve. It really, really sticks with me, and any glimmer of hope I had for him was washed away with that report.

It's simple really

His entire football career, he ran around making plays with his legs, it is so natural to him, he believes in his legs/ability so much, that he will always default to running when he is unsure, or uncomfortable for any reason. This is common problem to a run first QB. They are so used to relying on their own legs, that their instincts take over when they feel unsure/uncomfortable, and they run.

It would take you physically holding him in the pocket to force any other behavior. It is why I seriously doubt he can take that leap that so many (media types and blind loyalists) have already projected he will (wishacasting)

His career highs for a season are 33 receptions, 396 yards and 2 TD's.  The bar is pretty low, so the next level should be easily attainable.

I think the next level is Travis Fulgham.  38 receptions, 539 yards and 4 TD's.  The majority of that Fulgham got in 5 games.

I get that, but there was reports he had been working with QB gurus this offseason. I had some hope that he'd be focused on pocket improvement, so disheartening to see on day 1 that he hasn't learned a damn thing. Just bring in Strong now and let him learn.

Wasn’t he wanting to be traded a few months ago?

To take it a step further, if I was NS, I'd tell Hurts that he's benched if he scrambles on any play in TC, other than a designed run

He probably did work on pocket play improvement.

But when the real bullets start flying, his instincts take over. Most Run first QB's who have made it to the NFL starting positions, got there on their improvisation and running skills. Not on their ability to read defenses and pick them apart.  It's not that he cant learn to, it's that, as long as his legs work he will still rely on them. It is almost an involuntary muscle reflex when he decides to take off.

And by the time those types of QB's break down physically from their own style of play, it's now too late for them to learn. It's a pattern.

Exactly what Todd Bowles did in the playoffs.  I am very curious to see what Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn come up with week 1, and if Hurts can overcome it if they go with the same plan as Tampa Bay.

Yes I understand all of that. My point is now is THE time to be avoiding all of that BS. If he won't, then it's already a failure before any regular season snaps are taken. I refuse to even call him a hard worker, because this is the time to be putting in hard work. Instead, he defaults to what's easy for him. F him.

That's interesting. If he decides he wants to come back to the NFL after graduating, would the Commanders own his rights?

I would think they would to the extent he was under contract. I am guessing he just doesn't want to play football.  It sounds like he probably is planning on graduate school for something.

NS is taking a totally different approach than giving Hurts ultimatums.

He is wearing his tshirt like a butt kissing fool. Doing their secret handshake.

SIRI !!! Wake up! Coddling Hurts is gonna get you fired.

Agree.

In my mind it was failure to think he could ever break those tendecies. The first clue of that was him doing circles in clean pockets when he doesn't know what to do. When he gets uncomfortable, or unsure, his legs start moving, involuntarily.

Unfortunately we have all season to watch this, I could be wrong, but I dont think this will end well.

Ialso agree Might as well let strong develop what he can?  But likely he isn't ready to be playing early in the season anyway.

I am sure Siriani is part of the plan that if Hurts does not work out he will be part of the choice of QB's in the 2023 draft.  If the Eagles were all in on Hurts, they could have used 3 first round picks this year and really loaded up on talent, but they have hedged their bet and have the capital they need to get a 2023 QB.

The only issue with the play, is they picked the wrong trade partner, and I think the Saints will finish with a lower draft pick than the Eagles.

This is from Gary Cobb and I don't think he's typically just a mouthpiece for the team.  One practice in to TC, doesn't mean much but if he is making decisions faster that would be progress.

On an empty field without his teammates or defenses coming at him.

Instincts are hard to break. Working with dogs, we work on impulse control, it can be hardest thing to train for some of thedogs and or breeds like sight hounds, who get excited by fast movement.  Hurts needs to work on impulse control.

What the Eagles have done, they have set a nice team together to support a young QB, taking advatage of a young QB's lower cap numbers.

This will be true for a few years to come, so drafting and developing a young QB is still a good possibility next year, where the new QB would have a pretty good roster to come in and help them be successful, make it an easier transistion.
