For a touch of perspective, I checked the 2021 defensive depth chart, and seven of those eleven starters were either free agents-to-be or are no longer with the team. The starters who fall into neither category were Graham, Hargrave, Slay, and Maddox. They extended Sweat soon thereafter.

My point is, it's all temporary. They were in the same position a year ago and I think a good argument can be made that the players we have under contract for more than one year at the moment are better and younger than what we had then.

We also have a boatload of draft picks.

In sum, I think we're better off than you think we are.

We have six next year, albeit the missing ones are a five and a six and replaced by a second first. Not a boatload.  I may have a bit of a jaundiced eye at Howie, which I will admit.  I am prepared to be surprised by this defense but will admit I am starting at a lower point than you.   I think Bradberry is an upgrade over Nelson.  Is CGJ an upgrade over Harris?  Time will tell.  I think White is better in coverage than Singleton, not hard, but by the same token, I suspect he may be worse against the run.  The Chargers were really bad on run defense last year.  Reddick has to be an improvement over Avery, heck I thought Patrick Johnson, who saw his snaps decrease, would be better than Avery.  I think adding Davis to the DT rotation helps Cox, Hargrave and Williams. Getting Graham back helps, especially as an upbeat leader.  So I am optimistic compared to last year but this isn’t the second coming of Gang Green and the depth is weak

Now the good thing is next year should be a good DE and CB draft so that might help.  We’ll see. I hope you are right.

Autism isn't a mental disability.  Mental disability refers to an intellectual dysfunction.  Autism is a neurodivergency that may or may not be accompanied by intellectual disability. The way I see it is that people are a-holes to RTK.  Also, if you disagree with RTK and engage with him, he will say something that's an a-hole thing to say at some point.  That's when I stop engaging with him. I don't take it personally because it doesn't matter what someone calls me on the internet. So the next time he makes the same point or when he's on some rant, I just don't engage.  I respond when he does make an insightful post which he can do.

Fair enough sir. Thanks for the education.

Yes, he played a lot of nickel corner, but most sites talk about him as a safety, and everything I have read at this point indicates he is playing safety here.

We have a slot corner, and a good one in Maddox, who sucked when he played safety, and we cut projected starter Anthony Harris.

Right now our depth chart lists CGJ, Epps, Wallace and Blankenship as safeties ( yes, that will change at noon today with claims ) but to think he wasn't brought here to be a safety when we already have 6 corners on the roster is being a little obtuse.

I think Josiah Scott will play a little S as well.

There are 2 very physical runners out there on waivers. Hopefully we snagged one if we cant steal Drake away.

ZaQuandre White, and D'Vonte Price would be solid grabs.

Between White, Price, and Abram Smith there are 3 rookies out there I'd give a chance to over Brooks.

Is that more of an indictment on Epps or the depth behind?

I think Epps is going to have a decent year.

The only time I worry about the "salary cap" is when it prevents us from signing a key player.    I cant recall that being a problem recently.

WIll it be eventually? I dont know, because it hasn't happened yet. Every year they raise the damned thing and Howie figures it out.

I think it was a slight problem last year, The biggest FA signing was Anthony Harris at $5M. The longest signing was Adrian Killins and Le'Raven Clark at 2 years. Howie had to bargain bin shop by filling the roster with Andrew Adams, Eric Wilson, Ryan Kerrigan etc. and we didn't have the money to upgrade on the Alex Singleton, Harris/McLeod, Avery's on the team. To be fair, there were two pretty big outliers with Wentz wanting out and COVID that contributed a lot to the problem.

Overall though, Howie generally manages the cap well. I can see why fans would disagree with some of the approach or get caught up in the moment, but Howie probably has this thing planned years out. As long as they don't have to cut or trade key players in their prime like the Cowboys, I think it's fine.

BTW, Reid changed the offense to maximize Garcia's skill set when he came in, rather than McNabb's.  Very different QB styles with those two.  No more deep shots to start the game, no more deep crosses and flags.  Much more over the middle short, throw it in stride and let the receiver run with the ball.

That was more about McNabb's limitations, he always struggled on the touch passes.

But the WCO was built for Montana, who had a weaker arm than Hurts. But was smart and mobile.

Reid adjusted it to McNabb because of his limitations as a passer (worms still shudder at the mention of his name).

Alex was a dedicated, smart player, no doubt, but he always seemed late to the tackle. struggled in coverage and was a bit light in the seat.

I'm hoping White's aggregate talents supersede Singleton's deficiencies.

Wait.. on Thursday Night Football they’re playing with a children’s ball? A different ball than the rest of the season? Is this a joke? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life. How is that even a thing? I’m appalled. Kenny Pickett is gonna love Thursday nights. But what about teams that don’t get Thursday games? Or get multiple Thursday games? The NFL is becoming a joke. I’m glad I got to see the Eagles win a Super Bowl before it totally collapsed.

Didnt see any updates on this. People must be trying to stay secretive for the blog fantasy draft.

Brian Robinson was back at the team facility 2 days after being shot. And brought oreos for the RB room.

Good for him but multiple shots to lower extremities for a RB is probably a lengthy and possibly incomplete recovery. A bullet hole isn’t the same as a muscle tear.  Hoping he was grazed versus a penetrating wound but given surgery unlikely. Hopefully smaller caliber.

Didn't we get outbid for Marcus Williams this offseason?

Depends what you want to believe. Reports were the offers were the same but he just chose the Ravens.

It is shocking how bad our backups are. I am glad they have turned to new blood in Blankenship and Jobe because the guys they brought in last year were all poop. Why doesn't Stoutland have a brother who coaches dbs?

People were worried about Burrow's hand size as well.

Saw in a video the other day, they said its not an issue these days because of the way guys have started to grip the ball. He showed how he grips closer to the back end of the ball, where it is smaller.

Thats not a new thing. Kurt Warner was the first QB that showed off his grip which was considered unorthodox at the time over 20 years ago. I guess it has caught on.

Intended to respond, wanted to cover that part first.

I do not agree that kicking the can down the road is the best approach.  You have cap space you can not use to sign a young player, and continue to have to put band aids on the situation.

Looking at next year, with rollover ( which will be less by the time it happens ) Eagles have 11.5 million in cap space with 42 players under contract.  At least 6 million of that will be allocated to the two 1st round picks if they use them, then you have to pay the rest of the draft class.

I put a depth chart together for players under contract, Eagles will need a starting RG ( I have Josh Sills in as the starter ) and there is only one back up offensive lineman under contract.  Need backups for 4 positions on the line, and need to find Lane Johnsons replacement at some point.

Gainwell is the only RB under contract, need a starting CB across from Slay, and the only safeties under contract are K'Von Wallace and Reed Blankenship.

I would be less concerned about the cap if the drafting was better, but because of so many draft failures, the cap becomes more of an issue as you keep having to go for one year fixes, rinse and repeat.

I don't think the cap is an issue for signing players or keeping players.  They are able to sign players to competitive deals.  Bad draft picks hurt the roster as do bad deals (like Alshon).  I don't think those things are avoidable.  It's a question of how well you can build the roster otherwise.  Howie seems to have done a good job this season.  I think the team can continue to band-aid positions and be competitive.  It's what the Rams have done with certain positions. The real issue for this team is QB.

I think the hand size thing was an over reaction by the Hurts crowd when they were worried Howie was going to replace their man crush with Kenny Pickett.

Plenty of QB's with big hands have plenty of ball security issues, see Carson Wentz and his 10" hands.

For those who are interested, The Athletic has that $1/month for 6 months offer again. Would cover you through the entire football season. They charge you $1 a month and you can cancel ahead of renewal while keeping your sub.

I just watched a video of Russell Wilson throw the ball like 3 times faster than a normal ball. It’s much narrower. It’s not so much about hand size as much as velocity. But what bothers me is the lack of continuity. It’s like basketball players playing 5 games a year with a volleyball. It’s downright stupid.

Honest question, do one of you exit the circle, I'm assuming the one who lost and has to eat the saltine, and then post what the others say, or do you all take like a 5 minute break from the circle hopefully wash your hands and then post???

As you post that I see your dead cap numbers going from 63, to 58, to 50. Thats a clear decrease.

So he is shrinking that pile, WHILE the cap will continue to increase. (barring another unforseen pandemic). Which means the % of the cap represented by dead money is exponentially decreasing. We are in good shape.

You are explaining why his plan is a sound one.

The only push back on this is dead money is designed to decrease over time. We haven't even been able to have dead cap in 2023 until June (plus the two post June 1st designations), so that number in 2023 will obviously go up as time goes on and as we enter the 2023 offseason. Also, 63 to 58 looks like a decrease, but I think it's fair to point out the majority of the 63 was Wentz. Wentz has no 2022 dead cap so it's not great that the gap is that small and only a $5M decrease.

Who did they want, they could not sign, ours or otherwise?  I am of the firm belief, if they wanted a player, they will find a way to get them on the roster, even if it means kicking more of the cans down the road.

I have that belief because of the history we have.

OUtbid because we didn't have the money, or outbid, because we didn't see more value? Hard to quantify.

Outbid is outbid.
